This isn't exactly a misconception about the films, but it's kind of a funny story. When I was 7, there was this girl at our elementary school that we all didn't like for reasons which now escape me. Anyway, her name was Jessie. And somehow or other, we formed a club called the Jessie Van Vader Club(!!!) At that time, I didn't even know what Vader or SW was, except one of my friends told me that it was someone "really bad" in a movie with a black outfit.

Years later, after I had grown to deeply love and cherish SW, I laugh at this memory. SW knew me before I knew SW. laugh

I was only about 7 or 8, but I used to think that Toyota cars had something to do with the movies because I read it as "Toy-Yodas"...

1. I thought Jawas were robots because they had glowing eyes that looked like tiny light bulbs that I would have put in my older sisters Lite Brite....

2. That 3PO caught R2 smoking a cigarette at the beginning of ANH as they were escaping from the Empire. This was actually a public service announcement that ran on a local tv station that I ultimetly confused with the movie. It was supposed to have taken place in the same part of the ship that Leia gives R2 the message for Obi-Wan. 3PO catches R2 holding a lit cigarette with his pinchers. It went something like this... 3PO- "R2 is that a cigarette you are holding?"... R2- "Be bop do bop bee"... 3PO- "R2D2 I am very disappointed in you. Smoking is bad for your lungs, blah, blah, blah..." at which point R2 gives a low and somewhat ashamed sounding whistle and puts out the cigarette- and 3PO is very happy and turns to the camera to tell the kids not to smoke. I am convinced that this public service announcement kept me from ever smoking... But poor R2- just trying to have a good time and 3PO shows up to nag, nag, nag...can't a droid just enjoy a good smoke?! lol

3. That the Ewoks were cool.

R2 would probably not have lungs- but the message got through to little kids like me not to smoke- and anyways you can't deny that R2 had heart.... lol- couldn't resist.

I thought the Empire only had one Star Destroyer. Also, in the old Star Wars picture book I think I still have, on the two page spread of the Death Star blowing up, there are two pieces of debris visible, and I thought those were the Star Destroyer and Leia's ship, which was still inside the Destroyer.

Hi!Great topic!

Well, my first conscious memory of actually seing Star Wars is when I was 11. My father actually had to convince me first that it wasn't another grown-ups, boring movie.
I remember mistaking Luke for Han Solo, bacause I've heard somewhere that Leia was in love with him, and she was looking very worried when Jabba's guards were about to throw him in the sarlacc's pit.

I also had to watch the whole trilogy a few times before understanding that Vader was a bad guy. I don't think he ever scared me at all. I always thought he was quite funny. happy

Oh, and my brothers and I used to call star destroyers "nachos", because of the shape they have!

Hehe I always thought it was called a Life Saver too. I guess I'm not the only one. I never really understood what the Jedi was until I saw Episode I, before that I was too young to understand the concept and the Force too. Basically I saw IV on tv when I was pretty young and I never understood anything they were talking about. Only that they wanted to save the Princess that was in the big "Eye Ball Space Ship".

Let's see I also didn't think that Darth Vader was a human but a robot. I also thought it was "Dark Vader" which now that I look back at it, why do they call them Darth and not Dark?

I'd always get Luke and Han get mixed up though they were totally different. And it took forever for me to remember their names even though they were simple names.

I always thought all of the land scenes took place on Earth (I didnt pay too much attention to detail or dialogue when i was a kid). It was a while before i actually took in "A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away..."

I also thought while watching ROTJ at the re releases, that the "Jedi" were the emperors guards that were all dressed in red.

Not really a Star Wars misconception but it's related. on the Dukes of Hazzard i always automatically thought Luke Duke was the blonde one. because Luke Skywalker was blonde. but Luke Duke had dark hair. sad

My little brother just said that he thought Darth Vader was chasing the Falcon in ESB because he was jealous of it and wanted to have it. laugh

The first SW movie I saw was TPM, and AOTC and ROTS weren't done at that time, so i thougt ANH was episode 2, ESB episode 3 and ROTJ episode 4 grin I recorded the 3 "old" ones from television, and didn't write the right names on the VHS's, like Episode 3 - Empire strikes back grin

when I first saw star wars, I would have been four or five. It was about 1987, and I thought the clone wars were the "Cologne Wars", and that they may have been fought in Germany. I ashamedly only found out I was wrong some years later when the SE was released and we were begining to hear more about the synopses of the prequels.

I also thought Uncle Owen was Obi Wan's disapproving brother- c'mon, they both wore the same brown cloaky thingo.

I thought the line 'lock s foild in attack position' was 'lock a$$ folds in attack position' and just thought Wedge was being rude, especially given his name.

Like most people who saw this when they were young, I think I had trouble figuring out the cave scene in ESB and Luke facing Vader. I knew it wasn't Vader but hadn't come to understand the whole meaning behind Luke seeing himself.

And this one is not about me but my mum, who to this day, still calls R2 "Rooty Tooty". She could never quite get her head around the names.
