well, I am wanting to make a costume either that's the main Leia costume from Ep. 4 or a Padme costume. I simply CAN'T find any patterns for the Leia costume, yet I want something that's fairly simple to make and I can find the accessories easily and somewhat cheapely for both if possible. it'll either be one or the other, but I want to see which I can find more of or whatever first. any help, tips, or sites would be greatly appreciated.

also, i was wondering about the estimates of making a Civil War costume, undergarments included. I think my budget is $100 dollars or less, which I think would be nearly impossible with a CW era costume, but I'm still curious!

Thanks!

I don't know the star wars costumes well enough to know which ones your talking about, but I do know a bit about era costumes.

I'm pretty sure you can't do an accurate southern belle costume for under $100. Though, as a start, I reccomend searching ebay for 'hoop skirt'. I got a really nice one off of there for under $15. If you check the Simplicity, McCalls, and Butterick patterns, there's lots of fun options for revolutionary war era costumes. From what I've seen, they tend to use fairly heavy fabrics for their tops, which usually have boddices underneath or have boning themselves, as well as skirts. You could probably get away with cotton broadcloth for the pantaloons and such though, to keep costs down.

Okay, for a start, have you take a look at websites like Padawan's Guide or Jedi Academy for Leia's Costume? Off my head, I know I had seen a diagram showing how the Leia outfit can be cut along the line of folding the cloth into 2 and draw the pattern on it (there isn't suppose to be a Shoulder Seams for Leia's ANH Outfit); the other closest pattern for it is those for simple Angel outfit.

This thread is also about how others had done theirs:
Leia ANH First Gown...Help me... Obiwan Kenobi....;

For the belt, apart from getting the thick vinyl from your local fabric store or if lucky, slaughter something (an old Leather Sofa or wide belt etc), you can use Aluminium Sheet and buttons for the metal part.

For Padme, do you have any in mind and do you intended it to be used to join The Rebel Legion? If not to the later, you can try doing the outfit to your capability or budget, thus not fully accurate. Like for AOTC Padme White Battlesuit, you can just assemble it from found parts or make it using standard pattern for fitting T-Shirt or Blouse Pattern and Pants Pattern.

Just take a look at any of the Padme Costume Threads listed here or check out Padawan's Guide for tips on how the original is done or others had done theirs.

Civil War, are you doing a ball gown or day dress? I think you could make it with a $100 if you choose your trimings, fabrics and hardwear carefully. I agree that you could get a hoop of ebay but postage could take a lot out of your budget. Irrigation piping from a hardwear store could be used to build a hoop and cable ties for the corset and bodice boning. Hunt through the discount bins at your local fabric store for fabric. Many of my costumes have been made this way and no one can point out which ones!!!!

You can create beautiful dresses if you plan what you want to create. Sit down and do some drawings of what you want to make and after listing what you need, then go on the hunt for products. If you don't already have the patterns that may take away from your budget.

I recently made a CW day dress for under $50, including a $20 6 hoop skirt from ebay. The key is finding fabric deals. I got 15 yards of a homespun cotton for $1/yd at walmart and it made a great day dress. The fabric is also historically accurate based on my research. My biggest expensive was hook and eye tape, buttons, bias tape and crochet ribbon. I have an entry on this dress on my blog. I also have a review of the Simplicity pattern i used on Pattern Review. My bonnet required a bit more money because I had to purchase millinery supplies such as buckram and wire. The $50 also doesn't include a purchased corset from a lingerie store (on sale for about $30).

This site mentions a $10 Scarlett costume: http://www.365halloween.com/blog
They used a table cloth and a hula hoop. Very Creative!

If you want something a little more high end. I just finished my version of Scarlett's Curtain Dress from Gone With the Wind. It was a little more pricey thanks to all of the velvet and velveteen fabrics used. This is the blog entry if you are interested.

I really had fun taking a break from Zam and Padme to do CW dresses for a Southern Belle school I am attending this summer. Best of Luck!

thanks for all those tips. happy I was actually *and this sounds silly* wanting to do a CW dress that didn't have such a wide hoopskirt because the place that I plan to wear it to in October has really small doors *lol!*. I was thinking of sitting down and figuring out what exaactly I needed, and then go compare prices at Wal-mart, hobby lobby, etc... and then figure out just how much i need of whatever. Thanks for the tips, and if I make one or the other, I will post some pics! happy

That's not silly at all! happy I often take into consideration what will fit in my luggage and what I can carry on with me (which usually applies to headgear, hairpieces and jewelry).

There are alternatives to hoopskirts that don't involve steel frames as well - but they can tend to be heavier. I'm thinking of ruffle crinolines that add bulk and 'pouf' to the base/A-line part of the skirt. But keep in mind that hoop skirts with flexible steel hoops are possible to get through doorways - they *do* bend and give a bit. happy They (the modern available hoops at any rate) are also designed to pack compactly, usually twisting over in a figure-8 to reduce their area by half - so if they can do that, heck, a door is easy as pie! grin

cool. happy

okay, I have more questions, and my week\month has been just so darn busy that I haven't had enough time to sit down and make a list.

for a day dress: what kind of fabrics would you recommend? I live in North Texas, and summers are generally horrible, but I don't know if it'll be cool or warm when I plan on wearing the dress.

also, what hair style? are there any pics\websites you know that give tips on how to fix your hair and if you might need extensions and\or a wig?

and I've pretty much decided not to go with a star wars costume, since I think that my parents would be embarrassed by me wearing a Leia or Padme costume to a church event. happy

Petra,

I think your best resource for Civil War dresses may be this site:
http://www.shasta.com/suesgoodco/...dresses.htm

As for summer dress fabrics, I would suggest a light cotton or linen, probably a solid, stripe or floral. They're really comfy and don't get so warm when you're out in the sun all day.

And the site I put gives some instructions for "rats" in your hair. They were very fashionable, but just a tight bun would do well, too.

Also, if you're worried about hoop skirts, don't wear them! You could get away with just a couple of petticoats and still have "poof" in your skirt.

Best of luck! Civil War dresses can be a pain, but they're really worthwhile in the end! happy

thanks. That site is the best one I've seen so far. happy however, i didn't see anything related to hair. worried

can anybody tell me approximately how long it took to make a day dress? and, can you just buy petticoats or do you have to make them? *the less I have to make, the better!* lol.

Keep in mind that it usually costs more for someone else to make it for you happy

I think this Friday I'm going to ask my mom if we can go to a fabric store so I can kind of get a feel for what I need to get and look at patterns if I can find any, and see if I can find some for petticoats. They don't look like they'd be too hard to make.

I just got back from "Southern Belle School" also known as Ladies Weekend at the Athenaeum Rectory in Columbia, TN. Over 30 ladies dressed in civil war fashions attended and it was very educational! I attended lectures on the period fashion, customs, etiquette, hair styles and even side saddle horseback riding. I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in period fashions or just love history! I felt that I more than got my money's worth. Here are my pictures from the weekend, it might give you some costume/hair/fabric ideas.

I love how planned things go awry. It did this week; we went to a fabric store to get some sewing stuff for my class and I was flipping through a pattern catalog, and I found this beautiful medieval-type dress that's very simple, yet elegant, and more inexpensive, so we're going to go with that. If I can find pics of the same thing I'll post it, though I may change the colors up a bit. happy
