when i was 10 I forced myself to memorize the entire scrolls as well as 95+% of each script. My friends would quiz me all the time.

Or they would just say a "A new hope, GO!" and then I would start reciting the entire movie... yes I was always a huge nerd.

This shot changed between the original release and the SE. In the original, a cloud car flies directly at the screen, and the gas platform is missing. In the SE, the cloud car is gone and the storage platform takes its place. The platform design comes from concept art from ESB - it was also used in, but not invented for, Rogue Squadron.

The matte paintings still look better than the CGI in the SEs and PT...

If you say so. There's a couple that look like garbage.

Once again, if you say so. wink

There's plenty of garbage f/x work in the OT; I'll see your bad CG and raise you matte lines, transparent snowspeeder cockpits, and nice big boxes around TIE fighters. And that's just for starters before I start talking about horrible rubber masks, R2's quarter-inch-wide wheels somehow working in the forest and underwater, and the Emperor's slugs. tongue

In the theater -- ie, the original form and presentation of the films -- the matte lines and eyebrow slugs were hardly visible, and the shifting black boxes were not perceptible in the slightest. Only with the processes of turning the film into video did these errata appear.

Okay-so what? It's not 1977 anymore, SW has not been originally released in a theatre for nearly three decades-in fact, none of the OT films have beyond specialty events. Everyone watches it on video or DVD now, so comparing how something looked thirty bloody years ago on a movie screen to audiences that were still f/x virgins then is frankly ridiculous.

I have no problem at all with the majority of the matte paintings or the majority of the CGI shots... but the original shifting black boxes around ships were terrible.

In the original edition of ESB, the shot in question didn't have the mining platform, but a cloud car zooming by the shot.

Why is it ridiculous? The films were created before a secondary home video market existed and therefore they were made to look as good as possible on the silver screen. Criticizing their limitations on video is like saying the Sistine Chapel is ugly because a print you saw of it in a book looked bad (kind of an extreme, I know, but an accurate comparison I think).

It's kind of like watching Jar Jar in TPM in HD. It's like watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit!

I noticed that as well. You would have thought Lucas would have done a better job.
