Here's one I bet NOBODY else shared....

In the classic photo of Han & Chewie facing the camera, both firing their weapons, behind them is the side of the Falcon - the round section above the entry ramp.. As an 8 year old in 1977, I thought I could make out a face in the circle - and that this was DARTH VADER - A HUGE ROBOT!

LOL!

Also a lot of my friends were convinced his name was pronounced Darth Var-dar.

And that the title to the sequel was STAR WARS 2: DARTH VADER RETURNS

I also expected Jabba to look like he did in the Marvel comic - the alien now called 'Mosep' - I assume that jabba's associate Heater (from the radio drama) is Mosep.

Well my main misconception was that I thought it was Darth Vapor. Also I thought Leias' hair was made of actual cinamon buns.

LOL

Plus the classic ones:

Lightsavers
Lifesavers

I was one when it first came out so I never got to see it in theaters. ANH the Original version that is so I first saw it when cable was in it's infancy and I was around 6 or 7 and I used to think they cussed in the movie because I thought Lock S Foils into position was Luck a$$ falls. I didn't know what it meant but that is what I thought it sounded like so I rationalized that maybe it meant they would be lucky to blow up the Death Star.

Who else thought that the "Journal of the Whills" was a real book, and asked at the bookstore about it? For many years we'd get people asking to order it. When I tried to explain it wasn't an actual book, they'd say "yes it is! It's right here at the beginning of Star Wars!"

For me, the preface to the original novel made me think that the Emperor was just some figurehead flunky, controlled by others. How wrong I was.

I remember only one misconception and that was about Luke and Leia. The boy I had a crush on when I was like, 6, we used to play Star Wars in the backyard each summer. (He lived in another state and came to visit over the summer) Well, I of course would be Leia and he'd be Luke. By the time ESB came out and we knew the real story - we were horrified and suddenly he had to play Han Solo.

*Giggles* Hrm...I remember being upset at Leia for 'giving up' the rebel base, and then she didn't of course.

I remember my heart breaking when Han was frozen and being thrilled to death when Leia unfroze him. Eeek, sorry, those are memories not misconceptions.

*Goes back to reading all the great stories from everyone else*

I still think it's strange that Darth Vadar sounds like James Earl Jones and looks nothing like him!

So did I! Ha! You reminded me of one. Does anyone remember when they had Jabba on Good Morning America and we got to see the puppeteers and they gave away special movie shots?

That's all I could think about in school that day!

I've probably already posted this, but it came to mind again recently. When Vader chokes Ozzel, Ozzel grabs his throat (presumably as a reflex to get air). Later, when Needa collapses, he also has his hand on his throat. So, of course, I concluded that rather than actually choking people, Vader was making them choke themselves to death, which as a kid was far scarier.

For me, the preface to the original novel made me think that the Emperor was just some figurehead flunky, controlled by others. How wrong I was.

I think that was the original idea. The Emperor was supposed to be a good person who had been isolated from the people by his bureaucrats who were using his name to control the galaxy (or something). At the very least he wasn't originally intended to be a force user as such.

As for my misconceptions, I also thought that Stormtroopers were droids. My parents kept saying to me "Their not robots you know", but I thought they were talking about real life, and I kept telling them I was well aware that its just a movie and that they're just costumes. I didnt realise they were trying to tell me that the Stormtroopers were basically soldiers in armour.

I was never sure if it was Darth Vader, or Death Vader, or some other variation.

I also thought it was set in the distant future. For some reason I always missed the opening whenever it was on TV, and figured it was along the lines of Star Trek.

When Obi-wan fought Vader in ANH, I thought he was using the same "light saver" that he showed Luke in his hut. When he died, and his saber was left in his robes, I wondered how Luke was using it in ESB. I didnt realise that Obi-wan had a saber of his own!
EDIT: Strangely though, I thought all of the other characters had one as I remember Han using a "saver" in ESB.

I also thought that Vader and the stormtroopers were the rebels, and were trying to take over the galaxy from Leia's Empire. Back in the 1980's, pretty much all of the kids cartoons had the good guys in control, with the bad guys being a bunch of renegades, so when it dawned on me that Star Wars was the other way round, I was a bit shocked.

I saw ANH (original release) when I was very very young, at the drive-in theatre. The only thing I remembered about it was Leia in hologram form. I referred to her for awhile as "the ghost lady" and I thought she was trapped in another dimension. When she bends over, I thought she was trying to escape by unlocking a little door.

About a year later, I got the story on tape for Christmas and listened to it endlessly. (it certainly cleared up a few things grin )

For ESB, the whole "I am your father"... I didn't buy for a minute! Because Ben Kenobi had told Luke all about his father, and Good ol' Ben would never lie, of course. So, "don't fall for Vader's trap, Luke!!!"

Gee -- how naive can you get??! blush

The ESB thing, in the GL commentary(I had those VHSs that were, advertized in the movie, "your last chance to own Star Wars"), Lucas said that he wanted the whole "luke i an your father" thing not to be a solid fact just yet, and that he wanted fans to debate it.

And I thought lightsabers were lifesavers too.

I didn't see ESB for the longest time, so I never knew that Darth Vader was Luke's father until I saw some commercial for potato chips on TV where they reenacted the scene. I was in total shock and disbelief...even though Luke calls Vader "father" in RoTJ. I also thought 3PO and R2 were the stars of RoTJ (it may have been that I only watched the first half of the movie and got bored...I was little, what can I say?). I was scared to death of Jabba, I had nightmares of him eating me alive.
I thought it was Darf Fader, and then one of my friends corrected me and told me it was Dark Vader.
I thought Leia and Luke were boyfriend and girlfriend.
I went to Great America and saw Ferengi and Klingons and what I thought were Stormtroopers wandering around the park, so I thought that maybe the Star Trek world and Star Wars world were somehow related.
I figured the storm troopers wore plastic helmets so Darth Vader wouldn't feel bad about being the only one.
I'm sure there are many more I can't think of....
