RE: Harry Potter Cloaks
Do you meant the Cloak (worn in Cold Weather) or the Robe (what they normally wear). The Cloak can be made using many Cloak Pattern, shun for the hood.
Try this Mailing List
MadameMalkins
The recommanded pattern and feedbacks on how the pattern should be modified had been discussed there before. So do the REAL design of the Robes (no hood).
I'm suppose to do a Moaning Myrtle
1942
Uniform
soon
anyway.

RE: Harry Potter Cloaks
Check the Mailing List I had posted. It's had been mentioned there already with some patterns recommandation and modifications.
For Gryffindor badge, if you want it in the actual size and shape, you can order it from a member (Jo) of that ML for USD10 (PayPal only
). Think her next available badge will be Slytherin but they might still be looking for more people to share the cost of digitizing the design first.
If you don't mind the badge to be smaller and not so accurate, try eBay. It's been sold there for around USD8.90-11.90. There is also a website that sell the patch for USD9.90 but I think I shouldn't post it here cause he also sell SW Patches.

another option for the patches is making it yourself. a fabric story should have the embriodery thread and other things you will need, but it is a time consuming project!

A Cosplayer here had also made her Ravenclaw one using Felt cut to the appropiate shape and glued onto a backing before sewing it onto her robe. It doesn't look bad in pictures.

RE: Harry Potter Cloaks
i'm working on one of these now. i just modified the padawan's guide jedi robe and made a curved piece for the back instead of a hood. as for the patches...i found them on ebay for around 6 US dollars apiece. smaller than in the movie but still nice quality.

RE: Harry Potter Cloaks
I'm staring my planning phases for a custom wizard school uniform, for my wizard school, Varrstrang. There will be a different color pattern for the sweater, having it be a solid color of the house's dark color(in this case, Dragoonior black), and it will have the same striping, in a solid lighter color(in this case, Dragoonior Red), and there will be house and school robes, with the school robes being black, with the House patch on it, and the house robes being a solid color; the house's lighter color, with the darker color striping it, and the house patch on it. The school robes would be worn for normal events, while the house robes would be worn to occasions were house spirit is necessary(quidditch matches, worn by the quidditch teams, etc.)
How do you like my idea?

RE: Harry Potter Cloaks
I'm hand embroidering my Ravenclaw patch and it's about 70% done. Having not done any embroidery before it's been a work of trial and error but I'm quite happy with it. After I finish this one I'm going to try Slytherin Quidditch patch, which is practically the same as the patch on the robe but with a silver lining.
If you decide to try embroidering, here's a good reference pic of the Gryffindor Patch:

RE: Harry Potter Cloaks
I made a HP costume for last Halloween and I liked the patches at
www.scifipatch.com
They are pretty close to the movie versions. I spent ages looking around for the right design! They were only 7 bucks and they have all 4 houses.
If anyone's interested in seeing my costume, you can read about it here:
http://www.padawansguide.com/mycostumes/harrypotter.shtml
I cut apart my college graduation robe and used the general shape for a pattern, adding the small non-functional hood.
Payless had perfect Hermione-type shoes also!

RE: Harry Potter Cloaks
Righto, as I get farther into my costume I find how incompetant a sewer I really am! Thankfully Darth_Eagle pointed me to this thread so that I may harass my fellow HP costume makers with silly questions instead of the other costumers.
I have no clue how to line, I checked out a bunch of sewing books from my local library the other day. They were helpful, but the examples I tried to understand were confusing. I just want to line my robe! I think I might do the free-hanging lining, but I'm not really sure if that would work. I've read y'all have made cloaks/robes, what form of lining did you do? And can ya help nutter with hers?

RE: Harry Potter Cloaks
While the movie robes are lined, mine is not. (I made it long before I knew anything about lining, nor did I really have the time to do that extra step anyways.) It's made out of gabardreme and IMO flows as well without lining as it would with lining.
