Is it true that he considered Shadows of the Empire to make a movie out of it?

They were going to make Shadows of the Empire into an anmaited movie but the did not.

Lucas did mention that if they thought about shadows of the empire along time ago he would of made it into a movie. Shadows of the Empire would be episode 7 and Return of the Jedi would be episode 8 . Plus they were going to make splinters of the minds eye into a movie too, and that would make it episode 5.

It would been cool if george Lucas made a bunch of the EU books into movies like the way they did Star Trek.

I don't think they ever intended to make SOTE or SOTME into movies.

Splinter was my second favorite Star Wars tale, first being ANH. I loved reading that book!

Splinter was developed as a potential low budget sequel to SW if the movie was successful enough to garner a sequel. When it went blockbuster, that idea was shelved for the trilogy (and 9 episode idea).

Um . . . they never turned any Star Trek books into movies.

From an interview with Gary Kurtz:

  • EPISODE 1: Was to focus on the origins of the Jedi Knights and how they are initiated and trained.

  • EPISODE 2: Introduction and development of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

  • EPISODE 3: Introduction and life of Darth Vader.

  • EPISODE 4: There were seven different drafts of the film. At one point, they pursued buying the rights to The Hidden Fortress because of the strong similarities. At one point, Luke was a female, Han was Luke's brother, Luke's father was the one in prison (interesting point for some debates), and the film featured 40 Wookiees.

  • EPISODE 5: Once written, the screenplay of Empire is almost exactly what is seen on screen. The only cut scenes were those involving Wampas in the Rebel base (cut because of time and unsolved technical glitches) and about two minutes of Luke/Yoda Jedi training with no real dialog.

  • EPISODE 6: Leia was to be elected "Queen of her people," leaving her isolated. Han was to die. Luke confronted Vader and went on with his life alone. Leia was not to be Luke's sister.

  • EPISODE 7: The third trilogy was to focus on Luke's life as a Jedi, with very few details planned out.

  • EPISODE 8: Luke's sister (not Leia) appears from another part of the galaxy.

  • EPISODE 9: First appearance of the Emperor.

Kurtz remembers some thing correctly and others not so much. At least, according to zombie's book The Secret History of Star Wars. The appendix on the sequel trilog[ies] is pretty cool.

To be honest I don't think the original ideas for Episode VI (as Kurtz describes them) were all that great. Just because you kill a character off doesn't make the story "cool" or even daring.

The main problem I think most people have with Return of the Jedi is that the Ewoks were 3 feet too short for their liking. I can get over that, the rest of the film is fairly solid and the scenes at the end with Luke-Vader-The Emperor are among the best in the saga period.

If you read the previous posts you would have noticed the part about early 80's interviews where Lucas states what happens at the end of E9. The proof is in those interviews. Interviews which YOU can find on microfilm at your local library, just like I did years ago.

TLJ Edit: You're right, but I'd like to keep it out of the thread.

I think it would of been nice if Lucas did the Thrawn trilogy and Dark Empire trilogy into movies too.
