Hi,
I don't mean to butt in/hope you guys don't mind, but I was google searching Mara's costumes to look for what people did on the black costume and came across this thread.
I did Mara's green costume for the Rebel Legion, so I figured I'd add some comments on what did and didn't work for me.
For her brooch: I did black femo and spray-painted it silver to get a nice two color tone (I made about 5 of these darn things before settling on one I liked) The biggest problem I have now is the silver sometimes comes off on my dress.
For her shoulder pads: I used brown leather. I thought the ones they put on Shannon were really ugly. (and fortunately, the RL is a little more lenient than the 501st as to what you can use for your base img) The book cover of "Visions of the Future" looked metal, but I didn't have the tools.
My costume has a lot of problems, and I've been working on upgrading it, but I figured I should still offer my 2 cents.
For those that want to take a look, here's my original costume, mistakes and all. I've changed it a bit since then Original attempt Unfortunately, I don't have any good pics with the new shoudler pads or brooch, but this is the best I can find: side view
Seeing what some of you have done, you guys could do a better job than I did :-)

Spacelady: Kwik sew is the way to go. There's two they have that are workable with only a few changes,
one is pattern 3273
(hope this works)
the other is pattern 2722
there is even pattern 3052

I went to a halloween party one year as Mara Jade -- I wore all black, got some high heeled boots that have some embelishments, and I had a sliver cape. It wasn't at all 'Mara Jade' but I fell in love with her and that was what I told people, well, if they took notice! *lol*

so i posted a short while back while i was still making my Mara Jade costume. I'd like to thank everyone for their imput and help. i had a full completion of the costume in April so i thought i'd share my results. here are some pics:
the shin guards are missing in these. i'd been wearing them all day and they were starting to get uncomfortable, so i took them off for the masquerade. Also, the belt piece kept fallingoff and i didnt bother putting it back on after a certain point in the day.

You're in my Area Burnt, you should try Fabric Hut in norfolk. My friend Jane bought the last of it a few months back but they said they sould be getting more in (I havent been back since then). But it was a nice black vinyl, but not the wet-look kind. They are a bit more pricey than other fabric stores, but since you dont have to pay shipping, its prolly the same price as you would end up paying if you found it online. They are also alot bigger than the other stores around. If you need directions or any info on them, pm me here or on the TA website.

OOOOO ok! Sweet! My mom has been meaning to head down to norfolk anyways, so when she does, I'll check it out. Thanks so much for the info!

I made a Mara Jade costume for myself a few weeks ago:
It was a lot of fun to make I used Kwik Sew 2722 for the bodysuit, which is a great pattern btw. It took little alteration to get it fitting correctly. Most of the altering work was for the piping down the front. The fabric is a 4 way stretch pvc, with very little shine. I tried to find something with no shine at all, but everything I saw was too thin. This one is a little thicker and stronger. For the cloak I went with purple, because I found a really nice pale fabric, and I liked the look. I hunted high and low for some nice shin pads, but I just couldn't get any nice ones here in oz, so I just wore the knee pads instead, and I am happy with how they looked I made a pouch for the back to carry my camera and stuff since I was wearing this at a convention, which just happened to slide around and cover the back fastening
I had such a hard time trying to find a wig that looked nice that I just ended up dyeing my hair. lol
I have more information and photos on my site: http://www.starfirephoenix.net/marajade.htm

Don't understand the fabric talk, but what I do know is that your Mara costume looks exactly like the one worn by Shannon Baksa on the Star Wars Insider a few years ago. Good job starfire-phoenix!

Happy dance happy dance.
Well my decision to make the Mara costume was made easier by finding a bolt of wonderfully soft 2way stretch matt pvc. It has a slight texture to it and feels a little like skin to touch.
It's what I used for my Satine black diamonds costume gloves:
Having sewn with it before (well the gloves are a little scratchier on the inside) I know this project will actually get done with minimal fuss;) And I'll wind up making matching gloves from the same fabric;)
I have belt buckles for the shoudler straps and will easily find leather. I'm a littlw worried about the belt buckle as it is a little larger than the ones on the shoudler straps. I will probably just use the same size for a while. The clasp for the cloak may need to be altered from something else.
I will probably make the shin guards myself, so long as I have access to a heat gun!
