Well, folks, thanks for the additional comments about Folkware's Kimono pattern. Here is the costume that was a must finish for Halloween.
Now on to the Youngling's with a full Jedi Robe. I happened to luck out and was where I could attend the Jo-Ann Fabric sale on "Black Friday" and for less than $20 total got a great brown linen mix that will be perfect for a five year old Jedi-hopeful! :-) I also found a 100% cotton knit that has the look of the material used in the costumes in the original pictures that started this discussion.
So, I have the notes from so many of you and as I work my way through this, I can assure many of you that I will be begging for help!
His 6th birthday is in March...plan to make two sets...so his fellow 6 year old best friend/fanboy buddy can have a set to play in when they get together!
Thanks again for the advice.

RodFleck posted: Someone on one of the forums talked about http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/ as a good location for cotton fabrics of larger widths. Anyone familiar with this company? Our nearest fabric/sewing store is about an hour from our rural little town. So, more information I am armed with about patterns and fabric...the better I am - especially the way us guys get handled in fabric stores! "Oh, you um you sew, REALLY...huh." :-)R
Dharma Trading is a great company to work with. They're friendly and very fast with their shipping, and also answer questions very quickly. All of my purchases from them have been great experiences, and the fabric quality has been excellent. If you want to know exactly what you'll be getting, buy one of their swatch books.

I met a woman out of the Pittsburgh fan force that made her kids costumes. amazing thing is she made them so they can grow and get dirty. Not to mention wear shoes underneath.
velcro is the key she told me.

First , ask the youngling if he's as obsessed with SW as you are. If he is, great.
Next, ask him if this is something that will embarass him when he gets older. If not, great. Proceed.
Next, ask him if this will lead to a lifelong obsession that may prevent him from getting any dates when he becomes interested in girls. If not, great. Proceed. Make the costume.

LOL ROF2
Ok my youngling is five...and loves starwars...so... I think he will have fun with it for a while...if he doesn't like it a year or two from now...fold up the jedi robe and the rest and years from now he may find it in the mail when he has a little guy.
But, I really had to laugh about this one. See dad isn't that obsessed with it. I enjoy the movies, read a few books, and enjoy the little galactic figures my son is obsessed with, and we even visited a Star Wars shop down in Aberdeen. But, obsessed...no...not really! ;-)

For those that haven't ever stopped or visited this guy's shop...truly it had me speechless and my kids were in absolute heaven. It is in Aberdeen, Washington - Sucher & Sons star wars shop.
I found some fabrics at Jo-Ann's that will work i think for what I am going to make for the little guy...Also made a robe pattern using the info you all provided. So, will jump into this effort after the holidays!

RodFleck posted: I am wondering if there are some good directions for the Younglings costumes seen in Ep. II..there are pictures here: http://www.padawansguide.com/baby.shtml
and some discussion here - but I am having posting problems at this forum - www.rebellegion.com (jedi younglings).
So, I will post here and (1) hope that I have not created a thread already in action - search didn't indicate one...but...; and, (2) ask a few questions:
A. Best pattern to start from?
B. No robes for these little ones right?
C. Fabric of choice?
Ok - appreciate the help and patience. Dad is looking at doing something for a Fanboy in the making for his 6 year old b-day. Originally he wanted a "jedi robe" then saw these pictures...may just do the robe..so he can alternate.
YES - Dad is the seamstress in this house...

I would start with the tunic. It will be the easiest part and the most noticable part of this costume. I would probably suggest a pattern for a children's blazer or suit jacket. From there, you would just tweak the fit to make it look more like a tunic than a blazer or jacket. I would probably use a cotton fleece, then line it with a satin or silk. a cotton fleece is a basic, cheap fleece, but does not have the fuzzy feel on the outside, adding the satin inside the costume gives it a richer appearance and makes it seem thicker and more expensively done. Also, adding a satin or silk lining can make it flow better depending upon the thickness of the fleece itself. Generally the padawans do not have robes, but if you want to make a robe, there should be patterns for a normal robe running around somewhere, and all you'd have to do is copy that pattern, line it, and then add a hood and possibly some buttons to button it and keep it on, being as it will be on a child.
Hope that helps

OK, I'm going to go ahead and make this one for about four or five Younglings. I'm more or less re-creating Order 66 on film. I wonder what the kids'll think when I tell them they're just supposed to 'play dead'?
My question is, is it possible to dye faux suede? That's what I've got for the moccasins (as buying that much leather would kill me, LOL), but it's closer to a sand color rather than the tan. Also, what material would be good to put on the bottoms? Since they're going to be lying down, the bottoms will show, and spats will be rather obvious.

When I had my son's made, I went to Joann's fabric and found a good thick off white looking cloth. The undershirt part was made of the same fabic. The tunic part I bought this heavy brown fabric, ended up buying to much so he had enough left over for a cloak. We used my tai kwon do uniform top as a pattern. Worked out really well. Then he decided he didn't want to wear it for halloween.

I'd imagine that you could dye faux suede, but I'd try it on a swatch of it before diving right in on the mocs. If you make moccasins, you don't need to worry about the bottom of them because they'd be the same material. Younglings Here's my blog & mini "tutorial" on how I made my kids' costumes. Hope that helps.
