The unfinished look was added to be more dramatic. It becomes a symbol of a spider web that way. You see this in the Emperor's throne room, his window has a spider web structure and he sits int he middle of it. Draw them in, draw look in, and comsume him.

What design flaw? Not covering up one exhaust port that would have impossible for anyone who wasn't related to the Chosen One to fire a proton torpedo down and blow it up.

Perhaps that was the TRUE purpose of the Death Star: The most elaborate, complex, and expensive Jedi detector in the galaxy. If it blows up, you know you've found another one of those Force-wielding cockroaches. tongue

In all seriousness, though, how do we know it would be impossible for Wedge, Biggs, Porkins, John D, Pops, or even Jar-Jar to make that shot (okay, Jar-Jar doesn't count as he's got to be the more unaware Force sensitive being around to succeed as much as he did despite himself)? All we saw were two attempts, with a 50% success rate. Now had there been several failed attempts, that might be a bit more of a scientific conclusion. Sure, Luke is the one with the skills to pull it off consistently, but if it had been so impossible, I don't think Bast wouldn't have so worriedly walked up to Tarkin and say, "Uh, I think I see what the Rebels are aiming for and, y'know.... we miiiiiiiiight have a problem....". Granted, if he thought the chances were great, he would've been more stern in requesting Tarkin leave... or would've at least ran off himself, but it was high enough to consider evacuating his boss.

"That's impossible! Even for a computer."

If they don't believe they can make that shot, they can't.

How about those massive metal doors that close at about 200 mph?

[quote=]I reiterate that a kid from a farm in the middle of nowhere with no prior experience in an X-wing (or any starfighter) blew it up. [quote]

1 The controls of Luke's T-16 training flyer mirrored those of an X-wing
2 Luke was flying quickly though Beggar's Canyon, targeting two-meter wide targets without a targeting computer
3 Luke had the Force.

Like Obi-wan says, there's no such thing as luck. wink

All these years Ben has been waiting for Luke to come of age so that he can become a Jedi and redeem his father. That's what Ben has been doing, but you don't get this in the first film. - George Lucas: Annotated Screenplays

I also have to think the automated assist controls of ships in a GFFA are far better than ours. Today's airliners are a step or two away from take off/fly/land all by themselves. Russia built a space shuttle that launched, flew to orbit, and landed...unmanned. Given the tech of a GFFA I am sure anyone with basic spaceflight education could have landed a hand at the battle of Yavin.
