Why did both Admiral Ackbar (ROTJ) and Jan Dodonna (ANH) say to the rebel pilots "May the force be with you"? I always thought that the Jedi and Rebels were two seperate things.

Just because they're not Jedi doesn't mean they can't believe in the Force. Both Ackbar and Dodonna were old enough to fondly remember the Old Republic Jedi.

Pretty much. Non-Jedi also believe in the Force because they have seen what Force users can do.

In fact, Dodonna worked directly with Obi-Wan and Anakin during a few Clone Wars battles. So he knows firsthand of the effects of the Force.

The Rebel use of "May the Force be with you." was a reminder of the days of the Republic, and associating with the first victims of Palpatine's Empire, the Jedi.

It's not really a n00b question. To a lot of people, a non-Jedi saying "May the Force be With You" would be like a Christian saying "There is no God but God. Mohammad is his prophet." happy

Just to go further with what others are saying, a major point is the heartless, mechanical and atheistic Empire contrasted with the warm, compassionate and spiritual Rebel Alliance.

(It may seem that the Empire are dark siders, but really, everyone bar Vader and Palpatine seem pretty much like atheists, and I doubt the true nature of those two was widely known.)

I think it's similar to the way non-religious folks who have a vague spiritual belief will say 'God bless' or 'heaven help us'. It's like a general request for whatever is out there to work in our favour.

It actually goes a lot further than that, according to the Core Book of the SW Saga Roleplaying game. Because of Palpatine's propaganda against the Jedi, the predominant feeling in the Empire about the Force was they were better than it. Palpatine was not known to be a Force-user, he kept that carefully underwraps, and Vader was more his henchman than the top guy (as with all the Dark Jedi like Jerec etc).

So really, the Rebellion used the invocations of the Force not just because they wanted to look back to the old Republic (remember, the full name of the Rebel Alliance was the Alliance to Restore the Republic) but saying the Force existed and was good and of help was another form of Rebellion.

FTR, yes, I am a GM. nerd

Same reason communist propaganda in Eastern Europe included Westerns from the Indians' perspective. Granted, South Dakota or New Mexico looks remarkably like East Germany, and the Indians have Clairol-black hair and brownface, but it was the thought that counted.

It is an interesting question. I've all ways been fascinated by the idea that there weren't many different factions of force users. It seemed to only be Jedi and Sith with some sects spread across the EU.

The Rebels think very highly of Kenobi as evident in his being sent R2.

No, that was all Leia's doing. Bail told Leia that if her double life between the Rebellion and the Imperial Senate grew desperate, she was to contact Obi-Wan on Tatooine. She was planning to bring him to Alderaan when she got sent those plans and then was intercepted by Vader.

Things didn't go to plan, or maybe they did...
