Younglings Costumes - Any starting points?

I am wondering if there are some good directions for the Younglings costumes seen in Ep. II..there are pictures here: http://www.padawansguide.com/baby.shtml
and some discussion here - but I am having posting problems at this forum - www.rebellegion.com (jedi younglings).
So, I will post here and (1) hope that I have not created a thread already in action - search didn't indicate one...but...; and, (2) ask a few questions:
A. Best pattern to start from?
B. No robes for these little ones right?
C. Fabric of choice?
Ok - appreciate the help and patience. Dad is looking at doing something for a Fanboy in the making for his 6 year old b-day. Originally he wanted a "jedi robe" then saw these pictures...may just do the robe..so he can alternate.
YES - Dad is the seamstress in this house...

Hi there Rod! I love the youngling tunics, they are so cute and fairly easy to make. I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my abilities:
A. I'd start out with a basic robe pattern and just cut it so it is lower in the back and curves up to create that bell shape. You can get robe patterns for kids from any pattern maker. They are easy to find. Alternatively I'd use a karate outfit. They also do make Jedi tunic patterns for kids but they are more like the grown up tunics.
B. We don't see them with robes in the movie but that doens't mean they don't have them. If you want to go compeltely by the movie, then no.
C. If you want texture to your fabric I love the material Calcutta. It's fantastic. Raw silk is also another option. The key to finding a good fabric for Jedi tunics is a matter of going to the store and just touching them and finding one you like.
Hope this helps!

A good place to start would be a kid's karate pattern. I got McCall's 4103 for my nephew. Even if the tunic won't work, even for modification, the pants pattern would work great.

Well Dad is the SEAMSTER in our house too.....spent a lot of time watching my grandmother sew when I was a kid.
I took my robe, this first one I made, and cut it down (Drastically) so I could recycle the fabric. The fabric is cotton onasburg in a cool natural color and weave. IT WAS CHEAP TOO. My thought was not spending a lot of cash on the kids robes as they would just grow out of it. After being washed numerous times (I dyed the fabric in the washer-something I would not reccomend) the fabric has a great been-in-the-desert-of-Tattooine-for-a-while look. I measure my little squirt who is 2 1/2 by taking a tape and measuring from floor to shoulder to floor.....about 58". Then I rough cut the fabric in one piece(no shoulder seam). I kind of went from there, but as I said, I am recycling a previous garment.
Another thought. If you arre looking for great costume and aren't stuck on "Canon", I took my set of tabbards/obi and cut it down. The shoulders "pooch" way out, in a football shoulder pad sort of way. I made them out of the same onasburg but a quad thickness to give it some bulk (like I said it was cheap-and it was on sale). I will try to take a pic for reference.
The tabs and obi was made like a "V" of cloth with the Obi attached at the intersection of the "V".
Pics on way.

If you want a lightsaber later: The sabers the younglings in the movie used were either small Qui-Gon saber toys (from the Droid Attack game, if I am not mistaken), or a modified version of the toy saber that came with some action figures. Here is a tutorial for the latter.
If you want a blade that lights up, then there are non-licensed (, not Star Wars-looking) toy sabers available for around $10 each that you can scavenge the blade from. Some are pretty good, actually, made with a string of LEDs just like MR's, but kid-sized.

I'm the one who started the Youngling costume discussion in the Rebel Legion forums. I am making those for my 2 kids for Halloween and a Rebel Legion/501st Halloween-related event. (My kids are 2½ and 1...a bit young for the Bear Clan outfit, but so adorable!!!)
I started out with the Simplicity "Star Wars" pattern for kids, I don't think they make it anymore (to avoid legal issues), but you can probably find it in some stores or maybe eBay. I had to majorly alter it though in order to get the right sort of curve with enough fabric to make it look right. Though, the smallest the pattern does is a child's 7 and my son is about 4-5 and daughter is in 12 months...so I had to alter the pattern and the size. If you'd like to see a picture of my patterns and/or my finished costumes, I plan on putting that on the Rebel Legion soon. You don't have trouble viewing the forums at The Rebel Legion do you?
I'm also making moccasins for my kids because that's what the younglings wear instead of boots. I can post pictures of my patterns for those too, if you like.
If I have time, I'll be making lightsabers for them out of dowels and wood greeblies.
If you want to discuss more, you can email me: rae_rae 1701 @ yahoo . com (no spaces).
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the note here too. I can view the forums, but not able to post, since I don't have a costume picture! :-) I would love to see a post of the costume you made. My little guy is a bit older (5 going on 6). But, I think this will be the next project to tackle once his slightly older sister's witch-princess costume is done. [Which has been a learning experience as she is a bit larger than the pattern in places - but not in others...let's just say if Dad wasn't already bald, this would have endangered every head on his head! :-)]
I am going to search out the martial arts pattern - I have seen that one at stores before - and see what I can do with that.
Someone on one of the forums talked about http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/ as a good location for cotton fabrics of larger widths. Anyone familiar with this company? Our nearest fabric/sewing store is about an hour from our rural little town. So, more information I am armed with about patterns and fabric...the better I am - especially the way us guys get handled in fabric stores! "Oh, you um you sew, REALLY...huh." :-)

My kids are small enough, I was able to use left over fabric for their costumes. Lots of times, fabric stores will have "Red Tag" clearance sections where you can find nice fabrics for cheap. I keep my eyes on those. You might want to try that if your fabric store has a section like that.
We have a Halloween party this Saturday (the 20th) so I'll probably post pictures on the Rebel Legion sometime after that. I'm working feverishly to get the finishing touches (leather belts, son's moccasins, etc...) finished up.

Mieal -
Great suggestion - I will look. I also saw some flannel recently that was discounted and thought that that might work for the tunics these younglings are wearing. Thoughts?
http://www.padawansguide.com/baby.shtml
Hey, another question - maybe it is me...but there is a group shot on the above link of the young padawans...look at the detail on their robes...looks like the bottoms have a large band along that bottom edge.
BUT, unless my eyes are failing, I don't see that in the movie scene shots. A band like that would help add weight to the costume, just curious as to whether I was seeing things or misunderstanding things.
Appreciate the great suggestions!

Ok in the obsessing category - I thought I should add these to this post. The first is an interesting pattern that has some similiarities to the clothes in question and is made for kids.
The second is one of those great examples of what is awesome on the web - another detailed site about Jedi costumes. Others were mentioned above, just thought I would add this one.
Thanks again for the help and suggestions.

Rod, I created a sort of "mini-tutorial" if you'd like to see what I did for my kids' costumes:
Jedi Younglings
You're right about the bottom band, some costumes have it, and some don't.

Now those are some of the most adorable padawans I have seen! Thanks for sharing the link and the information. The witch-princess costume for next week is about done...then a moment or two to consider if this will be the birthday boy's present in Spring! :-)

Ha! Rod, thanks for your comment about my site!
There are far simpler kimono patterns out there than Folkwear. Actually, because you're going to alter it, just start with a kid's gi (sp?)or kimono pattern.
Mieal_L_Deneb, great tutorial. I've never gotten around to writing up mine.
