RE: Handmaiden Costumes
|
I just finished assembling my flame handmaiden gown and am hoping to dye it within the next day or two... Cutting close to GenCon on the 14th, but that's okay. Anyway, I'm going to do dying with four seperate colors to create the gradient effect (wish me luck! ) and hopefully it will look okay.
I totally forgot about shoes to go with it, but I'm probably just going to wear my mom's champagne ballet flats. Not an exact color match, but they'll be okay. I might be able to get my hands on some little gold flats in a hurry.
In total, gown took about 36 hours if I combine time spent on it, and used 10 yards of white crushed velvet, and about 3 yards of cherry red cotton (I wanted satin, but had a color mixup and couldn't afford to order a second time. Probably for the best, as I want to redo the red parts later. ) I am only about 5'2", so expect to use more if you're taller than me.
Main issues were the underhood, and the oversleeves. The underhood on mine is wrong, but I'm not going to bother fixing it; too much time and I'm not sure how to achieve what I want, but I doubt anyone will notice anyway. The oversleeves I think I've done correctly, but I mention them because they're hard! I'll definately spend a lot of time explaining them when I write up my tutorial.
Anyway, I hope to have pictures for everyone once I've finished dying it! I just wanted to post with my triumph.

That's awesome! I can't wait to see what you've done.
I'm redoing mine, as well...though it's certainly on the backburner right now. After seeing the colors used and the lining chosen, as well as more of the construction details, I want my next version to be more accurate.
I have battle maiden questions:
What would most people say the size of the battle handmaiden belt buckle is (TPM)? And the correct belt width?
I've been getting by with my belt cover that is 2" x 3", and the belt I've used is 1.5" wide.

The belt width sounds dead on to me, not sure about the buckle but as long as it looks to scale, you are probably fine

Hm. I have hit an unforseen snag, and that is that it seems the fabric I've used won't take the dye. As far as I knew, crushed velvet was an easily dyable material, but I suppose they've lied to me.
It's quite possible the RIT dye I was using isn't strong enough, though I made it at double strength. Does anyone have suggestions? I won't be able to get a hold of dye and finish the gown before GenCon, but I'd love to finish it at SOME point.
Kinda' not cool that I can't get the handmaiden gown done in time, but ah well, at least I have my Jedi robes for the convention, right?
...
Pics of the white version will probably be up eventually though, in case they're of help with the sewing construction for anyone else. And at least it's over and done with (or on indefinate hold)! Now I get to move onto a new project!

The crushed velvet issue depends on what it's made of, whether it's a synthetic or cotton velvet. Also, when you prewash the fabric, make sure you don't have any fabric softener getting into the fabric. A double rinse is a good idea.
I used the Dharma dyes/fabric paints to get the color on my sythetics; it doesn't affect the pile much, it's washable, you can spray it on, and curing it is as simple as using an iron. If your velvet still shows signs of the "crushed" look, you can dry in on a warmer temp and/or iron it before dyeing.
Hope you are able to get it fixed!
And thanks for the input, princessleia911!

Oh, excellent. I'll get some of Dharma's dyes then; I thought my fabric was cotton velvet, but it probably isn't. I got it on ebay.
Thanks for the tips! Hopefully I'll get it finished and get to use it for another con or event sometime.

Dharma has dye now for Polyester called idyes and their Pigment Dye system works very well also with any synthetic.
You're welcome, GentleBant.

Based on blowing up pics from FFAQ, I think that just slightly less than 2" x 3" is probably right...maybe somewhere around 1 7/8" by 3"...the width of the buckle seems to be about twice as large as the width of the belt.

OK, back to trying to get the throne room gown *started* (I'm still not 100% sure about the velvet I bought for the cloak...). How do you go about attaching the type of trim seen in the detail shots? It seems to be at the bottom of the dress sleeves, around the neckline, and all around the edges/sleeves of the cloak. Do you hand sew it? And would it most likely just be a long braid of trim, or the kind with the extra part on it for sewing it on? Or glue it? And if you stitch it on, do you sew around it, loop-like, or pass the needle right through the center of it?
I'm sorry; I've never done any sort of trim or piping or whatever like this, and I really don't want to mess it up.

Depending on the trim itself, you might have to hand sew it. If it's got beading especially, hand sew it. You could try machine, but hand sewing has more control and precision.

The trims look like they were cording that was couched on, that it something best done by hand.

Thanks for the link, Benae Quee. I was talking about the handmaiden throne room, but I believe the technique would be the same, right?
And I'm sooooo excited! A family friend did this for me, and is working on a blaster for me, too.
Now if I could just get the sleeves and lining to hang right all the time.../sigh

I'm not entirely sure...the color looks nice, but the crumpledness might be an issue...? Definitely not an expert, so that's just an opinion.
Thanks, Sister Sola! I had my blaster done in time to use it with my Snow Bunny costume for Legoland in September, and it's beautiful. It's real, worked metal with a teak handle...he's even joked about mounting a small laser inside for me. :~D
