Any chance of seeing the old trilogy on Blu ray anytime soon? Ever since I got the PS3 I've been dieing to know if they were coming.

At the same time I worry that any Blu Ray release will be the super updated version with Hayden at the end of ROTJ. Which will cause me extreme pain in the gulliver and want to cause some ultra violence. So I hope at least Lucas will release the original format movies on Blu Ray.

I would like to know what OT SW on Blu Ray would entail. Would it just have extra features or would there actually be a noticable difference between SW on DVD upscaled on a Blu-ray player? I mean how much can LFL go in and "clean" the print for added image sharpness?

They should be able to rescan the 35mm film, if it's still available, which they've done with (I'm assuming) most Blu-ray remasters. Here's an example from Wrath of Kahn. Looks like a new film.

The Voyage Home, on the other hand, was not given a full remaster (rescanning the 35mm film), and therefore is more of an upscale with some cleaning up.

Here's a comparison with a 480p DVD shot and the Blu-ray rescanned 35mm footage in 1080p.

Gah, I feel like a Trekkie now...

It depends on how much Lucasfilm wants to spend and whether or not the film is still available.

Just something I thought I'd point out: GL originally wanted to not release on DVD at all in favor of waiting for Blu-Ray to mature technologically-this was back in 1999/2000 or so. So I'd say it's just a matter of time before they do appear on Blu-Ray, although I'd think that they're probably working on a "big" release with alot of extras and maybe some new viewing options to take advantage of a BR disc's greater data capacity.

There's one problem you got there: Blau-Ray didn't come out until 2006, Lucas wanted to wait to see if DVD would become the popular format before releasing his films on DVD, which is why Phantom Menace

wasn't released until 2001.

Okay, I wasn't sure whether it was technical maturation or waiting to see if DVD would become the dominant format.

Still, I did pretty good with even remembering Lucas' issues with DVD. tongue

Very early on Lucas and or McCallum already knew and spoke about a better "blue laser" version of dvd on the horizon. Part of their early reluctance about dvd was that the quality wasn't as good as it could be (with a blue laser). Which makes the mediocrity of the current Star Wars trilogy discs (even by regular non-blue dvd standards) more of a comedown for the formerly cutting edge company.

I just hope that they don't wait until after the 3D versions come around in theaters. That would be TOO long to wait. The technology for Blu Ray is as good as it it going to get for now, so why not take advantage of it?

It seems like bad business to keep sitting on their hands while these new formats emerge. Especially since the gap between the new "standard" formats appears to be closing faster (VHS held the banner for approx. 20 years--DVD's for less than a decade--how long until BluRay is mothballed?). My point is that people would obviously buy Star Wars BluRay discs now, so why not invest in the new scans and sell them to us? Please don't wait until the format du jour is almost dead again and replaced with something better.

I'm sorry, but any blu ray version will contain the added visuals (and probably more) of the DVD release. So you might be disappointed.

I'm hoping they include both another special edition and the original release.

If I remember correctly, LFL archived all of the restored prints in full resolution a few years back along with TPM. The rest of the PT was shot in native digital, so that's not an issue.

I'm sure he's just waiting long enough that we'll be willing to pay some ridiculous price for the BD box set.

From a marketing standpoint, the substandard release of the originals was to likely see if there was a reason to put a hefty amount of money in a possible blue ray release. The editions are passable on dvd, but releasing them on blue ray at all would warrant a massive project. Though, to be fair, my gut feeling is that there are editions of every version of every film that would pass for a format far beyond blue ray.
