Costuming help (saber on a low buget)
|
greetings
I am a noob in the costuming department. I grew up watching star wars and I totaly think that Obi wan is freekin cool as hell. I just recently saw a pic of Obi in clone trooper armour and decided that I am going to make a costume of it. My problem is simply that I want to make it as accurate as posible however I do not have a large or even big budget(ok its small) so ill have to buy the armor with my kicker check and probaly just a few peices. My real problem is the lightsaber. a replica ww1 british rifle grenade is about 50 bucks with out shipping. I found a close but faked atempt on bigyellowbox but it just to me isnt close enough. How would i go about replicating obi's saber from 3 and 4 on a low buget. to give you a good idea of my buget is about 30 to 60 dollars a month. any suggestions are greatly appriciated.
may the force be with you

Try looking at your local Hardwares or Car Accesories Shops apart from keeping on a lookout for parts that can be used to make the sabre from anywhere, even your kitchen or living room.
For a start, get very familiar with what was used to make the sabre in the first place, how they look like individually so that you can see it in another item.

The easiest way to scratch build something is to look at it in terms of shapes. Break it down into it's component shapes and look for things that can be used to construct those shapes. Reference material is crucial. You'd be surprised what you can achieve with a little ingenuity and a little leg work.

The brass parts should be easy. For the ridged piece try stacking a alternating series of washers and using a file to get the grooves. Use an epoxy or some other strong adhesive to bond them first so their not rotating all over the place.

wished i knew what that paticular part was called that i mentioned. but it has a kinda grenade type design to the main body of it. im sure with some modding, it could pass as a decent l;ooking grenade section.

How about the Obi-Wan ROTS Force FX-saber from Master Replicas? Too expensive?
If you are building yourself, then you could check out The Custom Saber Shop for parts, specifically this one.

What about looking for resin stunt sabers online? I just got back from AdventureCon in Knoxville, TN and there was a vendor there who sold resin "stunt" sabers (meaning they're fully resin cast so if they get broken the studio would just replace them). I can try to see if I grabbed a card or something for them.

how much of a budget are you considering? if its cheap, then a hardware saber is your best bet, if you got round 150 to spend, then TCSS has the MHS hilts you can get a variety of parts, assemble and install electrics, and there ya go! a complete with blade modest hilt design, will run round 150 or so.
