As far as the photo's with the kid are concerned, I usually will let them hold my lightsaber or cane and get into the act. 90% of the time the kid loves it. For that 10 % where they don't, I calmly whisper in their ear where the parent can hear that it's all make believe... I just try to react as a costumer the same way I do as a parent. It usually works. Confrentations? Usually those can be dealt with by calling security or your own command staff. Just don't react, is the best advice I can give you.

I've gotten looks, and a few questions, when I wore my Jedi costume on campus. I expect it from people my age and older, and I ignore it as long as they don't try to harm anything. Of course, when I got my MR lightsaber, everyone loved it and wanted to hold it. (It helped that a friend and I were known for cheap LotR costumes on significant days in LotR. They were used to our weirdness.)
As for comments from fellow costumers, I'm sad to say I actually got one. And it wasn't even for something that I know is wrong (my very incomplete belt). No, it was for my boots. They're a very dark brown, and look black in some lights, and they don't have straps on them. I was at SWW last year, and was in a bathroom of all places, where a girl my age (not wearing a costume) came up to me and started chatting about Jedi costuming. Eventually, she said that my boots were wrong. All I could do was look at her in disbelief. I have no idea what caused her to say that, or what made her feel that she could say that. I'm just glad that I really don't care what other people think of me. If I did, I wouldn't be costuming in the first place!
As for costume contests, I've never been in one. There was a small 30th Anniversary party at my local library, and I was one of four adult costumers among thirty or so kids. By mutual, unspoken agreement, we didn't participate in the contest since our costumes were a lot better than theirs. We did end up judging the trivia contest, though.

Huh? Does your boots have lots of Blink Blink or something?
Seriously for me, unless someone is doing a specific Jedi Character, all High-Cut Plain Shoes (preferably leather/suede or look like one) and Plain Boots are okay for Jedi or Sith Boots, especially when they get covered by the "skirt" or Robe. I thot I spy one of the Jedi Diplomats featured in the SW Visual Dictonary was wearing an Ankle-Length Boots or something.
Heck I wore Lace-Up Combat boots when in my Jedi/Sith Garb as I have problems getting regular boots taller than my ankle, to fit my Fat Calves and I have to had a pair customed made now (cheaply thankfully but its quality and workmanship is yet to be seen as it's "Cosplay" kind ).

Nope! They're are plain brown leather, and are nearly knee-high. While they aren't the best quality (I got them for $30 at Wal-Mart), they look good and are comfortable, even when walking around a theme park all day, which are the important things in my book.
I'm fairly sure I've seen a couple canon examples of ankle boots as well. Furthermore, there's a Jedi in Sith who has a short robe, probably mid-shin length. (She's walking out of the briefing that Anakin missed.) There's a lot of variation in Jedi outfits, which makes it nice for us costumers who want something a little different. But I think most people expect to see Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan/Anakin/Mace/etc. exact replicas and feel that anything different is wrong.

Some people don't do their costume research properly and choose to harshly correct others.
I know I had a "Ops!" moment a year or so back when I nicely point out to a fellow trooper that the Imperial Officer Shirt suppose to have the Princess Seams going from the Shoulder instead of the Armpit. He nicely pointed out that in ROTJ, there are a very few who have the Seams that way so wanting to be different as usual, he went that way.
Ops!
Ya, my Imperial Officer research had been mostly from what seen in ANH especially the Grey/Olive ones since those are the versions I'm planning to do one of these days (heehee.....too many Black Officers or those planning to be one here).

rodan70 posted: Sadly enough, Has anyone ever run into fellow Costumers that like to start stuff and poke fun at your costumes or someone elses? And not in the Joking kind of way, either. It's probably the saddest thing I've ever seen. Just because you spent Thousands of Dollars on your costume, dosn't make you better than the next person and sure as h3!! dosn't give you the right to pick on some on else. It's truely sad.
Actually that's the only problem I've ever really had with costuming. Most general public think it's cool, the kids love it! Especially as Princess Leia, I tend to get lots of girls wanting their picture with me. But the only problem I've really had was when I was wearing my Padme Fireside costume at a convention. I had a rather rude 'Dark jedi' come up to me and remark that my .... er chest was smaller than Natalie Portmans. I was just absolutely shocked! Thankfully for him, the two guys I was with (one of whom was dressed as Vader) didn't hear him or he would have been in trouble. They were quite angry when I told them about it! But other than that, I've never had many problems!

rodan70 posted: Jauhzmynn, I know what you are talking about! That guy who always has to be ther center of attention. That Really Grinds my Gears! Every knows one! Everytime a camera flashes or a tv crew is there, that person is on tv. Funny stuff! I guess I'm not the only one who sees it. lol. Good times
Yep Rodian70.
It grinds my gears(Peter, family guy), gasketsand everything else. :-D
Or the people at cons who are costumed complaining b/c they photographers want to snap a pic of my gear or wave me into the picture with the 'grippers'. heck I don't want to be seen with those types. I cna care less if people take a picture of me or not. I prefer hanging with a mob of friends in simialr gear and do the group photo op. It's more fun.
Why DO people go to conventions in costume anyway. To showcase their workmanship, make a picture or two taken, business(customers see the work and want one themselves and comission you to make it.) Hang out with friends. and last but not least, to not feel weird for NOT having a costume.(JK, is funny though.<snicker>)

Just threaten them that you'll have Darth Vader come down from his orbiting Star Destroyer
to lay the smackdown on them.
Or, you could tell them that they'll be sent to the spice mines of Kessel, or they could be forced to "never again leave this city", etc.
Just use your imagination.
