AC Update, 18th - 24th Jan
===================================
Advisory Council Update ~ January 18th - 24th
===================================
I. JCC
II. Off-topic threads
III. Drugs and Alcohol on the JC
IV. AC Former Mod Members
V. Spoiler Titling System
VI. Point of Discussion
I. JCC
The JCC discussion that was addressed in the last update has slowed down somewhat, perhaps due to either a lack of more relevant issues to discuss or our own laziness. Discussion thus far has included spam, Senate/Ampitheatre re-direction of JCC threads, more spam, the hands-off approach to moderating, flooding in threads and more active moderator participation in their forum. We are now awaiting any further input or a decision from the higher-uppers on what action they will take to solve some of the problems discussed.
II. Off-topic threads
Gandolf
guided our attention to how lax the rules should be on threads that are considered off-topic in relation to a forum's purpose. The general consensus was that certain off-topic threads encourage community building, although such a thread should have some relation to the rest of the forum to at least justify its presence there.
III. Drugs and Alcohol on the JC
While it is acknowledged that debate in the Senate on drugs and alcohol has been of a mature nature, the question of how JCC handles alcohol and drug related topics was raised, since those of us in JCC are obviously all very immature and spend our lives gazing at cheap drinks advertisements in our bastardised basements. Discussion lead to where the line is drawn between community building, light-hearted threads and threads that could be perceived as offensive and inappropriate, considering that this is supposed to be a family-friendly board.
Views expressed included how the disallowance of threads promoting, and perhaps even discussing illegal substances is understandable, although casual discussion of legal substances such as drink is fine. On the other hand, such conversations could be watched more carefully to prevent them from sliding into comments that may easily influence the thoughts of some who are unfamiliar with drink. On the other, other hand, such influences are apparent in everyday life anyway. It is hoped that the rule on these threads will be clarified and perhaps adjusted, if that is necessary.
IV. AC Former Mod Members
Discussion is on-going, and we will soon decide whether the needs of AC4 currently include the viewpoint of ex-mods.
V. Spoiler Titling System
After the dawn of
this thread
, we proceeded to discuss whether the way spoilers are presented should be changed, and how. The much approved idea was to give spoilers generic category headings, for the result of spoilers being named, but the titles still remaining vague enough to keep members non-spoiled.
VI. Point of Discussion
What do you think about restriction on drugs and alcohol related conversation in JCC? Considering that this place is family-friendly, where do you think the line crosses between promotion and harmless comments? What would you consider to be appropriate, fair action to take when this line is crossed?
A few quotes from the AC thread:
Casual mentioning of drinking or drugs probably won't hurt anyone. However, when it turns into promotion or how good they are, they should be watched or locked.
Keep them from promoting it, but a 20 something admitting they drink on the boards should not = a bannable or lockable offence.
However, the big grey line appears when you have people joking about going to a bar, or posting that they'd love a drink. Where does that line go? In the social threads they were usually mentioning something about "mixing up the drinks". There are kids under 21 there, but it was all a part of the thread.
I don't think there's anything wrong with the "_______ is passed out on my couch" threads because they seem to be enjoyed by everyone who participates in them. It's great community building spam.
When people keep imitating them with parody threads, that becomes a problem in itself.
Discuss, now plz. And that's the end of the update from your friendly neighbourhood AC for this week, sans humour. I must say that I take pride in being completely humourless.

As much as I personally find alcohol foolish, it is legal. More it an accepted, even integral, part of society and human interactions for most western nations, indeed probably most nations.
As such it is foolish, I think, to try and ban it.
There still is a belief in personal accountability right?
Edit// OH and could you discuss feeding the mods some prunes? They seem to be having troubles with irregularity.

I agree 100% EXCEPT in the case of FanForce members mentioning that they partook in underage drinking (or linking to/posting pictures of) at a FanForce function.
That could be a legal and insurance sticky wicket.

Nice work on the update

About time someone had the tact and courage to say that.

This I also agree with. I don't think it would be very wise or would look good if FF members were mentioning that they did underage drinking at events. Just not a smart idea and really could hurt the image of TFN significantly.
Just my $.02

It doesn't take much courage to say something that's been said everytime anything of this nature is brought up.
Alcohol may be legal, but it is a controlled substance and is illegal for half of the members here, if the demographics I've seen are correct. Controlling the decisions about alcohol discussion at the JC are the sole right of the owners and they have made their feelings known. I suggest you guys get over it.

I am only 15 and my threads title is
Café Dragon: A plac to socialize and drink...
I personally see it as totally playful. I don't drink in real life, and I don't encourage it. I am just being playful, and feel that it is better for me to be messing around about drinking online than actually doing it in real life. But I will not object if I am asked to change the title.
Sicerely,
RockDragon

since when do the words "drink" and "drinking" automatically denote discussion of, or involvement of, alcoholic beverages?

It's a fallacy to try and change this place?
My mistake.
Or should this place be only what the owners want it to be, in which case lets ask them about a whole range of issues from religion to the JCC to the Senate. Why are you even here if we're just going to follow the owners wishes in every particular?

alcohol is illegal for people under the age of 21 (in the U.S.) to purchase, possess, and consume, NOT talk about or be exposed to in media.
please point out my fallacy.

Well put
farraday
. I agree that some things need to be changed. Some of the attitudes on here about certain aspects in pop culture, and the way they are dealt with on here are one of them. And it's your right to be able disagree with things that makes you unique. I rather have qualms about the whole way that alcohol & drugs are dealt with than just be a yes-man. Just my $.02 though.
