As wonky as the head on that Luke figure is, he looks a bit better than mark Hamill does in that particular photo. I thought that was Aunt Beru for a sec .

I always just thought the 30th anniversary was of the Star Wars saga, in general. I don't think we need any more figures of the basic, main charectors. We need new ones, which Hasbro has vastly taken a giant step forward lately in that arena. I like some of the minor charectors, you may only catch a glimpse of in the movies. I think the EU figures are awesome as well. I especially enjoy the concept figures. I think that's a great way to honor the 30th anniverary. Capturing the charectors as they where very first envisioned. Yeah the EU figures where in books, games, etc. But they still where a part of Star Wars in the past 30 years. I've bought more figures in the last couple months then I have in my life! I think it's cool to go to the store, and look at a Boba Fett figure, portraying him in ESB, then on the next peg is Darth Malak, an EU figure. I love the way the figures have became more of a great variety.

all the figures from the cantina.
all the figures from the death star run.
I edited your list down to the figures that I wouldn't have a problem with seeing. The rest of them were either done this year (luke, han, vader, jawa, stormtrooper, cantina figures, etc.) or last year (garindan, death star gunner, r5-d4, etc.).
Yes, this is the 30th anniversay of the first Star Wars movie, but it is a celebration of the Star Wars saga. I think Hasbro has done a great job in satisfying demand in this year's collection. People do not want 50,000 more freakin' Darth Vader figures, but we still get them anyway (my second biggest complaint). People want figures from the movies they don't already have (or updated ones of figures that haven't been around in the last two decades).
The biggest criticism I have of Hasbro with regard to these figures is that, by now, every figure Hasbro releases should have articulation in the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. The technology is there and so they should just do it. The fact that we still get figures that don't move at the ankles irritates me beyond belief. Most of my McQuarrie concept figures can't even stand without propping them up against something. Ankle and knee articulation would wash that problem away for good. Waist articulation is also cool, but I don't think it is as necessary as all the others.
Oh, and in response to your comment about the 30th anniversay of the other movies, I don't think Hasbro will repeat the 30th anniversary theme. They may come up with some other way to honor them, like "The ESB Collection" or something, but I don't think the 30th anniversary theme will come up again. Why? Because the 30th anniversary of those movies is not as big of a deal as celebrating the release of the first film.
It was "Star Wars" that changed movie-making forever, not "Empire" or "Jedi." Everything else has just, simply put, enhanced the flavor of Star Wars. Which ultimately explains why releasing figures from every movie is appropriate for this year's collection. George has always said that Episode 4 was the strongest one he wrote, that is why he started the films there. He had already written the first three episodes as well, he just didn't film them back then. So, it really isn't the 30th anniversary of Episode 4. It is the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars universe.

All I’ll say is this. My parents did more to celebrate their 30th anniversary and they had been divorced for 20 years at the time .
Seriously I do wish it had been a little more ANH-centric. After all, when your grandpa has a birthday, you don’t celebrate all the kids he’s fathered, you give him a Twinkie and drive him around the block a few times and then lock him back in his closet... or at least that’s what my family does. Anyway, you celebrate him.
I’m kidding about that last part BTW!!! [We keep him in the basement].

If they were going to celebrate the 30th anniversary of A New Hope, it would have to be with something more than just another 4 inch tall Luke figure. Those are all peg warmers around here.
Heck even Darth Freakin' Vader sits on his peg like no one cares about him (or at least another Vader figure). I don't have any problem with then slapping a "30th Anniversary" logo on all the toys in the wave. Marvel Comics and DC Comics have done special anniversary logos for their characters and stuck them on every comic they publish, not just the character's title.
They're happy about the anniversary and celebrating by putting out notice on all their property.
I bet Malak sells better than Luke

Oh really? to be honest. I could care less about malak. he wasn't around 30 years ago. Hasbro has fooled everyone and it wants to appel to young fans. that's fine, just don't make stuff up.

Well, new fans are their most profitable market. They acknowledge collectors, but they market more to kids/ young teenagers. They're called TOYS for a reason.

True, they are toys...but at $7 a pop, how many children do you think are buying them?
These toys are being mainly directed at collectors.

I don't particularly care for the Hasbro figures... way too much attention to poseability for me vs. just good honest sculpts that don't come across as fragile. Give me an original figure from the 70's that can only move in 6 places, but yet looks sturdy and strong, vs. one that has 40-points of articulation and looks like the head will fall off if you take it out of the box.
I'm also not a fan of squeezing legs for "lightsaber slashing action" and stuff like that.
It's too bad Kenner went the way of the DoDo bird.

Hasbro has said repeatedly that the 30th Anniversary Collection is intended to celebrate the entire Star Wars saga. Yes, A New Hope is thirty years old, but so is Star Wars as a whole. It is true that they could have done an A New Hope centered collection this year, but they pretty much rode that horse with the Original Trilogy Collection in 2004, as Juke-Skywalker pointed out. Repeating that again this year wouldn't have been a smart business move.

I don't think it makes sense to make figures of a creature from the cantina that's seen for what, 5 seconds, but not make a new Princess Leia ANH figure. There's a Leia Endor Fatigues figure, there's a Leia as Bouush figure, but there's no Leia in Death Star Gown or medal Presentation gown figure. Its supposed to be the entire saga, and I think a few more actual movie characters with more than 10 seconds of screen time would be nice. The cantina creatures are okay for those who want to collect everything, but I saw them in the store and I was like "who the heck was that? when did it appear in the movie?"

One of those Cantina figures (Elis Helrot) isn't even in the movie (neither version from what I could see). Don't get me wrong, I like the Cantina figures but why did we get this one instead of one that is actually in the movie?? Where is the guy who "has the death sentence on twelve systems"? You know, the guy who threatens Luke saying, "You'll be dead." Has he ever been released?? Why can't we have him instead of a made up figure?? Please correct me if I am wrong, but I didn't see Elis anywhere in the film.
Oh and by the way, I don't really see the need to re-release Princess Leia for the 1,500th time. They never really do her justice in action figure form anyway (even the VOTC one sucks). But, whatever tickles your fancy I guess.
And for clarification, I feel the same way about Han and Luke. Heck, they're even getting ridiculous with Obi-Wan and Anakin from Episode III. How many of these figures do we have to continue to see each year?
PLEASE, PLEASE, can I get 50 more Darth Vader figues??? I don't have enough of them yet!!! (And yes, that is sarcasm.)
