Darth Nihilus style Mask....Need help/ideas
|
My prototype... It's a little crooked here and there and I messed up on the right eye... But you get the idea of what I want.
First off, the original mask I bought at at Michaels and started cutting away pieces with an exacto knife. I screwed up on it...and not looking forward to buying another mask and chop that up too. The horns I made a few years ago for another project (which failed miserably!), made of scuply clay from Ben Franklin Crafts (no longer in business locally) and held on using just chewing gum, if you can believe it lol
It's supposed to be a cross of something Zabrak like and Darth Nihilus's mask. (in my character bio, the horns came from Darth Maul after loosing them to grow the adult horns we see in TPM - like baby teeth. I came up with the idea Zabrak give their shed baby horns to their mother or mate, depending on marriage status)
Originally the mask is going to be attached to a black pull-over eyeless mask - which I'm having a heck of a time finding online. I have a nice hooded cloak that I am going to use with it...
And where the horns are located, I was going to create a crown-like ring around the forehead, as well as down the nose - like the Nihilus mask. Probably made of sculpy clay...or if I'm clever enough, foam with clay over it *shrugs*
I was wondering if anyone knows/has any ideas, suggestions, materials, custom costume makers or links to help me get this puppy to full Sithly status? The mask doesn't quite fit my face right (the mask isn't exactly meant to fit every kind of face )... What I want is a solid, fitting mask and something worthy enough to wear to something like ComicCon or the next SW Celebrations. In its current state...I wouldn't wear it if someone paid me $100!
It's a tall order, but I'm sure some of you might be able to help
I got my LED/Crystal Focus custom saber in the works, and now to work on the mask - the two most important pieces!
The possible finished project (just wish I had THAT body lol):
Thanks so much!!

Okay, I'll give this a try. For starters, it's an interesting concept you have going there- I love the drawing you did, exellent work!
As for your difficulties with the mask, a couple of ideas that might help. After you draw your cutting lines on the mask- I'm pretty sure pencil marks will show, place a couple of thicknesses of masking tape right along the lines. Us saber builders do the same thing with our sink tubes- the raised edge of the tape helps keep the dremel tool where we want it.
The other idea is to cut a millimeter or two outside of the actual cutting lines, and then use sandpaper to smooth the cut edges down. And don't try to cut through the entire thickness of plastic in one cut- rather, score along the cutting lines, and follow that score line with the knife several times, going a little deeper each time. That should help give smoother edges.
And of course, after placing your masking tape cutting guides, try the mask on and have a look in the mirror. Sometimes lopsided or crooked features aren't readily apparent when you have the thing in your hand, but a change in perspective brings them out.
As for the pullover eyeless mask, my mom made me something similar for halloween many moons ago. It was essentially a hood made of a couple of layers of fine black tulle netting. It looked like a narrow cape hood, but was worn backwards, so it covered my face and the open side was over the back of my head. I used bobby pins to hold it on. When worn under the hood of my outer black robe, I really did appear faceless in the dark, and even in brighter lighting, my face was so shadowed as to be almost unrecognizable. You could probably do something similar for your costume- perhaps make the lower part which hangs down from the bottom of your mask out of something completely opaque but light enough to breathe through, and the part that covers your eyes out of tulle netting, black cheesecloth, or something similar.
Love the cloak you are wearing, that will look awesome with whatever costume you pair it with.

Thank you for replying Amanita I posted this same message here and at other places looking for ideas and help. So far, I've had 2 replies...and this one is the most useful (at the moment lol)
You a saber builder?? I thought about making mine...but chickened out and am gonna dish out $500 for a supped up custom I designed
The tape thing sounds like a good idea. I'll have to go buy another of those plastic masks from Michaels and see if I can get it right this time...though I completely SUCK at symmetry Not a good thing when I'm an artist as well as a costume maker lol Any idea what sandpaper grit would work best? Probably a rough one then work with a very fine grit for the cleanest edges, yes?
I think I might have found the answer for the cowl on ebay. It's a full lycra/spandex hood/mask/cowl thingy but it should work great since it doesn't have seems on the face..though I'll have to cut out eyes *shrugs* http://cgi.ebay.com/Lycra-Zentai-Hood-Mask-Black-New_W0QQitemZ360024247120QQihZ023QQcategoryZ86207QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
The store might also help a few other costumers looking for pieces, body suits, etc...
Thanks again for the reply! And I'll take your advice into serious consideration
Take Care!

If you don't mind spending the money you can get a custom made Nihilus mask from http://www.xtremedesignfx.com/superheromasks.htm They make some preety cool looking stuff. I think I read that it take them about 2-3 months to make it thou. I haven't order from them but maybe in the future.
If you don't mind me asking where are you going buy your saber from cuz that's a lot, is it going to be custom of Nihlius' or something different?

Thanks for the link Guyver
My saber is going to be a custom made by Do-Clo http://www.doclocustomsabers.com/ (found through FX-Sabers.com) from a personal design I created for my Star Wars Empire Earth fan fiction character, Solara Sarin. It's going to have the WORKS (Plector Labs Crystal Focus V3.0 (@$200, shipped from France), Lux 3 LED, custom blade made by Do-Clo...and a few other goodies)...and run me, now almost $500. But SOOO worth it since its my Birthday present to myself as well as for getting through my 1st year of college.
My saber alone with out the blade or internal electronics would be about $160 with shipping added. The complexity is what controls the price, and since mine is a bit complicated...
I'll take a good look at the site link and thank you again for replying/commenting
Take care!
