RE: The misconceptions you had about Star Wars, when you were a kid.
I thought that C3PO had to be a real robot...I didn't think anyone was skinny and toleramt enough to be in that costume.
I thought the stormtroopers were supposed to be robots.
I thought the cockpit on the falcon was where the guns were.
Dark Vader.
Lifesaver.
I thought R2D2 died and they got a new one.
I thought Chewbacca was supposed to be a gorilla.
I thought you could also shoot people with lightsabers.
I was seven, gimme a break.

I always thought that Luke cut Vader's head off at the end of ROTJ. I saw ROTJ before I saw ESB, so I'm not sure if the scene on Dagobah had anything to do with this. I do know that this misconception was at least in part due to a picture in the ROTJ storybook from the end of Luke and Vader's duel where Vader is slouched down on the ground and you can't really see his head.
I also used to think that when Yoda said "Then and only then a Jedi will you be" to Luke in ROTJ, it meant that at the very moment he defeated Vader he would be a Jedi, but would then immediately cease to be one once the fight was over.
The only others I can think of are more misconceptions about how films were made. I used to think the pilots in the space battles really died. I knew they were actors, but I figured they were just really devoted to their craft. Also, when a friend's dad told me Chewie growled using a voice box, I thought that Peter Mayhew actually had a voice box surgically implanted into his throat. And finally, after I saw ROTJ, my dad told me that the special effects were done using computers, and all I could picture was a bunch of Gamorean guards standing at computer terminals controlling the monsters in Jabba's palace.

When I was 8, my mom and I rented all three movies to watch. When I put ANH in, and saw Episode IV, I think I actually took it out, asked her about it, and tried one of the other tapes. I then reluctantly trusted that ANH was the first movie, but I had a nagging doubt in the back of my mind. :-)

That's another one of mine that I forgot, for years I didn't understand why the "first" one was Episode IV.

My earliest memories were of seeing ROTJ and thinking that Luke's first enterance was actually the Emperor, because he had on that cloak.

-When I was a kid, I remember seeing R2-D2 and C-3P0 in a commercial telling about how you shouldn't smoke. I didn't realize at the time that they were in Star Wars, so years (and years) later when I first saw Star Wars, I was like "OMG, It's those robots from the smoking comercial!!!"
-Before I saw all of Star Wars (The first time I saw ANH was half way through the thing) I thought that Han Solo was one of the rebel guards on Princess Leia's ship.
-I though that ANH was the only Star Wars movie (come to find out later that there were two more, not to mention TPM which came out a few years back).
-When I finally saw all three Star Wars movies, all of the Star Wars references on the cartoon "Muppett Babies" suddenly made sense!

When I first saw EMPIRE as a kid, when General Veers talks to that little hologram of Vader I thought he said:"Yes Lord Vader, the shield will be down in moments, you may start your NAPPING."

I also remember making up a story to explain why yoda was so short. If you used the force alot, you would grow old and wrinkly and green - that's why there was no doubt that yoda was stronger than the emperor - yoda had used the force so much that he shrunk.

RE: The misconceptions you had about Star Wars, when you were a kid.
im only 14 years old, and the only Sw film i saw before being over 12 years old was ROTJ. therefor, thats the only SW movie i have misconceptions from. ill try to line up some of them.
- I used to think the emperor was a zombie(with that look, who could blame me). i was really surprised when my cousin told me he was human.
- All the ewoks were children, and chewbacca was the only grown-up of their species.
- Jabba was working for the empire.
- The SW movies were new movies from the 90s, i refused to believe that harrison ford or mark hamill had gotten old.
- many more, but i cant think of any right now.

RE: The misconceptions you had about Star Wars, when you were a kid.
This is great! Here are mine:
1. I remember seeing ANH when on TV back in '83 (I was five years old). I was so confused at the beginning when the Princess was stunned by a Stormtrooper. I thought she was supposed to be a main character, yet she had gotten shot in the first 5 minutes. My dad told me to be quiet and just keep watching.
2. For a long time, I was confused about the whole Obi-Wan/Luke lightsaber thing. I didn't realize Obi-Wan had a lightsaber of his own...I thought he was using Luke's father's lightsaber, and that it got left on the Death Star. I was left trying to figure out where Luke's lightsaber in Empire came from.
3. I thought the Jawa's had a crush on Luke! There is that scene when Luke is walking over to the Jawa Sandcrawler to look at the line-up of droids. They show Luke walking, and the next scene is shows Jawas getting excited, screaming, and running away. It looks just like teenage girls watching a boy band. I still wonder about that one...

RE: The misconceptions you had about Star Wars, when you were a kid.
Greetings.
I'm a new poster, but have read the discourse here for about 6 months. I just had to chime in now. I saw the Holiday Special when it aired, but was only 4 yrs old. Until I got to college and heard others talking about it, I thought that the Holiday Special was just something I had dreamed of....Seeing Chewie's house, and all. I didn't realize how attrocious it was, either.

Welcome powerjm. jsp2000, that is hilarious about the Jawas!
I used to think that when Obi-Wan slices that guy's arm off that he used Luke's lightsaber but that he used his own to fight Darth Vader on the Death Star. Stupid child-logic!
