EricT - it's been a while so you may have already figured this out by now, but the point of lining fabric is to keep one piece of clothing from catching on another piece. therefore, you need slippery fabric. since you've already been to dharma trading, i'd recommend buying some of their habotai to line with - probably the 8 mm weight. lighter if your cloak is alreay too heavy, or heavier if your cloak needs a little extra weight. really lightweight habotai tends to pucker and pull threads when you sew it, so be careful.

i've had good luck finding wool at phoenix textiles (although not in the past month, for some reason) and at denver fabrics. both have already been linked, i think. the fabrics that i liked run about $8/yd.

on a non-fabric note, are there any good pictures of the back of qui-gon's tabards?

RE Qui-Gon's tabbards: not really. Try Padawan's Guide and look at the photo of Qui-Gon fighting Maul. Your best bet is freeze the DVD at appropriate points. Having done that, it appears to me that his tabbards differ from Obi-Wan's in that they are just two long pieces, one on each shoulder.

I even bought the Insider's Guide DVD after Ep I to try to figure out the costume. Unfortunately, Obi-Wan's was shown without the robe but Qui-Gon's was not.

Hello everyone. I want to make a female Twi'lek costume, but I'm not sure how to construct the tentacles on the tops of their heads. Any ideas? Thanks!

First off, I'd like to apologise for my ADD not allowing me to read through this whole thread. tongue

However, I am looking for a pattern to make Anakin's cloak from AOTC. I've found tonnes of patterns for the standard Jedi robe, but none for this one. The pics I got from padawansguide.com have been somewhat helpful, but they are just pics. If anyone can help me out with this, I'd greatly appreciate it. happy

As near as I can tell, Anakin's jedi robe from Attack of the Clones is just a garden variety cloak, only open up the sides. I think Simplicity still makes a cloak pattern that has armslits partway up the side seams- it's just part of the seam left open, nothing fancy. For Anakin's cloak, you would do this, but extend those side seam openings all the way down, so what you've got is technically a cloak with no side seams. Well, there is some side seam happening, from the neck down to roughly the upper arm, but it's left open and hanging from there on down.

You don't even have to redraw the pattern to get this effect- just sew the side seams down as far as the top of the armhole slit and that's it.

I didn't want to make another Jedi Robe question thread so I'm coming here to ask if anyone has looked at or used the McCalls M3663 pattern for a Jedi robe? I was looking at it the other day and thought the cape/robe looked quite a bit like some of the illustrations I've seen on some tutorial/tip sites. Just don't use the clasp/drawstring at the neck, leave out the embrodiery in the back, and eighty-six the trim on the edges. So does anyone have experience with this pattern?

I have no experience with McCall's 3663 but, from the illustration on the McCall's pattern search result, it looks reasonable. The hood would have to be 2 to 3 times bigger though.

Yeah, that too.. The hood did seem a bit small for what we'd use it for.

I've heard velcro works quite well. That, or just tack them down by hand. I really shouldn't talk though, I actually haven't gotten around to finishing mine yet, lol

I'm kinda lazy, mine are just pinned together with a safety pin under the obi. That keeps them even and I can take them apart to iron them more easily. I do have to tug them down once in a while, when I have been sitting, but the ends stay even. I also have velcro at the shoulders holding them on. Some people use snaps there, too.

I suppose I should just put a clear snap on tabards though. But maybe not, since I will have to be real careful with the iron! tongue

I just finished the anakin ep II costume TODAY. Finally, after a lot of hassle of working on the cape. It was a lot more work than it looked. I used the actual fabric used in the movies, vilt, coming from the same Dutch company who delivered it to Trisha Biggar. It flows great, although it's really thick, that's why the tabbards at the front look great and don't twist. Here are some pictures of it:
    http://home.wanadoo.nl/goldlady/anakin_costume.htm

The only thing is, the belt wasn't ready yet, so I used another custom design belt just for show.
