That if you're a mass-murdering maniac who has destroyed the galaxy, all you need to do is save your son from an electric shock (even after cutting his hand off and killing his best friend) and the universe will forgive you.

Well, I believe that's David Brin's opinion, anyway.

My take is a bit more charitable. It's about a son having to come to terms with the fact that his father is a real person rather than some ideal superhuman, reconciling the imaginary, heroic father-figure in his head with the flesh-and-blood person he actually is.

It's a process all boys go through, pretty much.

Even if your dad cuts off your hand, he's still your dad.

Seriously, the entirety of ROTJ is about father–son bonding and how family is more important than anything else.

If you're child turns out good, you find redemption for past sins.

Hmm...I think it's less about fathers and sons and more about there being a little peice of good in everyone; even those who seem like larger than life evil creatures like Luke had seen Darth Vader. Also, in somewhat the same vein, about internal struggles of what is really important in life. Luke would rather die then turn to the Dark Side and Vader eventually decides that his son is more important then his allegiance to the Emperor.

In strictly keeping with the father-son tie, I think it speaks to how the sins of the father can be passed down to the son. If Vader had just run away to Naboo with Padme at the end of ROTS, then Luke may have never been the person that he was. Instead, Vader goes completely to the dark side and as a result, that sin is pushed to his son who is burdened with the task of righting what has been wronged by his father. The good that Luke sees in Vader is Vader's recongition that he forced his son into a life that he never really wanted for him. This guilt or sense of responsibility and the desire to remove the burden from his son is what makes Vader kill Palpatine. So that Luke does not have to deal with that thought haunting him for the rest of his life, as the death of all that he betrayed and killed had haunted Vader.

What does Star Wars 'teach' about the 'death of the father' or father-figure?

Utterly open-ended question. No prompt or rationale.

Ok, that was too close - I'll rephrase the question.

Setting aside the biological link of Luke to Anakin (or of Owen to Cliegg - but that's PT), and focusing on the large number of links between (a) son figure and (a) father figure...

What does Star Wars 'teach' about the death of the father figure?

That every father has something good inside of himself.

Don't mess with someone's kids! Palpy apparently didn't learn that lesson in ROTJ, so Han taught him a second time in EE.
