I am planning on making the flame handmaiden gown for my Padme doll out of pale yellow velour that will hopefully dye nicely in orange gradients. But I'm wondering, should I dye the fabric first, or sew the gown together and then dye it finished? Any thoughts?

Well, I know for the actual costume, it is best to sew it together first and then dye it, so the dye on the sleeves matches the dye on the dress. I've made the costume and that's what I had to do in order to get the right affect.
However, I know nothing about making dolls dresses or what would be involved. But that was just my thought.

Ok, this may have already been discussed on this thread or another one, but I don't have time to go hunting for it. But if I am going to sew the flame gown (for a doll) and then dye it, it has to hang upside down so the bottom (really the top) sits in the red/orange dye, correct? My question is, how do I keep the sleeves from falling into the dye, since they are rather long? Safety pins? Suggestions, anyone?

I would actually baste the sleeves gently to the body of the dress -- just big tacking stitches that can easily be removed later. That way, if dye creeps up the sleeve, you won't get any funny safety-pin or clothespin shaped irregularities in the ombre effect.

Yes, Safety pins are fine. That is exactly what I did for my full size handmaiden. Hold the dress normally and then, in a very relaxed fashion (i.e dont stretch or pull the sleeve) just pin them to the sides of the dress. Then turn it over and dip it in the dye.
For my dress, I dyed the entire thing yellow and then dipped it in orange dye. Keep in mind that there's no red dye in the dress, just orange and yellow. And the hood of the dress is a darker shade of orange than the rest, so keep that part in dye longer. But also!, remember to move it about, swirl it and such while it's sitting in the orange dye so you dont get that nasty line. remember, the line is your enemy! LOL
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tips, guys! I think I'll go with the basting method, that sounds like a good idea. The fabric I'm using is yellow already, so I'll just be using orange dye. And I think I'll be using entirely different fabric for the hood and sash, since they don't look like velvet or velour to me. Thanks again for the advice!

Yeah, the undershirt they wear, I THINK is just a polyester/cotton blend, but the sash, I'm pretty sure is Satin or some form of it. It defnitely has a sheen to it. Good luck!

"For my dress, I dyed the entire thing yellow and then dipped it in orange dye. Keep in mind that there's no red dye in the dress, just orange and yellow."
Don't forget your color wheel. Red + Yellow = Orange. If you see the real costumes in person, they're definitely red at the tip of the hood. To get the most accurate results, dye the entire costume yellow using the same methods mentioned above (either let the color creep up or slowly dip it into the yellow, with the bottom of the costume having the least time). Rinse, set and dry. Then use red dye. The creep method doesn't work very well with the red since it's such a strong color. If you do it that way, it will overwhelm the yellow and you'll get red instead of orange. Instead, hold the fabric and slowly dip into the red. It will only take about 30 seconds to do the entire red bath. Let it soak the longest time at the top of the costume, and for the bottom of the orange section, just swish it in the red and pull it out quickly. As Tanya mentioned, swishing will help you avoid the dreaded line. You can also avoid the line by lightly twisting the fabric and dunking that way. Rinse and set, and you'll have the perfect orange color.
Rinsing and setting the color in this costume is a lot more difficult than one that's dyed all one color. If you dump it in a water bath, the dye that you rinse out could set on a part of the costume that you don't want it in. A good way to do this is to get a garden hose and one of those pesticide attachments. Fill the pesticide container with your setting agent (vinegar, soda ash dissolved in water, etc), attach to the hose, and spray your costume down still hanging upside down.

Ummm...Hi! I'm new to this site. I want to make the Black Invasion dress for DragonCon and I need all the help I can get. I can't seem to find any descriptions on how the dress was made or with what materials. Especially with the lacey part...is it an underdress with a split front overdress? Help!

Welcome Mithrilanna.
I'm pretty certain that there is pre-existing discussion of that dress and its construction in the: Amidala's Gowns part 2 thread.
Both surlygirlie & Nostradamus have made spectacular recreations of it and could probably answer some of your queries. Your best bet might be to repost your question about it in the 'Amidala's Gowns' thread.

I've pretty much finished the coat for the episode I battle outfit, I just need to put some snaps on the front to close it and sew the ribbon that runs down the side on the outside of the coats skirt, tomorrow I hope to start the pants.

Your battle outfit is looking great!
I can't wait to see it all complete.
It's a costume I've toyed with making many times over the years, but I always end up leaving it on the "maybe" list.
One of these days...
