Hey all. I'm gathering supplies for a Big Yellow Box saber, and I have a question. I apologize if there's another thread I could have posted this in, but all the ones I found were from '02 and locked.

So, question: I'm wanting to build the Style IV saber, and I'm wondering if anyone has built it recently and found all the parts? The site hasn't been updated in years, and I'm having trouble find some of them, specifically the shower head. I wouldn't be surprised if it's out of circulation, all things considered, but I thought I'd ask here before I go hunting for it.

Many thanks for any answers. happy

I made a few like that way back... For the shower heard, Lowe's or Home Depot should have what you need.

I always stuck to Style III type sabers, but some parts are similar. The sink pipes and washers are easy. For the washers, definitely get the black spray paint that is specifically made for plastic. It works much better than anything else.

If you can't find the same shower head in the instructions, definitely look for a similar replacement. That might be your only options.

It's a shame that the Big Yellow Box isn't maintained anymore. It's been a wonderful resource. I made four sabers based on those instructions, though I modified each one a bit.

Well, I checked a couple of places, and wasn't able to find it. I imagine it's just been discontinued. I don't really have the time/money/experience to be able to experiment with other heads, but fortunately, PVC pipe is cheap. I'll play with the PVC and use that instead.

And thanks for the recommendation for the plastic-friendly spray paint ardavenport. I thought I'd be cheap and use an old can I found in the garage, but it immediately flaked off. I wasn't very hopeful that it would work well, but I thought it was worth a try. Is there any particular brand that works well but isn't overly expensive?

Thank you both!

There is a website in the UK that sells DIY kits that are a great start, but it's down at the moment due to bandwidth

On spraypaint, Lowes sells something called Plastidip. It comes in both a regular mini-paint can and a spraycan. I bought a spraycan of plastidip and it works really well. I used it on my saber.

As for parts... I have a lot of trouble finding almost any of the parts he lists on that site. I can't find any of the shower heads for any of the sabers. I also have trouble finding some other parts but right off I can't remember what. Some of the smaller pieces, I think. I also could not find a drain plug. Course this was about a year and a half ago, and I wasn't too familiar with hardware stores, so it could have just been me being blind.

micky-nikki: I just used the Krylon Fusion; the can specifically says that it's for plastic and it sticks to the washers well enough, though roughening the washers with a little sandpaper always helps. I don't recall that it was much more expensive than the other spray paint.

I've experimented with PVC pipe for sabers; I always wear a mask when sawing it because of the bits that come off it. I've never been satisfied with painting PVC. A gray enamel primer coat of paint helps before painting PVC silver or gold. But don't ever put on a clear coat of paint over metallic paint; it dulls the metallic paint. But really, I'm tempted to try just silver contact paper on parts of PVC pipe. I couldn't find any silver made-for-plastic paint.

Miba: Isn't the Plastidip the black stuff that you use to put on a thick coat for hand grips? Does it dry flat or gloss? I've never tried it. Does it smell bad or take a long time to dry?

Miba: I had some trouble finding some parts too, though I was able to find similar pieces that are working well. I kind of like it, actually. It makes my saber a little more unique. :P

ardavenport: Yeah, that's the one I found. It says that it's dry enough to handle in about an hour. True?

Honestly, I'm just kind of making it up from here. I'm actually pretty pleased with the way it's looking so far. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I never expected it to be. This is my first project of this kind, and it's definitely a learning experience.

First off, a toast to The Big Yellow Box.
* raises glass *
Without that site, I never would have been able to figure out how to build a single good looking saber.
These days, I always carry a 1 1/4" nylon washer in my pocket just in case I randomly come across something that might work out for a saber, but need to confirm that the size is workable.

ardavenport, I have yet to find a good quality metalic paint that doesn't rub off on my hands. I've heard that aluminum foil tape works good, but you've got to make sure that you don't accidentally trap air bubbles while applying it. Then there's also silver-leaf, applied with a spray-on contact cement. I've never worked with it myself, but I hear the results are very nice. Slightly spendy, though.
