Yup, The JoAnn's sale goes through Monday (today being a holiday I guess) You still have time
Nostradamus
!
It's odd that the sale is varying from store to store. I was told by a sales person AND she rang me up for my Simplicity and McCalls at 5 for $5.00. I was a bit irritated because I could have sworn the same sale sign was on the Vogue patterns, and they charged me a flat 5 bucks for that one. I asked the cashier and she said Vogue is not part of the same sale (I still think she messed up).

Hmm. It's 7pm. I just got home from work. Vince & Quincy just got supper. I might be able to make it over there before they close after we eat supper.

Whew! I just got back from the "emergency" trip to JoAnn Fabrics. They were still having that sale on patterns, 5 for $5!
There were so many people there, wow and fabric was on sale too, but I didn't have much time to look.
I just bought 17 patterns and spent $17.00! (plus tax)
I bought several ( a dozen) different Renaissance patterns, some for men, some for women, some for kids, American Girl-styled costumes, Wizard of Oz, Titanic, Christmas Carolers and of course the new Star Wars EP II inspired looks.
Some I just bought because I liked a hat or purse or collar or sleeve or ruff or bodice.....WOW. Now I can blend all of the different patterns together and make something interesting.
.....and the purple Senator Amidala costume eventually someday.....
There is no way on earth I will ever run out of things to do, as if I ever had that problem before........

Nostradamus, I'm glad you made it to JoAnn's in time! I think I got about 17 patterns so I can piece together a variety of Padme and Jedi costumes.

RE: Padme Purple Dress
Hooray! I got my burnout flame velvet in the mail today! I won't need it for a while, but I figured I should order it while it was in stock. This is THE stuff. A
HUGE thanks to afaeryschild
for such a great find!
I noticed earlier in the thread there were concerns about getting the two tone look. The silk webbing that the velvet is layed on is quite sheer. This way, it will pick up the color of whatever fabric you use to line the coat.
Maggie just added some great
pictures to the Padawan's guide
and the close up of of the brooch really shows this see-through effect of the silk webbing.
Plus, we can now make our own brooch! I found a book that explains how you can bead a design onto fabric, then stretch it over a plastic template that you cut out. Just make sure there is an extra inch of fabric that you can wrap under the plastic so you can glue it under. Then attach a pin clasp and you are done
Now if only there was a picture of the sleeve beading that was this detailed?

I've added one more photo on the
corset
piece of the dress (more detailed this time). It was taken before I attached it to the rest of the dress. I only got one problem now, I don't now what to use for the decoration on the corset and the skirt...

RE: Padme Purple Dress
Those are excellent pictures of that costume on the Padawan's guide. I got into looking at them last night and then kept remembering CII and now I am a little angry again, because I wasn't allowed to go into that exhibit when I had a few off-duty minutes. That is one of the only things I really wanted to do at CII.
I think I did see a perfect material a month or two ago. But I bet it is gone now.
I also have a lot of the construction figured out now, I think. All of those new patterns are giving me construction ideas.

Madeline, I like the pictures of your corset! I may have missed it earlier in the thread, but I was wondering what pattern you used for it?
It also looks like you were able to find a fabric that already had sequins on it. I hope I can find something like that, I can't imagine how long it would take to sew on all those sequins!
Do any of you think there might be a small bead on top of the hole on all the sequins? (I'm not sure what tequnique to use if I have to do all the sequins by hand)

Kay Dee:
I used the same pattern for this corset as I used for the picnic corset. Here it is:
click
I couldn't link direct to the pattern, so you have to scroll the page down a bit. The corsets model number is
J22938
and then I used
V22942
for the skirt, but I'm not really happy about the skirt. I could have done it without the pattern because I had to modify It so heavily.
I'm glad you guys liked my dress so far

RE: Padme Purple Dress
Thanks Madeline,
It looks like you just had to add the v shaped bottom to the corset yourself. I guess I could do that huh? Now to figure out how in the world I can work on this w/o hubby finding out!!! (told me last night I'm forbidden to sew ever again) Why can't he travel on business to Europe for a few weeks like he used to? EEEK! I have a seroius delima here, as I've already purchased my beautiful velevet

Kay Dee -- have you dyed your velvet yet? I am seriously considering getting some but I'm not sure about the whole dyeing process. Sounds like it would be hard to get all the velvet evenly dyed.. Any thoughts anyone?

Master Kiona
- No, I have not dyed my velvet yet. I want to get swatches of potential dress fabric that I'm going to use so I can make sure my purples compliment eachother well.
I'm also concerned about dying that much yardage of velvet evenly. The dress/coat patterns called for 8.5 yards, and I got 4 extra yards because this costume has MUCH bigger sleeves. I've got about 12.5 yards to dye! I figured I'd have to get a HUGE plastic container (We have a store called Organized Living that sells ones that are as big as a bathtub). I haven't done my calculations yet though to know if this will hold enough water per weight of fabric. I'd hate to have to do two seperate batches, the colors could turn out different
Ferd
, I take it you have done quite a bit of dying. Any advice?

I can suggest a few options for dying such a large amount of fabric. The clear plastic tubs are great for being able to "swish" the fabric around and get it evenly coated. When dying there is always the fear of using seperate batches and getting different shades. If the original concentrated dye is the same lot--and it is carefully measured and mixed the same color can be achieved over and over again. I would suggest using a boiling water dye to achieve a dark shade like this dress. You will use at least double the amount of dye for a dark shade.
You can pre cut your pattern pieces and allow for slight shrinking from the hot dye process, I would also serge the edges to prevent fraying from handling. The pieces will be smaller and rid you of the excess weight and space in your dye tub. Once they are dyed and dried you can re fit them to your original pattern pieces. Some people construct the garment and then dye it--but I would personally not do that. If you attempt to dye a great deal of yardage the dye can make puddles and you can have darker sections. This isn't as common with a dark color because once it is dyed dark--especially with a burn out like this fabric is--the coverage will be easy to control. With a velvet be careful not to "wring it out" and crush the velvet nap. Also hang it so that the dye cannot run down the fabric and cause an ombre type look. I would use a quick dry method (like a clothes line or hand made type of system like that with fans and fresh air to dry it quickly and evenly) Then I would fluff the nap in the dryer on a permenant press setting.
Also make sure you keep the material in the dye bath
at least
30 minutes. If you do the fabric/pieces in "shifts" make sure you accurately time each dye bath session.
I hope that helps you out a little!

RE: Padme Purple Dress
Ferd
thanks for all the great dye suggestions
From the reading I've done I thought I could use a cool water bath for the fiber reactive dyes recommended for rayon (cellulose) and silk. It's OK with me if the silk doesn't take the dye as strongly so I can get the two tone look. I have extra yardage to experiment with, just in case I need to do a warm bath instead.
Gosh, I'd never thought of having to lay the fabric out flat! I don't think I have that much space. My book recommends rinsing the fabric several times until the rinse water is clear. I wonder if that would help eliminate the 'running' effect when it dries?
I also like the idea of cutting out large pattern sections to minimize bulk. I still have a feeling with so much fabric I may have to do two batches. I will have to measure carefully and certainly use the same stock solution.
I probably won't have time to dye my fabric until late December/early January. I've got a lot of projects going on right now. I'm also still waiting for my Spanish Coat pattern - it's on back order!!! I'll let you all know my results once I get it done though.
