I agree with those ideas, Darth Eagle and ObiAnne. I think what Sister Sola said about the "hitch and adjust later" technique will also come into play.
I have been obsessively looking at the pics at Padawan's Guide, FFAQ, and our own screencaps at the RHS site, trying to best see how to put this whole thing together. (And help from some keen observers...thanks to who they are!)
My main obstacle is going to be my own lack of experience and expertise. Since I don't have a deadline for this gown, taking my time is OK. (Of course, I'll have to not start expecting any more children in the meantime...that tends to really foul up my costuming! )
I think I'll try some sketches and maybe mock up a doll-sized gown with some practice fabric to see what I need to do. I'll also need some practice with attaching trim/piping and zippers (I'm horrid at them!), since I'm planning on doing a sipper down the back of the gown.
Y'all sure someone doesn't want to move out my way and work on this one with me???

How does the skirt take to the Runway Walk during the DAG FIDM Exhibition? Maybe those who had seen it during the show can give some comments so we can figure out how to make it more viable for walking.
The replicas were straight down, IIRC. Plus those girls were like 6 foot, so they had to stay down just to cover their feet.
I'm trying to find the video to double check.

Haha! With this conversation now taking place in two places, I'm forgetting where I heard what. :~)
How many pics are out there of the FIDM fashion show for this costume?

Not many that I know of. There's the one that I found and posted over on Rebel Legion, but I don't know if anyone else from our group took a lot. Kathy might have.

GB,
As I recall, The Art of Manipulating Fabric by Colette Wolff has a good picture of this "sunburst pleating" which like the gold handmaiden gown, suddenly flares out sharply.
The gold gown done properly would be a beautiful mundane real world evening gown to boot.

Obi Anne posted: Well the semi-circle modell worked really well, so I did that and cut it up so I now have to pattern pieces. In total the skirt will be 4 pieces, and it looked really well on the muslin.
I was just wandering through here, found this post, found one of my old posts and realised I have a guide that might help people using Obi Anne's half circle method, at least to really quickly draft the skirt pattern:
http://costumes.glittersweet.com/sca/skirttutorial.htm
I just haven't yet added a section on cutting gores in the same direction, which is what you would need to do for this costume.
Eeek, big confusing typo in there, I'll correct it today. The first layout diagram is folded end to end so each selvage folds back on itself, not the opposite side. What the heck I'll also do a pattern layout for cutting all pieces in one direction while I'm at it.

Thanks, Falls the Shadow and Neimhaille for the extra tips! I just started back to work full-time, so this has slowed down a bit.
I'm so sorry, and embarrassed to show my ignorance, but I only vaguely understand selvage and gore...could someone explain a bit more to me? (Sorry... )

Nope, I was made to feel I couldn't take any photos. I don't know if I was being warned more than other people because I'm known for taking pictures or what. So I didn't get any photos at the FIDM fashion show because I was warned not to approach the models or take photos of them. Sorry

So this weekend the Star Wars Exhibit tour opened in Sweden and I was there. They had the gold costume there, and under wonderful conditions. It was well lit and you could get behind the glasscase to take pictures of the backside, the light was also focused on Amidala's red throne gown in the middle so there wasn't any problems with the flash reflecting back. I have uploaded all my pics from the costumes at the exhibit in this album The handmaiden pics start on the end of page 2. I mostly like these photos of the closeup of the hem.
It was also clear that it doesn't have a usual hem, rather it looks like a 1,5 centimeter lighter fabric going around the edge of the skirt. I would guess that that ligther strip is the same fabric, since it's not sewn on, but that it been starched so much that it has changed texture and colour.
The lighter strip can be seen here:
On the bodice of the gown you could also see some very small needle holes in some places. I would guess that they have helped the pleats to stay in place by tacking them down.
Photobucket shrinks the pictures, but if anyone want I could mail you the originals.

Thanks for all the resources, everyone!
I have two more weeks of 11-hour days, then I hope to get actually started on constructing this. Because of the costs of the fabrics, I'm really scared about the actual sewing...I may be back to ask for a lot of help and suggestions!
I wonder how they finished the edges on that bottom hem? I zoomed in on as close as I could, and I can't tell...

You don't see a hem at all, in the way that you can't see that the fabric would be folded and there is no visible stitches. I'm starting to think that they used the finished edge of the fabric that was used in order to avoid the having to hem the dress.

*Squees at the Flame Handmaiden gowns especially, but also at all the others so far* Beautiful! I'm about 70% done with my Flame gown; I'm making it for GenCon Indy. I'll post pictures once it's done.
So far, I have to say that the Flame gown is both really easy and really difficult in different ways. It's difficult because it's so many pieces, and because the sleeves are so complicated (at least they are the way I did it; I still didn't get them exactly right...) and really easy because there's a lot of room for mistakes.
So far, I've used about 9 yards (it doesn't SEEM like that much, but I'm nearly out of the 10 yard roll I bought...) of white crushed velvet (I'm dying it later) for the gown, and I estimate I'll use 3 yards or so of cherry red fabric (I think what I bought was cotton; I wanted satin, but I ran into a few problems) by the time the undershirt, underhood, and sash are done.
I have some beautiful light wine colored satin I intend to use for the underdress/lining og my next costume: The Handmaiden Battle Gown.
I'll post pics as soon as my Flame gown is done; it looks ridiculous all white right now.

Can't wait to see it! And actually, feel free to post any "construction" pics, too. They're always neat to see.
