ditto Intrepid...
as I understand it you have
Star Wars
Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars Return of the Jedi
Star Wars The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Attack of the Clones (The Clone Wars would have been a better title imho)
Star Wars Yet to be named
Guess What? Star Wars is in every title....go figure people call it Star Wars....

Actually, I think the official names now are:
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Notice no "Star Wars" in ESB and ROTJ. However, they've already designed new logos for the OT, so eventually they will have the same naming scheme as the PT, and the official name will be Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

It's all context. For example I always refer to the 1977 movie as "Star Wars" and I may clarify if someone asks by saying "episode IV" or "A New Hope" but only if needed. But the term can be used to describe the most recent movie in the right context. Like yesterday my Mom asked how my day was and I said "I went to see Star Wars" and it's just implied that we're all talking Attack of the Clones. On the other hand if someone asks me what my favourite movie is I say "Star Wars" and it's understood that I'm talking about "1977/episode IV/A New Hope". If someone asked something like "In what movie does R2 first appear" and someone says "Star Wars" then they're obviously not talking anything but the first one.
Oh yeah... so no it doesn't bother me what anyone calls it so long as they don't call "Episode I" the first movie.

I'm willing to bet that most people that get annoyed with people calling ANH "Star Wars" are the same 'purist' that hate the fact that Lucas wants to add anything new to his movies. The reason I find this ironic is that the title "A New Hope" was added AFTER the movie was originally released! :-)
BTW, I'm not mocking anyone for wanting to call it by a certain name....just making an observation.

I'm willing to bet that you're mistaken. It's my experience that it is the newer fans who tend to feel that the OT needs all sorts of new material added to it, and they also tend to be the ones that refer to the episode numbers and such. Long time fans call it "Star Wars" because that's what it was called when we saw it during it's initial release.

i guess since knowing it since it was released in 77 i have known it all my life as star wars and old habits die hard. it was never really an issue til TPM came around. yes, i suppose to get everything right and not get yer pants in a twist it is ANH but to older fans it will always be star wars.

I still very clearly recall me at age 7...I had seen Return of the Jedi and then The Empire Strikes Back, and was now ready to go off and rent 'Star Wars' (yes, I did it all backwards, I know)...
So when I came back from Blockbuster, I remember opening up the little container thingy, and when I saw "Star Wars: A New Hope" written on the video I honestly thought it was a different movie. I was like "oh no...they put the wrong movie in the box!!!" and was also vaguely thinking "there's another one?!"
Not until the opening crawl said "Episode IV" were my doubts put to rest.
Ah, I was such a silly kid.

I can't say it any better than that.

As long as my future DVD collection doesn't say this, I will be happy:
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
The Sith Rise Forth (or whatever Episode III title you want)
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi

Another happy posting.

It all depends on who Im talking to.
If it's someone who knows a thing or two about Star Wars I'll call it A New Hope to avoid confusion. If it's just brought up (which it hardly ever is) I'll call it Star Wars. If I'm listing the titles, it's back to A New Hope.
I thikn Lucas tossed in the A New Hope when he realized he could do more and he didn't want to confuse people about the movies. Besides, since ESB would have it's titale in the crawl-up, you couldn't very well Have it be called Star Wars Wpisde IV: Star Wars.
I think the A New Hope was just to avoid confusion. What bugs me is like on the SEs they'll have STAR WARS in big letters and a new hope just sorta down there.
Again, I know it's to avoid confusion, but I wih these movies would have a bit more uniformity. I heard for the DVDs they're all going to have the Phantom Menace font for them. I think that would be neat. It is all one saga after all.

No, it doesn't bother me. ANH is the original Star Wars. To many people who saw it in the theaters years ago, it will always be Star Wars, not ANH, the name Lucas stuck on it sometime later when he discovered he'd be making more movies. It was originally thought to be a stand-alone.

Southernjedi is correct. Star Wars wasn't called ANH when it originally came out in theatres it was just called Star Wars. It was going to be a stand-alone movie, but it became so big George got to make sequels. What's the big deal with just calling it Star Wars, it is the original SW. It doesn't annoy me at all, I call it that very often.
