Pictures from costume test seen here:
http://public.fotki.com/lasquad501st/clone-wars-movie--c/
My costume is one step from being approved -- it all depends on my hair. My hair is about 2 inches under my shoulder so it doesn't make the fullest of the braid around the crown of the head but comes close.
I need fake hair and bought about $100 worth but I couldn't get it to work and had about that much destroyed trying to work with it. Does anyone know where I can buy premade hair braids that I could just bobby pin in -- I don't see how I can get this work any other way...
Thanks.

You might want to try doing a search for braided hair extensions. If you can't find any, I'd suggest taking 3 small bunches of hair, tying them off at the end with some matching string or yarn, hot gluing the ends (or you could try melting them with a lighter--if it's synthetic) to fuse them together, then braiding the pieces together, and then gluing/melting them at the other end. You can hide the ends by tucking them into your own hair. You might also want to spray them with a fixative to keep hairs from getting pulled out, or just heavily coat them with hairspray. Good luck!

Where I live, there are plenty of hair stores, especially in the cities. I don't know how picky you are about real vs. synthetic hair, but when I need thicker hair, I just go with the synthetic stuff. Another place you might want to look is if you have reenactment places near you. I live near Gettysburg, PA and a lot of the women go there to buy hair jewelry. They might have a natural braid you like better than making your own synthetic one.
I wore my hair in the Hoth braid for my wedding. What I did was brush my own hair straight back, then make two even braids without parting in the middle. I crossed the braids over each other and pinned them down about 1" behind my ears. Then I took the long braid that I made from synthetic hair and pinned it on top of my natural braids. My hair is long but very thin, so I can never make thick/long enough braids with it. I tucked the ends underneath each other.
This page was also a lot of help. Not all of his instructions are accurate, but they gave me the building blocks to do my own Leia dos. It also looks like he's working on a section devoted to Padme. http://www.freewebs.com/princessbunhead/hair.html
Here are a few pics of mine. I know the hair didn't match perfectly, but my hair color is different depending on what kind of light hits it. So I thought it still looked pretty cool.
