Hooray! I'm not the only one working on a Senate Dress now happy Are you making this new dress for yourself or for a client Ferd?

My only deadline is Halloween. I hope I can get my fabric to look blue-violet rather than this darn Fuscha! The Rayon nap turned out purple, but the Fuscha silk backing just isn't working. I hope to go out to Dahrma tomorrow to get one of the navy dyes and ask for more expert advise. I really hope that dying the velvet navy first, then overdying with the Ultra Violet will work.

If only Trisha were around to ask her just what dye recipe was used to make this dress (in my dreams!)

Kay_dee Gosh, I think we could all use Trisha now and again-- Oh well, I think most of us do pretty good just figuring it out on our own (Well, I think LOL! happy )

The Other Senate dress I'm making is the deleted scene dress. The one with the gold moire' and black venice lace. I am on this personal quest to make all of Padme's dresses--so this one will add to that list. I will probably sell it once it's done-I don't think it is one I would wear, but am just dying to tackle it.

I do want to make a "Big Girl's" version of This Senate dress--but I think I will do some other things first. I do plan on making a version of this dress in Barbie size though to take advantage of my Sydney scraps. Now, if I can just figure out how to do the headpiece that small....hmmm...

Ferd happy

Ah - now I see what you mean by the other senate dress. Oh well, I'm sure someone else will get started on this dress in the year ahead.

Right now I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how to make a pattern for the bell sleeves on the blouse. (I just got finished drawing a slightly altered pattern for the bodice) I just have't found a pattern that has the right bell shape to it and I know it will take me forever to make the pattern myself.

Has anyone here come up with a good pattern for the sleeve on the blouse? (not the inner sleeve, the outer sleeve)

Oh Ferd, I would LOVE to see that dress once you're done! That's my "someday when I'm a better sewer I'll make it" dress. I just love it! I think I've got strange taste in dresses...the rainbow dress, then the light blue Tatooine, then the deleted Senate!

Kay_dee, your dress is going to beautiful! I just know it! I noticed your research and was wondering if you had lined the inner dress. I bought a satin polyster, is the weight good by itself or does it need more? Thanks!! (sends positive vibes to kay_dee)

Well now. I'm back from Uni for the holidays so I have lots of time now to be working on this dress happy No excuses for me.

I see lots of information has been done here... You've all done wonderful work happy

Coming back to look at my lovely dress project I've realized that the color of the dress fabric is a bit to red sad But I'm not going to let that bother me, I think it will be beautiful even if the colors don't quite match... unless someone knows of a way to get rid of the red in casa satin...

JadedKnights - I do plan to line the inner dress. I purchased a medium weight satin in light purple for the inside of the bell sleeves. I'm using a very thin, light weight polyester lining material for the inside of the skirt (it's still on order at JoAnn's). The bodice of the blouse/corset actually calls for 3 layers... the satin outer layer, a satin lining, and I still have to decide if I will use cotton or interfacing inbetween the two layers. I think I'm leaning toward cotton for the entire middle layer of the bodice, and interfacing on the V shaped cutout things. I'm also trying to decide if I should use boning or not (one of my patterns calls for it).

Has anyone made the bodice using boning?

JediGirl It can be close to impossible to find the exact shade of purple you need for the dress (I spent several weeks looking) I think the important thing is to get purples that will look good together, even if they aren't quite like the colors in the original costume. I don't even hope to get my velvet to match the real costume at this point. I just want a color that doesn't clash with the rest of the fabric I've already purchased!!! (all muted tones of blue violets)

I didn't make it out to Dahrma today. I really hope the blue dye does the trick though!

kay_dee, if you don't mind me asking, what pattern did you decide for the bodice and the inner skirt? I really like McCall's 3282 for the bodice but I'm in a fix for the skirt though. I have to say I hate pleats (finished a civil war hoopskirt) I got the pattern for the spanish coat and made a muslin. All I can say is whew!! Those sleeves are a trick! But I have to thank those who say to make a mock up first, have my utmost thanks!

That fabric is perfect for the dress kay_dee!
I really hope you going to get the right color the next time you dye it.
After I’ve seen how your picnic dress turned out I can’t wait to see this dress complete! It's going to be beautiful! happy

I've given up the making of this dress. I will never find a fabric I can use for the coat, and the my under dress just looks weird cry
Maybe I finish it someday. Who knows...

JadedKnights I am altering McCall's 3282 for the bodice.
(lengthened the body and brought the neckline up a few inches). I'm also looking at McCalls 2242 for the bodice,
but the arm holes on that pattern are too big (it has too full a sleeve). However, I think I like the technique that's used for that bodice with boning and cotton rather than interfacing. It's also meant to stand alone as a top. (each pattern was only 99 cents so I got both)

I have not cut my skirt yet, but my first try will be McCall's bridal 3449

The front is flat, and there are a few box pleats in the back. I just hope it isn't too full, then I'll have to do some altering to it.

So the Spanish Coat pattern worked well!?!? I got mine in the mail a few weeks ago, but I want to make my dress pattern first so I can make sure the coat pattern fits over the dress. (I don't want the skirt fuller than the coat)

Madeline don't give up! I thought your bodice was turning out so well! Keep looking for velvet fabric. It doesn't have to be the flame pattern. I saw the same purple velevet that Ferd had used on her costume at a discount fabric store... even a plain purple velevet would probably look good. Keep looking, I know you'll find it.

Well, I'm off to Dahrma now. Maybe I'll have some new dye results to share tonight or tomorrow.

New Dye Velvet Dye Results

OK, I'm starting to feel better now. I may have found the dye I'm going to use! Midnight Blue in the Fiber Reactive Porcion Dye from Dharma actually dyes the velvet flame fabric purple! Go figure? Here are my latest results
Midnight Blue Velvet Dye

I may experiment tomorrow with a weaker solution, and perhaps play with mixing this with that reddish colored Ultra Violet.

I actually also purchased Lavender, and did a 1:1 ratio mix with the Midnight Blue. It almost looks the same as Midnight Blue alone... maybe I will see more of a difference in daylight tomorrow.

I only wish I had waited to get my coat lining until after I'd dyed the velvet. The colors don't look that great together sad

Here's a question - is it possible that the coat lining and the inner sleeve are actually a crushed velvet? It almost seems to have that kind of texture, and the Spanish Loose Gown pattern said that velvet was often used on the outside and on the inside lining of the coat.

If I get some better dye results I'll share them tomorrow happy

One More Dye Test

I did a few more dye tests today and came up with a violet that has a little more red in it. I like the color, but I think I'm going to stick with the blue-violet (midnight blue dye) even if it is bluer than the *real* costume. Perhaps some of you will be making the costume with more of a purple satin or taffeta and this alternate dye recipe will be useful.

If you dye the velvet in a solution of midnight blue for 20 minutes, then add half the amount of Ultra Violet to the bath for 10 more minutes (2:1 ratio)... then add the soda ash and continue to soak for 50 minutes you can get a violet that is more of a true purple to red-violet in color.

The difference can't really be detected in a scan though, but I posted the result anyway.

Purple Velvet Dye Results

Now I just have to get my pattern figured out so I can cut my velvet into sections and dye a big huge tub full of fabric! I can't wait! happy
