I was very, very little when I first heard Vader say to the Emperor: "He [Luke] could be a powerful ally." (That wasn't an exact quote.) I thought Vader said "L-I". So I turned to my brother and said, "Cool! So the good guys are Jedis, and the bad guys are L-I's!" He just shook his head. It was years before I found out why. grin

The biggest misconception I had about SW as a kid was that it sucked. wink

See, as a kid I never saw any of the OT movies completely, or in order. One day I'd wander in while my brothers were watching the end of ANH. The next time I'd see the middle of ESB, then the middle of RotJ, you get the idea. I always tried to ask questions and ask what was going on, but my brothers got mad and would tell me to shut up. So, of course, I grew to hate Star Wars, because I could never figure out what the kriff was going on! I knew the basics, and who the good guys and bad guys were, but chronologically and story-wise, I was completely lost.

-I felt that Yoda was slightly annoying, he was supposed to be this great Jedi Master, but he acted like a retarded muppet at first for no reason, then kept withholding important information from Luke about his family that could've helped him. wink
-The cave scene always confused me. I couldn't figure out why it was Luke's face in the helmet and it freaked me out. Finally someone in my family explained it to me.
-I always thought that when Vader and the troopers board Tantive IV at the beginning of ANH, that Leia was, for some reason, already on the Death Star. Or something. It took me forever to realize that she wasn't, and that that was her ship. But it still totally looks like the interior of the Death Star.

I finally saw the OT, in order, when I was a teenager, and things made so much more sense after that. There were scenes I finally saw that I could never recollect ever, ever, ever seeing before. And even when I watch the OT now, I still forget those scenes are in there, because I somehow always missed those when I wandered in to watch as a kid.

Skimming this thread has made me realize how many misconceptions I'm still holding onto and don't even realize it, because the scenes I saw over and over were so ingrained into my head as a kid. LOL.

I didn't realize that the titles actually had meaning. For example, I didn't think "The Empire Strikes Back" was a description of the film. It was just a group of words that signified that film.

Hello

My misconceptions varied as a kid - sometimes I would understand things (like ESB's Luke-Vader Dagobah scene) then next time I saw the films I'd be utterly confused.

My only lingering misconception was why Vader didn't shoot Luke's Xwing in the trench - it wasn't until a few years ago I realised Han had been shooting at them. All this time, I thought the TIE pilot next to Darth had swerved and crashed into him - even though it didn't explain Darth's "What?!)" or the red flashes. I thought Han had just been watching from a distance.

A friend of mine thought Yoda's species was Jedi, the only true force-sensitive people, and they trained other people to use the force because they were dying out. He also thought the lightsaber blade colour depended on the user's force ability (even though that meant Obi Wan was as weak as Luke!).

I always knew Star Wars was fictional, but I thought the planets, robots and ships were real - like the way I knew "Cagney and Lacey" was fiction but that New York, cars and criminals were real! I was heartbroken to find out that we didn't have ships to travel to other planets, and my only consolation was that at least the droids were real... Life was a steep learning curve when I was 4. worried

I thought for a long time that in ROTJ when Luke wants to kill the emperor with his saber he just wantted to fight Vader because he had his saber up really quick.

My biggest misconceptions were probably the fact that I didn't think Obi Wan had died. I thought that all those 'ghosts' of Ben were the real deal. When I saw Return of the Jedi later on (I watched one a day for a week at my grandmother's house when I was six) I realized that they were ghosts. I cried too blush .

I'm 26 now.

When I was about 7 years old, my original ESB was taped off of TV. The tape ran out right after Luke leaves Degobah.... I did have a complete version of ROTJ. And just figured that ESB ended with Luke taking off.

It was about a year later I was at a Christmas party where the kids were watching ESB and I saw the real second half of the movie. I was so excited and it made so much sense.

That's my Star Wars misconception as a kid.

As a long time lurker, I'm finally posting. The responses I have read so far are awesome.

Obi-Wan was Obi-One. I saw ESB before ANH, because my parents though it would be too violent for me to watch when it first came out. I think I was 6. Anyway, I thought it was really strange that the final fight between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader seemed so tame after seeing Luke and Vader fight in ESB, but I rationalized it by thinking Vader was giving Obi-Wan a break because he was so old. Despite that, I thought then, and still think, Obi-Wan is the coolest Jedi. cool

I thought Han was "the other" Yoda spoke of on Dagobah because women just didn't get to be Jedi. Now I know better.

I also thought it was really uncool of Leia to play both Luke and Han. devil Then when I found out she was Luke's sister in ESB I was relieved and sad at the same time. Relieved because they found out in time, but sad because Luke seemed so lonely.

Finally, my younger brother for years thought that Luke Skywalker lived in a weather station building at an airport near my parents home in rural upstate NY. It was one of the white ones that looks like a half-buried bottle/bowling pin and might look like the entrance to the Lars' home on Tatooine. Anyway, he totally believed that Luke was in my class at school (I did not play any mind tricks on him, cross my heart...) and just about every day he would ask if he could meet Luke. I always told him no, that he was too busy working with his uncle on the farm. We still joke about it, but does teasing my little brother like that make me evil?

These are so funny! Mine's not very amusing, but I'll contribute anyway...

The first time I saw Episode 1, I was a bit unclear on who exactly Obi-Wan was and thought that his name was actually 'Padawan', given that the tall guy with the ponytail kept calling him that. I was about thirteen, I think... not exactly a kid as such, but a dumb enough misconception to qualify. tongue

I thought that the Jawas were Jedi knights as well, because they dressed the same as Ben Kenobi.

Also, it took me YEARS to figure out that the guy Luke fights in the Mos Eisley Cantina said "I've got the DEATH SENTENCE on twelve systems." For some reason, I thought he said "I've got a dess-er-tease . . ." and had NO idea what that meant.

My only actual one was that I DS2 was number 1 damaged
I also didnt get the new scene in TESB with Vader landing at the end on the Executor. This is because when I was younger I used to watch SW all the time and I never saw that scene is the SE, even though I saw them jump into hyperspace and Luke getting a new hand. I must of watched it about 15 times when I finally saw this scene. How did I manage that I ask?

Well, I had always thought Obi-Wan was Obi-One, and that Chewie was Tooie! I also never got the line "We don't have time for anything else" until I was about 13. Then all of a sudden I was like "Oh! That is so hilarious"

Chalk up one more for "Dark Vader" (Darkest of the the dark lords of the Sith).
I didn't actually sit and watch the movies until I was in fourth grade. Before then...
-I thought Leia asked Luke to come save her in her hologram (much like in the Japanese NES game by Namco), then later thought it was "Help me Han Solo. You're my only hope."
-I thought the ewoks special was a legitimate sequel.
-I thought the battle of Hoth was in ROTJ.
-When Luke chopped off Vader's hand and looked at his own hand, I thought the reason it had a black glove on was because he was heading for the dark side (nevermind the fact he was already wearing that glove rolling_eyes ).
-For I short time, I pronounced "Jedi" as "Jeti". Years later, I rented "Shadows of the Empire" for Nintendo 64, and one of the profiles already on it was "007 Jeti" :/ (No, it wasn't mine)
-I thought all three movies were based on books, and the first three books weren't good enough to be made into movies.
