I don't think this counts as a misconception but....

...I saw ESB for the first time at a friends birthday Party when I was about 10 or 11, I'd seen ANH loads of times though. I watched as a Taun Taun ran in and stopped then panned to a close up of the rider who took of his scarf. I remeber turning to my mate and asking whos that? He looked at me as if I was stupid silly and said its Luke. But it looks nothing like Luke I retorted.

He had to explain that Mark Hamil had had a moter accident which pretty muched changed his apperance.

I, too had a few....

1. I thought there would actually be a woman one day that would dress in a gold bikini and be my slave....boy was I wrong.

2. When Burger King came out with the Star Wars glasses, I thought that if you had two of one of them, and it said "trade mark" on it that meant that you could trade it for the Luke Skywalker glass because he was played by "Mark" Hamil.

Great thread!

ok first off, i didn't start watching Star Wars until the middle of grade 8 (what the **** was i doing before?) but of course i had some wrong idea of what it was about.

1. I actually thought Luke and Leia were lovers or destined to be (the fact that they are in fact siblings is still freaky to me)

2. I thought Anakin and Darth Vader were two different people (actually i thought Anakin and Luke were the same person)

3. I thought Star Wars was really nerdy (but its not its really cool and i love it!.... actually, im really nerdy so yeah)

4. I thought the Force was a real person LOL

when i was a little kid i didn't realize hoth was a different planet. i thought hoth was yavin during winter. and i also didn't realize that the death star 2 was a new death star. i thought it was the same death star from episode 4 with battle damage.

I had, courtesy of my mother, my own misconception of why Vader needed the suit. My mum had never read anything EU or movie novelizations - but she was the one who showed me star wars as a kiddie....When I was about 5 or 6 I asked her why Vader was in the suit. She offered me the following explanation (which, I don't know if she really assumed to be true or just cooked up to give me an answer):

Vader had been tortured by the Emperor like Palpatine tortures Luke in RotJ (aka with the lightning) to get him to join the darkside. Vader held out for awhile, but eventually gave in. By the time he agree to join Palpatine, he was so hurt he needed the suit.

I took this as solid fact until the prequel buzz began, and I heard the "real" story as penned in the novelization of RotJ. However, to this day I prefer my mother's idea: it really gave meaning to Vader rescuing Luke (ie he remembered what the Emperor had done to him and didn't want it to happen to his son).

No.1 I thought they were lifesabers (I guess no1 got that right)
No.2 I thought Alderaan was Earth (Leia was from there and she was a human so...)
No.3 I thought Chewbacca was just an adult Ewok.
No.4 I was confused about ESB cause when I 1st saw it the only strike I had ever heard of was in baseball so I thought it was a game.)
No.5 In the cantina scene w/ Greedo, I missed Han getting his blaster ready so I thought the bolt ricocheted off the wall and killed him.
No.6 I thought the scanner (looked like a big box) in ANH was a bomb.
No.7 Last one I can think of. I thought TIE interceptors were just regular fighters w/ bendable wings.

I used to think in ANH when Vader was torturing Leia that the droid was a mock-up of the Death Star.

I used to think in ESB that Bossk was a Rebel Pilot (c'mon, he was wearing a flight suit) that the Empire had captured and mutated (I was a Ninja Turtles fan, it made sense).

I used to think that only Jedi could use a lightsaber so when Han cut open the tauntaun and shoved Luke inside that it meant he was a Jedi and didn't know it (I also never realized that he put Luke inside the tauntaun).

Lastly, the first time I saw ANH I thought General Dodonna said "propane torpedos"... well, needless to say, my folks weren't thrilled at the thought of me being near the grill for a loooooooooooooooooong time since I so love to tinker with things.

I thought star wars as scary and nasty..."Dark" Vader, the different creatures on each planet and the sounds of the "lightsaver" were scary. Jabba, the "horned camels" (taun tauns), the "snowman" and yoda was nasty looking.
LOL!!
I also could not explain why yoda sounded alot like fozzie the bear. confused

My parents told me that Anakin fell into lava after dueling Obi-Wan. This was pretty much true, but I had believed that Yoda witnessed this, and that it was on Yoda's home planet.

(I don't know if that really belongs here, more PT)

S-Foils...what the hell are S-Foils. I always thought that. Then I'd be like why do they always move their wings around when they lock their S-Foils.

Also, not understanding "The Force" too well yet, I always though that when R2 launches the Lightsaber to luke from Jabbas sail barge..that there was no way on that could happen...the chances that it land exactly in Lukes hand after all that...impossible. I later realized that r2 only had to launch the saber that Luke could use the force and pull the saber to him. It made the scene much cooler.

Man, When I was a kid I guess I couldn't hear right or something.

1. Dark Vader - Most common one
2. Lifesaver
3. In ESB when Luke was training with Yoda. Yoda would instruct Luke to saty away from the Dark side of the Force. I alway thought he was saying Forest, I mean, look where they were training. The the scene would move to the Vader and Palpatine talking,"If we can turn him to the Dark side of the Forest...." Then Luke walking down the Dark Forest only to fight Vader. It made so much sence.

4. This one is funny. At the very begining of ANH when Vader and Leia were talking, this is what I heard:

V: You are part of the rebel lions and a tiger. Take her away.
He really says, "You are part of the rebel alliance and a traitor."

I was really into the wizard of Oz back then too.

Misconcsptions.......... where to begin where to begen ah yes i saw star wars when i was so young i dont remember when i saw them i thought that Vader wore that suit cause he liked it, i thuoght that light sbers were 'Lightsavers'and i thought they were big flash lights, i thought it was 'Dark Vader',i thought that Obi-Wan had Lukes lightsaber when he died, i thought the rebellion were the good guys and Vader was evil shock wink grin !!

i thought cloud city was a floating frisbie, i thuoght Obi-Wan went down a trap door when he disapered when he died, i thought the Emporor was like 100 yers old, i thought Ewoks were Chewbacca's cousins then i thought they were big living breathing teddy bears, i thought Vader lied when he told Luke he was his father and that was when i was little and since i was little i thought i didnt like star wars that it was stupid shock blush whistling

Aaaand THEN when i saw the adds for Episode 3 a week before it came out i thought maybe they arn't so bad movies and then watched them agin and on the commercials they were talking about how sombody turned evil and i dind't know that those movies happened first and so thought that Luke turned evil!!!!!!
