I don't think this is a Legion thing, but an individual garrison thing. Cloud City has some members who joined with the Blackhole Trooper (black stormtrooper) as their introduction costume. As long as the costume is 501st acceptible, that's all that counts. But again, that is up to the pervue of the individual garrisons as is the case in Miana's garrison. It is always best to check with the local GML (garrison membership liason) before persuing a costume for 501st membership.

Ditto on the part about many events or invitation mostly asking for TKs. Friend was sad with the fact that for the Rose Parade, they are only asking for "White Troopers" from the international Garrisons/Outposts and he's a TIE Pilot like me.
Over here, that is always the case too as TK are most easily recognized by the public. Even when I become a TK which I HAVE to eventually, I might still not be called up for certain events as am too short tho' I'm sure I'm not the shortest.
Then again, taking the mentality of a fellow trooper, it's BETTER to be different than same as everyone else. He has the most Imperial Costume/Armor among us and yet none are TK or TD or TX or TS or even TB; and half of his costume/armor is even the only one in this side of Asia I think.

It's definitely a garrison thing. I was able to join with an Expanded Universe costume, and while some of the individual members (those I like to call purist ****stains) may not like it, the GCO/GML accepted it and they can suck it up.
I'm not one to be cookie-cutter either. I'm not against that, it's just not me. I will have to admit, that I'm doing something quasi cookie-cutter so I don't scare the bejeezus out of the kiddies at the hospitals.
let's face, hospitals wouldn't like me coming around in this:
So i'm going movie-canon and doing an imp ofcr.

As a Garrison Membership Liaison for the 501st, I would like clarify that your first Legion costume does not have to be Star Wars Film-canon and can be EU-canon, given that it's executed properly and is an eligible costume/character(i.e. is included in 501st CRL).
http://www.501st.com/charter.php#ArtIIA
Article II - Membership
A. The 501st Legion is an inclusive, equal-opportunity fan club and will not tolerate discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, sexual orientation, or religion. The only requirements for membership are "ownership" of an accurate, complete, and professional-quality costume celebrating the Imperial (Dark Side) characters from the Star Wars films or its expanded universe sources, that the member is able to wear said costume(s) and that the member must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Membership is granted only after an application is made to the Legion and by a Garrison Membership Liaison (GML) assigned to the prospective member's geographic region. Persons under the age of 18 are not allowed as listed members of the 501st Legion club. The 501st claims no responsibility for minors at events that are hosted or attended by its members.
F. Costumes eligible for membership and their associated code prefixes are covered in the 501st Costume Reference Library (CRL), featured on the 501st main website and available through the Legion Membership Officer (LMO). If an applicant's costume is not listed, they should be directed to inquire the LMO, who can then make a ruling or refer it to the Council for consideration for induction into the club list.

Hi
I'm TX 3758, Captain of the Guard of the 501st Special Operations Detachment I think I need to clarify this point a little, there is no rule in the Legion Charter that stand for "canon costume" as the first costume for join the Legion. In fact I joined and founded my Outpost in Costa Rica with my TX (Stealth or Balckhole trooper) costume.

This may have partially been my doing. Miana had asked about EU costumes in the 501st and I had told her that most people enter The 501st with the more traditional, canon costumes. I know of some newer members that have entered recently as EU characters, but from what I had seen in the past, it was not the norm. Neither Policy nor Charter had been cited as the source for this conversation.
I apologize if this has created any confusion or started any undue debate.

It's "Yes" assuming it fit its original source's look (the Game in this case) to a very large extend.
I know most of the TK/TI/TD/TX etc here entered their Armor with the basic look first and then went "crazy", adding extra parts/designs to theirs.
I know I might too when I had registered my TI tho' only minor changes like a Shoulder Pauldron and carrying BFG.
Ya, the best is to get the Costume done, try registering it and if some changes needed to be done to look more like the original, do it. I read on Cosplay.Com that someone who registered her Sith had to have it modify 2-3 (or more times) to look more like the Original before it finally get approved.

Yep, that's one of our gals. The EU requirements are a lot stricter.
Heavy troopers are listed as TX-troopers. It'd probably be best to contact your garrison and find out exactly what their requirements are for it.
