Two recommended patterns:
McCalls 3663--Three "Mists of Avalon"/Arthurian legend style women on the front. The woman on the far left, in blue, is actually wearing a cloak over her dress. That is one of the patterns recommended.
Simplicity 5840--The "jedi" pattern. The blue cloak that the girl is wearing, or you can alter the brown cloak he wears (instructions on how to do that here:

Which one, the McCalls? If you buy the pattern according to your chest size, you shouldn't have to alter too much. You might want to cut a muslin out a size large to test fit, though, and check to see what the ease is (should be at the bottom of the envelope back) just to make sure before you cut out the real one.

Oh no, I just meant in general. I'll head to the fabric store tomorrow and check out the patterns. I'll probably go with the Simplicty just so I can use the same pattern for my Jedi robe
Ok, so now what type of fabric would you recommend for the Quidditch robe? I have no idea about fabrics other than it looks like it's a solid peice (no texture) and very light and 'airy'.

Well, if you're getting the Simplicity pattern, you really shouldn't have too much to alter. It's unisex, so the size you'd get for the Jedi part should work.
I really couldn't tell you about the Quidditch robes fabric. At the moment, I'm not interesting in making myself any. (Of course, that could change...)

Hey all, JoAnn's has Simplicity patterns on sale for $.99
They weren't a lot of help as far as fabric goes though. I brought in a picture of the robe and they just basically told showed me every fabric in the store. I was thinkning about a satin lining and rayon for hte outer part. Unfortunatly they didn't have any solid colors of rayon.
EDIT: From searching some HP groups I've found that most people go with a polyester or cotton-wool material. I was concerned that satin would be too shiny so I may go with this. I'm starting to wonder if this is a little too big for a first project
But I'm learning a lot

RE: Harry Potter Cloaks
I'm working on quidditch robes, and for mine, I'm using a linen-cotton blend. I got it at JoAnn's, and I think it's still available, but only in white (I dyed mine).
For the robe pattern, I used Simplicity 8311, Wizard costume. In the movie, it looks like all the robes are the same length, because depending on the height of the actor, it hits anywhere between ankle and knee, so I lopped off the bottom of the pattern. Next I added a middle back seam, seamed down to the waist. In the middle, a triangular godet (quarter-circle of fabric inserted into a normal seam), which is true to the movie, but can only be seen if you freeze-frame the quid matches in DVD. When standing, the two robe sides fall shut and this piece is hidden. It only goes down to mid- or lower- thigh. The hood is a rectangle of fabric, folded in half, then seamed along a long edge, which is the back of the hood. This makes a nice point that's not too long, and has an authentic seam from the movie. The lining is cut exactly the same and sewn inside out, then attached around the edges. I hope to find a brown leather shoelace for the lacing. The pants are a creamish corduroy that I picked up at JoAnn's last fall. The leg and arm guards will be sintra (sp?) formed to look like soccer or hockey guards then covered with brown leather from an old coat I got at Salvation Army. I'll attach it (hopefully) using spray adhesive, making puffs with quilting, and backing with cotton for comfort. I'll attach them with elastic.
Now all I need is somewhere to buy the sweater (I DON'T knit) and I'm set! Anyone with more questions about this can pm or email me.

I've had my Hogwarts uniform since October but I still don't have a tie to go with it. Anyone know where to buy one online or someone who makes them?

Jayne, sounds like you've got it going well. I'd love to see pics as soon as you're done. I'm going fabric shopping with my mom next weekend. For the sweater I was just thinking about getting a scarlet mock-turtle neck because I have had no luck finding them on-line. And how did you do the lower back? I was thinking about making mine true to the second movie where they don't have that, but instead but a small rectangle out of the bottom of the robe. For my pads I was thinking of getting some weight-lifting gloves, then some hockey pads and painting them brown, then using quilting and vinyl over them to give the look, and replacing the elastic with buckles like from the movie. And I already have a pair of white heavyweight karate pants which should work well. You can probably find a brown leather shoelace at any department store.
As for the tie, a few months ago I was in Dillards and they had a tie that looked like it would have been perfect. I went to the website for the tie manufacturer and it looked like they also had a perfect slytherin. Unfortunatly at the time I never thought I would be doing a HP costume and didn't shell out the $30, but if you look around hard enough you should be able to find one on-line.

Today I was at a celtic festival and there was a vendor selling custom wooden wands (with hollowed insides that included various magical items...i.e. unicorn hair, dragon heart stings, etc). I got a really nice ebony wood, 14", with a raven feather inside. You can pick your wood/magical properties/length combos. If anyone wants the website, PM me. Their prices are extremely reasonable.
