has anybody actualy come across the use of telepotation in star wars.or how about "a ship that small couldnt have a cloaking device".before star wars i supose there was only star trek.planet of the apes and 2001.so were teleport and cloaking only put in star was because thats what sci-fi at the time had in it.
scientist reckon that within 100 years we could have teleportation and i believe that scientists can already teleport a beam of light.
so surely teleportation technology is not beyond the starwars universe

My mom started getting panic attacks on planes and has since wished we could beam around (child of the 60's, watched the original Star Trek series wink ). Can we beam? No.
I like the idea that the SW people might have ideas for technology they don't have, just like we do.

The EU's got cloaking devices, though. But very limited (rampant personal cloaking in KotOR aside).

Thank God STAR WARS does not incorporate teleportation technologies.
Who wants to waste time trying to figure out why the characters didn't use
it to solve another challenge... "they could have used the transporter to do
this," or "why didn't they use the transporter to do that?" It's a writer's
nightmare fiddling around with such junk.

As I understand it (which is saying little), quantum mechanics dictates that
predetermining the position of an electron is impossible, so a transporter
couldn't reconstitute an object from a "sub-atomic" level. Besides, if you
broke down the basic chemistry of the mind, how could you reproduce thought?

Uhh, I forgot what I was writing about...

I forget which SW PC game featured the cloaking TIE Phantom. But I wonder which ships Needa was referring to: maybe he encountered some CIS frigates with them during the end of the Clone Wars.

Here's a sampling of what you appear to have missed:

Flash Gordon. Buck Rogers. The Thing. The Day the Earth Stood Still. Invaders from Mars. War of the Worlds. This Island Earth. Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Forbidden Planet. Earth vs. the Flying Saucers. 1984. Kronos. 20 Million Miles from Earth. Invasion of the Saucer Men. The Blob. From the Earth to the Moon.

And that's just a sampling of well-known titles up to 1958! There are literally dozens if not hundreds more sci-fi films from the pre-2001 era.

Time to fill up your Netflix cue, junior, and educate yourself!

I don't think Luke (or, in an out of universe sense, the actor and screenwriter for that matter) said "teleport" in the sense that Captain Kirk, Spock, and Ensign Ricky get beamed down to the planet where Ensign Ricky gets shot and dies before the opening credits ( tongue ). I think he was more referring to somehow get him off of Tatooine, and his choice of word just happened to be "teleport."

I agree, I think Luke was using "teleport" pretty much as a substitute for "transport". I don't think Lucas intended it to be viewed as anything like the concept of teleportation used in Star Trek.

By the way... teleporting a beam of light? OK, I guess. Teleporting a biological organism? No way, I just don't buy that this will ever be possible.

"Not unless you can alter time, speed up the harvest, or teleport me off this rock."

The scene is an establishing mini-soliloquy about Luke being stuck in his life. Luke is speaking in hyperbole, referring to things that are known to be physically impossible by anyone with status or estate, let alone droids. He is not referring to something that is physically possible, such as physical transportation - he could run away from Tatooine, in principle at least, because he says elsewhere 'he isn't such a bad pilot himself'. In his position of endless drudgery for his putative uncle, what better felt need or wistfully frustrated solution than to be whisked away by the ST type of teleportation, if it existed. He knows it does not exist, in our universe nor in his, and hence his irritated sarcasm.

"Transport" occurs in the ANH script six times, in declarative, indicative, literal sense. This is evidence sufficient to hypothesize that Lucas could discriminate between the flavors of meaning in "transport" and "teleport". Greek "tele" means "far". Latin "trans" means across. Latin "portare" means carry. ST had appropriated the legitimate and explicit term "Transporter" to excuse, disguise, Trojan Horse the implicit meaning of "teleport". (As well as reduce the number of necessary syllables.) Whether intentional or not, Lucas drew a 'line in the sand' separating the two genres. In literary criticism speak, Lucas 'retrieved' the meaning of "transport" from its abusers and 'redeployed' it on a space-opera / space-fantasy stage that was not going to be marred by undue optimism for the sociologic future or budget-conserving dreams of a halcyon waltz to M-class exoplanets.

"Teleport" was used to mean transport, not actually teleport off the planet like in Star Trek.

I figure Luke's just being sarcastic and making a comment on the futile dreams he had of getting of Tatooine. Yes, he was referring to instantaneous transportation a la Star Trek, but it's unlikely that any such power exists in the Star Wars universe.

I always thought Luke was being a scarcastic teenager when he used the word "teleport" in that instance. tongue No, I don't believe it's a literal meaning, either.

I'd have to concur with Hernalt and TaradosGon. Luke DID mean teleport in the same magically scifi-licious way Star Trek uses it.

Of course, there is no technology in the Star Wars universe to teleport. Nor is there any to alter time. Nor drastically speeding up crop growth. The other parts to that line are the key here. Luke's being melodramatic and basically just saying that Threepio really can't help him unless he can do the impossible.
