Embroidery thread/floss works the best for embroidery (and comes in a huge selection of colors, but if you want it to have a sheen to it, either look for specialty embroidery floss or regular thread. Just realize that you'll have to use more strands of regular thread when working on it, so it has some definition.

I'm sure for the movie, the house emblems were machine embroidered, to ensure uniformity on all the costumes. This is typically done with rayon thread, which gives it that sheen. Popular brands of rayon thread for machine embroidery include Sulky and Madeira.

However, for hand embroidery, it may be easier to use rayon embroidery floss from DMC. It will still have that sheen to it, but comes in a 6-strand thread like typical embroidery floss. (this is usually separated into 2 or 3 strands for doing the actual embroidery though) However, if the color selection is not what you'd like, buy the Sulky or Madeira thread and just use multiple strands.

Course, if you have a friend with a nice computerized embroidery machine (for example the Viking Designer I), you could have the house emblems digitized and have the machine do it for you. wink

Caitlin I believe the student robes are a suit weight wool. Wool tends to be expensive, but sometimes you can find wool blends that are not too bad in price. If you live in an area that has discout fabric stores that's usually a great place to pick up inexpensive fabric (Los Angeles Garment District, San Jose Fabrics R Us - etc).

If you are looking for something cheaper than wool a heavy cotton looks fine. I threw together a last minute Malfoy costume last year and ordered a robe made of cotton from garbtheworld.com. It wasn't 100% screen accuarate, but it was close enough since I didn't have time to sew.

imalittlewaterbug, if you can't get it embroidered by June, there's now a cut-out Gryffindor patch ("ULTRA DET. 5" FANCY GRYFFINDOR costume CUT-OUT") that'll give you the embroidered-directly-on look without all the trouble of doing it yourself, if you don't mind spending a little money on it. I've got their Gryff and their Ravenclaw patches, the 4" ones, and they're both nicely done, although that should really be an eagle on the Ravenclaw one...

I made some robes for someone last year and used gaberdine. It draped really well, and was well priced.

imalilwaterbug - If you are a beginner and don't kow how to sew, it's going to be much easier to follow an existing pattern than to play around with altering one. You might want to take advantage of some of the pattern sales that are going on this weekend (99 cents for Butterick & McCall's at JoAnn's - I think Simplicity is on sale at Hancocks).

If you want to dive in to altering your pattern you would first want to purchase some cheap muslin fabric to experiment with. Lay out your existing hood pattern piece and use it as a guide to draw a new pattern that is longer (Keep the neck areas the same so it will fit the body of the gown).

Caitlin - I don't know if you've been to Madame Malkin's Yahoo group, but there may be some people there who have used your specific pattern and altered it.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MadameMalkins/

As I recall, the members there have gotten into a lot of detail about the hoods (I *think* at one time there were discussions/theories about the hoods not really being functional ones, etc).

You might want to do a search on 'hood' and 'student robe' before asking questions in the group. Your answers may already be posted happy

Well, the old hoods weren't functional, were they? They were almost more like really big collars. But it looks like the new robes have functional hoods.

Why? Why must they do this to us and redesign all the costumes!? So. Not. Fair.
