I'd say if you're a first-timer do a Jedi. They're the easiest. A good pattern to use is Simplicity #4450. A very helpful site in Jedi costuming would be http://www.padawansguide.com . And from there you'll find various links as well. Also this forum has a thread index which should come in handy. You might want to READ IT FIRST as it says! tongue

First, pick a costume that you like. If it's something you can't get really excited over then it won't be as fun to make.
Second, once you find a costume you want to make go slowly and if you are a novice sewer then expect to make a lot of mistakes along the way. Mistakes are good though. It's how we learn. happy

Simplicity has some SW themed patterns available that you could start with. I would say they would be a good tool because you wouldn't have to draft any patterns and could just follow the included instructions. Perhaps you could start with their Princess Leia white dress?

Simplicty pattern # 4443

if you go to simplicity.com/ and look under costumes and it'll be under one of those categories. there aren't a ton so it shouldn't be too difficult to find.

Like I said, I used Simplicity #4450 and it turned out great. I have a pic of my costume, but I have to upload it online before I can post it here.

Just make sure you remember to take your time with it and not to rush it. and dont get frusterated with it. If its not going your way at first sit down think about it and do it again. Best of luck with it.

For your first time, I'd advise doing a General Grievous costume. Make sure it has hydraulic arms that split in two. You'll want two animatronic bodyguard droids programmed to follow you. Be certain that you construct the lightsabers to the exact specifications of the film. Oh, yeah, you better get the design on the back of the cape right down to the last pixel. silly silly silly wink

Another good rule in costuming (or any time you're working with an unfamiliar pattern or altering an existing one) is to make a 'muslin' or mock-up out of cheap fabric first. That way, if you make a mistake you can work out the bugs on the cheap stuff. Then, once you have it fitting right and all, you can cut into your good fabric without fear. grin Have fun!

May the Force be with you,
~'Tom'~

That is an excellent tip. Wish I had this person helping me do that first. My first one is not coming out the way I wanted, and she keeps altering it, in the opposite direction of what I want. I better hurry up and buy some muslin to practice on the others.
