My Shaak Ti costume from a few years back + help request

Ok, please don't laugh. This was my first attempt at a Star Wars costume. And of course, I couldn't take the easy way and just be a Jedi. I had to be one of the aliens. I based the look on one of my Shaak Ti action figures, which didn't come with a robe. I didn't have a decent robe pattern back then. You can probably tell from the pics that my lekku were made from white tights, stuffed with fiber-fill and painted stripes. Rather than have makeup all over my hands at a comicon, I made gloves by hand-sewing red tights too. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to take pictures until after the headpiece had started to slip and some of my makeup had smeared. I know there's room for improvement, but I was pretty excited to wear this.

Now for the help request. I'd love to make a new headpiece for this costume, as well as for Twilek characters in the future. Is there a better way to make lekku without spending a fortune? I was thinking about brushing liquid latex over the stuffed nylon pieces, but I don't know how to color the latex, other than to apply makeup, which I'm afraid would be a huge mess. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

For the prosthetics, try these links as well as any for the Twilek characters:

I honestly don't think there is an easy way to do this... its like the whole costuming saying, you have to chose between: quality, affordability and timeliness...
you know what I mean!
I have done Shaak Ti myself, in fact I have done two incarnations... You have done a pretty good job at the headpiece.. at least from afar... I really admire the paint job, you have done well, I have seen others that didn't do that as well as you have.... I'll tell you what the biggest problem with mine was... it kept slipping... it is no wonder that you are having problems with it.. the lekkus on the side and back pull it off your head, that is why I think that one hyperspace picture of them puttiing the headpiece on Orli is very important.. they have put a sort of latex brace across her forehead.... you kind of have that going on your headpiece... and if you are having problems with that, how can my superheavy headpiece stay on? I am still trying to figure out how to add that to my headpiece .. but it does solve the no-eyebrow problem.
Back to your question... I know tons of people are exploring the liquid latex option... search the Twilek threads... I went the semi-expensive route and did a sculpt with rubber latex laid on to it... not brave enough to do the foam latex yet.
Tell you what takes paint really well and I used this for the lekku.. I made them out of upholstery vinyl....it actually has a good texture that matches matches Shaak TI pretty well... But all of this is pretty heavy so its really important to think of how its going to be anchored to your forehead.

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like no matter what you do, the weight of the lekku will be a problem. Maybe I'm better off sticking with nylons for now, because they're probably lighter than some of the other materials. I think I'm going to experiment with brush-on latex, just for the part that goes over my forehead. If I color it with makeup and powder it really well, I might be able to make it work. The latex might keep the headpiece from stretching and falling back as much too. I would still like to learn how to do foam latex and that kind of thing. I saw a girl at the San Diego Comicon dressed as a Twilek, and that's what she said hers were made of, and they were very nice.
