Naboo Girl
your headdress is amazing! I think you really nailed the back loops too - I had a little trouble with mine and didn't feel like re-doing them. I think you have one of the most accurate headdresses yet - especially because you were able to use the micro braids.
I bet an advantage of doing the braids w/o a wire frame is that it's a bit lighter than mine.
Your bodice looks great too
So have you dyed your velvet yet? Don't worry about cutting it up - you can do it all in one piece. Also, if you can't use your bathtub use your washing machine as your tub. I washed my velvet in the machine, and also used the machine for the rinse cycles and it didn't hurt my fabric. Just leave the lid open and put on some big rubber gloves so you can move your fabric around when it's in the dye bath. It might be OK to let the machine do the work on the delecate cycle - but since the fabric has to stay in the solution for 70 minutes (for Procion anyway) you will have to open the lid and use your hands as well (you don't want it to rinse too soon).
I can't wait to see your finished version 2 bodice and your coat when you get started on it

Thank you everyone for the nice comments!!

, unfortunately my costume probably won't be done for quite awhile due to lack of funding. But I can take pictures of me wearing what I have done so far if you want.
Kay_dee
, no, haven't dyed my velvet yet. I haven't had enough money to even order it. I'm hoping by Christmas I'll be able to buy it. And it's good to hear that I can dyed my velvet in the washing machine without it ruining the pile. It sounds like a very messy task though.

Wow - it's been a while since I visited and posted but I've just been so busy with classwork these past couple of weeks.
I hope everyone is doing well!
Sabine
- your dress looks so great!!!! Congratulations on a job well done! (^_^)
Kay_dee
- I'm sorry to have read about your dying and sewing troubles but I'm happy to hear you still had fun at the Halloween party. It's definitely better to take some time off and then work on it knowing that you're doing your best rather than a rush job and doing it poorly at the last second. (^_^) I'm sure it will turn out fantastic!

Hi
Suzuka!
Don't worry I haven't totally given up on my Senate Dress. I will finish it, but I decided to step back and make a dress for the Lord of the Rings Premiere in December.

Hi, Kay-Dee. Hope your days are less stressful now.
I just had to ask, which dress are you making from LOTR?
The sleeves you made for the bodice, did you alter the sleeve that goes with the same bodice or attempt totally new ones? The one with it has a really strange sleeve cap. Feel free to throw something at me for asking!
Can't wait to see what else you are sewing up!

Hi
Jaded
I guess I'm not all that clear on which sleeve you are talking about
"The one with it has a really strange sleeve cap."
I think there is a discussion earlier in the thread about what I did to make my sleeves. Basically I took the sleeve that came with the bodice pattern... added seams to it on the front and side - and redrafted it to make it a bell shape flairing out from the elbow. I just made sure that the upper half of the sleeve and the cap were the same as the original pattern (with the seams added in).
The inner most sleeve that is more fitted was easier. Just use the sleeve pattern that is given and redraft the sleeve near the wrist to flair out to a bell shape.
I hope that made sense. I'm still working out some final kinks in my bell sleeve pattern - so it does take some trial and error with muslin.
-Kay Dee
P.S. I'm making Arwen's navy blue (some thought it was black until seen in person) 'mourning gown' from The Two Towers movie. My friend and I agree that I need to make an easier costume so I can regain my confidence, have fun, then get back to my challenging Purple Senate dress

I had an exam today on the Scandinavian iron age, and one artefact that was on the exam was this
golden collar
I don't know if it was my brain which was fried or if anyone else can see it, but I definetly thought it was fun to compare it with Padmé's collar.

you are totally right! That
is
the type of choker Padme wears! I'd think this would be an intereseting tidbit for Maggie's Purple Senate dress page at Padawan's guide

That looks like it would definately be an inspiration for that collar!
You're welcome to mention it on my site too if you wanted! Everyone's stuff looks so great! And Kay, I'm sorry you couldn't get the dress done for your party
But you'll have it done early for next years, right?

Has anyone done the pipping on the jacket yet? Did anyone find any that you could use in the store or did they have to make their own?

RE: Padme Purple Dress
I made my own piping using white cotton cording covered with purple silk bias strips I made myself. They match the lining of my bodice sleeves.
I have not yet put the piping on my coat since this project has been put on hold until I finish my LOTR Arwen costume
I have drafted princes seams all along the back and front of my coat for the piping. If this doesn't work I'll have to go to plan B and make the upper part of the coat solid pieces (I have enough extra velvet for it). You can actually put bias tape on a cord with the wrong side out, and then turn it right side out to make it a covered cord (make sure you clip the seam allowance down first though). You can then just hand stitch that covered cording to the outside of the Jacket.

Thanks Kay Dee! They have piping everywhere for almost any color except purple. Looks like I will have to make mine when I come to that point. Right now I am going to be working on embroidery. That will take me a while!

RE: Padme Purple Dress
Well, I thought I would resurrect this thread and post some updates on my costume.
I've finally got all the embroidering done on the bodice and got it put together. I'm quite happy with the way it came out.
-Photos-
I ended up using a lot rivets and left-over cording from the embroidering to lace up the back of the bodice. Now I see why Amidala needed handmaidens to help her get dressed.
Right now I'm working on the mockup for the velvet overcoat and got must of it done, but I got a little stuck on the top part of the huge sleeves. Does anyone have any tips on how they did theirs? I hope to work on them tonight and try to get them to hang right.
I also have another question for anyone who has bought their velvet from silk-conections and has dyed theirs; do you know what the exact width of the fabric turned out to be after it had shrunk from the dyeing?
Thanks in advance!
