Now I've been a star wars fan for a long time since about 1990 and what I can't understand about is why so many fans complaned when the Star Wars Trilogy DVDs came out in 2004 and later in 2006 saying and claming they where rushed jobs. I strongly disagree 1st off lowery digital images cleaned up the film the best they could and also the whole sound mix issue towards the end of A New Hope I did'nt like that change but it's there and I can put up with it. I like the 2004 dvds the trasfers are great and the sound ( except for that one scene in A NEW HOPE) is good on the dvds. Why some fans complan about the 2004 dvds I just don't understand. But that's just me.

For the 2004 DVDs, they were rushed. The team that was tasked with digitally converting them was not given enough time, about one month per film I believe. That's not enough time to transfer a film to its highest quality. Sure the picture looks nicer, but the digital conversion caused problems with some of the special effects, either by worsening them or making mistakes (such as the blue lid on the droid pod) appear for the first time. There are also sound issues as you mentioned, but I know a lot of people have found issues in more scenes than just the one with Princess Leia and Tarkin.

As for the 2006 DVDs, I would hesitate in even calling them jobs, let alone rush jobs. There was no digital conversion, which is what fans who wanted the unaltered trilogy on DVD had been asking for. The original versions were also labeled as "Special Features" which, just on principle, is also not what most people who wanted the unaltered versions wanted to see. I for one would like to see a proper digital conversion and a proper special release of the original, unaltered films due to their historic value.

In my opinion, if Lucasfilm decides to release either altered and/or unaltered versions of the films again, they need to sit down and take their time with them, not try to get them out as quickly as possible in the hopes of appeasing people. That's my take on it.

I would also hesitate to call the expression of an opinion a 'complaint.' Let's make sure we discuss the films and not the fans. happy

Well Said jedimasterbac. Hopefully when the blu-ray release of the original triogy comes out in either 2011 or 2012 Lucasfilm will take their time to get the picture and sound right and release the original un-alltered version in the best picture quallity possable. Look at the blu-rays for exsample of blade runner and close encounters of the 3rd kind they included the original version in good picture quallity.

Indeed, although I'll just mention that there's nothing to suggest there will be a Blu Ray release in 2011 or 2012. wink

I heard a month total for the whole trilogy, but I don't have a credible source for that.

I don't think we'll ever see the original unaltered trilogy release again.

To release the original trilogy with the extra scenes/effects, would be an admittance of sorts by Lucasfilm that the SEs were mistakes. (which they were!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

None is asking for extra scenes and effects on the unaltered trilogy. They're asking for a digital conversion of the films as they saw them in theaters. No new special effects, no new scenes, no changes other than digital remastering. Just the unaltered films in the best viewing format they can be. If they released that in conjunction with yet another special edition with more changes, which they probably will if there is ever a Blu Ray release, then that would not be an admittance of a mistake, which is entirely subjective anyway.

I guess I'm confused then. I completely agree with what you're saying.

Take the films shown in 77, 80, and 83. Convert them to the best copy that can be made and sell in on blu ray. DONE.

Unfortunately, this will never happen.

The problem is all the prints from back then have deteriorated quite a bit, and they basically destroyed the negatives while making the special edition versions.

The money it would cost to re-construct high resolution prints of the originals is way more than Lucas would want to spend on something he has no interest in.

I think people should be happy with the DVD re-release of the laserdisc versions.

I know there are a bunch of people on petitions to make this happen, what if they all took up a collection amongst themselves and came up with the millions of dollars it would take, give it to Lucas on the condition he would make this happen?

Gomer, everything you've ever said on this topic is factually incorrect. Either you're deliberately spreading false info, or you still don't understand but talk as if you do. Either way, it's
very uncool.

I think what he's referring to is the thing about the negatives. As far as I know, although I could be wrong, the negatives were not destroyed, and even if they were you don't need the negatives anymore for transfers. Again I could be wrong, but I recall someone saying about about how the negatives from Citizen Kane were gone but they transferred it anyway.

yeah,
Unless there was a reason to destroy the originals, I can't see Lucas allowing it.

The negatives are fine, (the pieces of film were just rearranged in 1997, with certain old shots swapped out and put on a shelf and new ones taking their place, it's nothing remotely like "destroying" anything), the transfer cost is in the high tens of thousands not millions, and they wouldn't use old prints for it anyway so it doesn't matter what shape they are in.

As far as the sound issues on Episode IV A New Hope DVD it does'nt bother me all that much as it does with some fans. Star Wars is 32 years old and some of the sound issues are due to the films sound elements of the 1970's and Lucasfilm and skywalker sound did a good job restoring the sound mix as best they could. Now the lowering of John Williams music during the battle of yavin I have a problem and the inconsistices of the dialogue don't bother me as much. I hope these sound issues are fixed with the blu-rays come out. The audio is not perfect on the Episode IV A New Hope DVD but it is good enough for me.
