This may be an old school question, but I just thought of it.

If Vader's main concern was retrieving the Deathstar plans, why not shoot Leia's ship out of the sky?

The obvious: political cnsequences? confirm the plans were on the ship? strange feeling about Leia?

What else would keep from destroying the Tantive IV?

Well Vader and Tarkin answer that question in the movie.

One reason is that they wanted to make sure that the plans were onboard the ship, before they blew it up. Another reason was that they wanted to capture and interrogate a highranking Rebel member in order to get information on hidden rebel bases.

I don't think politics were a problem, what with Vader's whole "There'll be no one to stop us this time! Mwhahahaaaa!" speech.

This. They needed information on the secret bases.

I figured it was cos they needed people to interrogate, and if I remember correctly, they also suspected that the Rebels had transmitted the plans elsewhere. They basically had to track down who had the originals, and who knows about them...

The book Death Star gives some interesting insight to this as well...

They would also want to make sure that the Tantive IV didn't retransmit those plans...

Random Stormtrooper: "The Death Star plans are not in the main computer."
Darth Vader: "Where are those transmissions you intercepted? What have you done with those plans?"
Rebel: "We intercepted no transmissions. This is a consular ship. We're on a diplomatic mission."
Darth Vader: "If this is a consular ship, where is the ambassador? Commander, tear this ship apart until you've found those plans and bring me the passengers! I want them alive!"

Find the plans, take prisoners. Pretty self explanatory.

That, and if Vader just pulled up and blew the ship to
kingdom come, that would be the end of the franchise. happy

They definitely needed to check the ship records to see if it had managed to transmit the plans to anyone, and if so, to whom. Also, the chance to capture a leader of the Rebellion for interrogation is too good to pass up.

Yeah, basically this. Vader's job was not only to track down the rebel plans, but also to uncover the rebel base. Leia was a big time rebel leader and Vader knew this, so killing her would've been counterproductive.

Never quite understood the whole "finding the plans" thing. If the plans were intercepted, wouldn't the first order of business have been to forward them on? We've seen hyperwave technology. Wouldn't a copy of the plans have been hyperwaved to the rebels? Or wouldn't multiple copies of the plans have been made?

Capturing or blowing up the Tantive IV would have done little to "return" the plans to the Empire.

If I remember right they were attacked just after they received the plans. I don't remember where I read it but I read it somewhere. They had no time to retransmit.
