LadySonnet - Right now I'm not sure which day I'll wear the Senate costume. It will either be Friday (Star Wars Day) or Saturday. I thought it would be cool to wear it for the RL photo shoot, but I worry about ruining it by wearing it all day and Friday sounds like a busy day.
My husband came back from a trip last night so I'm waiting for him to help my put on the bodice so I can mark and sew the coat hook and eyes in place. Weee - I can't wait to just have this thing finished!!! I just have one problem after another with it, I swear this costume just fights me every step of the way

I've got a hoop skirt problem I have not been able to fix yet. The weight of the back of the coat and sleeves tends to push my hoop skirt forward and up, since there is not an equal amount of fabric in the front of the skirt to hold it down. It's driving me crazy and the only other things I have considered trying are:
a) switching to plastic boning rather than steel hoops so that maybe the hoops will not be so stiff and get pushed forward (just kind of squish a little in the back due to the weight)
b) get some drapery weights and attach them to the front of the hoop skirt in an attempt to counter balance the front.
Any other ideas?

Go with the weights. I had a plastic boned hoop the last time I wore mine and it still pushed the front up. I've already decided that when I go to remake this costume (as I sold the last one), I'm going to make the front of the farthingale a bit shorter and put weights in it to balance out the coat. -=shrug=- I hope it works.

Don't change to plastic boning, this can collapse under the weigh of the gown. One possible solution is a bum roll. Depending on the cut of the waistline of the skirt, it can either be worn between the hoop and the skirt or under the farthingale. This should take some of the weight off of the back of the gown and help to hold it up in the back.

Thanks for the suggestions - I had considered using a bum roll, but the way the dress lays flat in the back around the waist it doesn't seem like one was used on the real costume. Maybe the farthingale pattern I used just sucks? I don't know. I'm so tired of all the headaches this darn costume causes me (no wonder I packed it up for over a year, LOL!)

Kay_dee - maybe you could PM or email Naboo_Girl? She made this costume too - maybe she could give you a suggestion. Wish I could help more! I know your costume will be great - don't stress too much!

Well, I know Naboo Girl wore a hoop skirt under her dress but used a different pattern. I'm also probably being VERY picky and wanting my dress to hang the way Natalie's does, and I'm not happy with the way the velvet in the back tends to push everything forward. I'll see if the weights make a dent. I may resew the waistband and add some darts to the back of the farthingale to try to coax it to swing back more.
This is holding up my Leia ANH costume I want to bring to Comic-Con too! (I have the belt cut and painted, but thought I'd be done with my muslin for that by now. Grrr)

Had a thought. How many hoop rows are there in your farthingale? I have made them with 5 or 6 rows of hoop. With 6 rows, the top row is up by your hips; if you use a small bum roll tied down by the hips, this would push against the hoop helping to keep the skirt from pushing forward.

You could also do what was done in many eras (especially during tied back fashions) is to use ties on the inside of the farthingale to hold it against the back of your legs. Or for a bit more comfort, an arrangement like the bustles of the first bustle era. They do tie, but also use flaps in side the bustle to hold it close to the back of the legs.
I also heard of ties on the inside of crinolines to the wearer's legs to keep it from swinging too far in any direction. Not sure exactly how helpful it would be when walking...
I have this same problem when I stand still in my late 16thC Spanish gown (a style this costume seems to be heavily inspired by)
1560s Gown Even my sleeves are of a similar dimention. When I move the weight of the train actually works to pull the skirt and farthingale back.
I used my real verdugados with willow caning and found I did indeed have more trouble than when I used plastic tubing as the tubing did flatten a bit more in the front. There is also specially made plastic boning for hoops which is very strong. I wore a ridiculous crinoline once and it wasn't going to collapse for anyone;)
Not to mention most texts we can find for farthingale recipies use whale bone, which is basically made fromt he same stuff as hair and nails so is not that rigid either;)
The secret to getting a rigid cone is it use more hoops. I used 7 hoops for mine and would have liked to have gotten more in.
It's the same as corsets, people use heavier weight stuff now beccause we tend not to bone as frequently as the stays we are copying. My effigy corset has more than 100 cable ties in it. Which is even less than the original with about 150 baleen stays in it. Mine are wider so I couldn't fit any more in.

I should mention that I use 1/2inch spring steel for all of my boning (for both hoops and corsets).
There is about one pound worth of steel in my farthingale so that could be why I have never had a problem with the skirts over powering the hoop in my Elizabethans. The spring steel I use is the same stuff that large crates are bound with for shipping. I started with a 100 pound roll of the stuff.

Thanks for the additional ideas! (I've been away on vacation). As a side note, my farthingale uses plastic coated hoop wire (I believe about 1/2" wide) and those do not collapse. It's just the entire cone that pushes forward. It has 5 hoops, so the first hoop is too low for the bum roll to do much good. I'd have to sew in another casing and make a bum roll. Straps on the leg sound interesting and a quicker fix (even if it's a bit of a cheat)! If all else fails I'll do that - phew. Tie the mother down - LOL!
I may still experiment with some plastic boning as well. In my opinion Natalie's skirt seems to squish a little flat in the front if you look at this photo
photo of senate dress
I just don't want it getting as wonky as it did when I made the mistake of trying to make this with something as flimsy as rigilene (a mistake made by not having done enough research before buying supplies).
Well, I've got to unpack and then I'll play with my farthingale. Thanks again for all the help

One last thought. You could make a petticoat (a skirt just a little bigger than the hoop) that has a quilted front. This will give counter weight to the back skirt plus it will help to hide the hoop lines.
The type of hooping you are using, while sturdy, is much lighter than solid spring steel.
