I noticed on the TCSS resistor chart that they list a 1.5ohm, 5watt resistor for the setup that I intend to go with, but the Luxeon Resistor Calculator says I need a 1.5ohm, 4watt resistor. Will this one watt differance cause any problems? There seems to be a lot more 5watt than 4watt resistors.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanx

If I can recall from when I did my first saber (and that was way back on page 110 or so), I believe that would be fine. I know I couldn't find the exact one I needed either and had to go with a higher rated one as well.

I've made both, and IMHO, the LED is way superior to the EL system. If you're familiar with wiring EL, LED is a walk in the park. LED is more durable, as I've broken EL wires before I even get them in the tube, let alone take a swing at someone. LED is brighter, to the point where it's almost a joke if I hold one of my EL's up to my LED's. The biggest thing to me, however, is that the EL's are always a little too blade-heavy, and no matter how well I weight the hilt and pommel, I can never make them comfortable in my hand to to katas with.
Try both, if for nothing else than the learning experience. But I think you'll end up liking LED more.

PB... if you plan on striking the saber against objects fairly hard--you might want to either create your own "Luxeon" style LED saber (via TCSS or akin to that), or buy the Force FX saber and CONVERT it to a Luxeon style setup.
It's not really all THAT hard to do this--but it does take persistence, patience, attention to detail, and accumulation of knowledge in electronics, wiring, soldering, etc.
If you do not plan on hitting things too hard... the Force FX can handle "light" collisions.

Since this thread is dying quite quickly, I suppose I could jumpstart it with this video... an in-depth Hyperblade vs. Luxeon comparison.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=k5Ws91SGpDA
Before any folks make any judgements--keep in mind that the Hyperblades were sent to me as a donation, and I know very little about them thus far. I'm certain that the blue one is a v1, and fairly confident that the green is a v2... but--I may be wrong. Anyhow, I think the video gives at least a very nice perspective on things overall, and people can make their own decisions on what they like, dislike or if they like it all!
Hope everyone had a great New Year's celebration... I had a blast...

Great video, Greytale.
It was amusing to watch, as always. That is the first time I've seen the Hyperdyne set-up with the luxeon set-up in the same shot. Most interesting!
I also have something to add to this thread. I know that this thread is for LED Blades, but I made a very cost-effective lightsaber stand to display my hilts (blades removed of course). I'll post it now, and if anybody has an objection, I'll edit it out.
So I went into my local OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware) with the mission of making a cheap, vertical saber hilt stand for my army of luxeons. I have some bugs to work out, but I'd have to say mission accomplished!
First, I bought three parts:
To the left is a "Joist Hangar" 2x4 ($0.54). To the right is a "Framing Anchor" ($0.39). Both of these items were found in the building materials section where they sold pieces for metal fences.
This is an acrylic sheet (8" x 10") that costed $1.90. I'm considering not using acrylic anymore because it's a pain to cut. I think that a large diameter PVC (1.5" or so) cut in half lengthwise would be sturdier and look cleaner.
So then I riveted the Framing Anchor to the back of the Joist Hangar (I had to drill a hole in each item beforehand). I then cut the acrylic sheet into five strips (8" x 2"). I use two acrylic strips for each saber stand, arranged like this:
I used plumber's goop to secure the acrylic to the Joist Hangar. The Framing Anchor acts as a stabilizer so the stand won't tip over when a saber is placed on it. I have an anakin AOTC FX hilt that is VERY top-heavy and it isn't very secure in the stand. All of my luxeon hilts, though, are lighter and more bottom heavy (batteries and all that) and fit in these great.
As a final touch, I cut out a small trapezoid (isosceles) of foam and glued it to the bottom of the Joist Hangar like so:
This is how it displays:
I have my blades stored elsewhere, and I like to display my hilts when they are not in use.
I think my next versions will use PVC halfpipes to replace the acrylic. I'll probably spraypaint the entire stand black and use black foam instead of gray. I also plan to print out some "plaques" on cardstock since each of my sabers has a name and birthdate I'd like to showcase.
These stands look a little rough for displaying finer sabers, but I personally enjoy the "Hardware" look since almost all of my sabers are classified as such.

Hey, looks great, AOI! I don't personally use stands, as my sabers get used every bloody week (no joke), but... I would do something like that and enjoy it if I put them up! Very nice...

A couple of days ago I found a cool white lux K2 200lm @ 1000mA, the only problem is that I can't get them on the star. What is recommended? I can't find just the star footpads anywhere.
Thanx.
BTW Greytale nice video

Thanks Grey... I actually just posted another short acro video too, but... well--I ain't SideSwipe or Aniis Cheurfa or anything. Anyhow.
Well, the "emitter only" LEDs *can* be placed on a blank PCB star, but you'll want to be certain you get everything right. If you can't use some kind of non-conductive epoxy-like stuff to get the emitter to sit on the blank star, at LEAST try thermal paste. Then, you simply solder in the leads to their corresponding areas on the star.
Granted + warning: I have *JUST* recently tried doing that with a Lux V emitter onto a previously "complete" LED & star which fried. So... I ripped off the dead LED, and utilized the blank star. Works for me since whatever LED was there before--it had been soldered on in a similar fashion to how I put the Lux V on there.
I have not thoroughly tested it yet (for heat, long usage, etc.), but it does work correctly...
