Ah, I see what you are getting at. If the hoops themselves are heavy they will have less of a tendancy to get pushed around by my coat. Rely on the weight of the hoops themselves rather than adding a bunch of drapery weights to the farthigale happy

A quilted petticoat sounds like a good idea too, the hoop wires showing through in spots do bother me. I don't think I have time to construct one before Comic-con, but perhaps if my costume survives the convention I'll make one as an added improvement.

At the moment I have dozens of drapery weights saftey pinned to my farthingale front hem as a test. It hangs much better on my dress form. Now to actually try it on and see if this quick fix holds up!

kay dee, I know I've probably said this before, but I'm seriously in awe of how much time, effort and patience has gone into this dress!! It's truly an AMAZING costume - espcially in terms of accuracy. You seriously have it dead-on. The sleeves look absolutely beautiful, the coat is breathtaking... I'm regretting that I'll miss seeing you at Comic Con. I usually go, but this year, the funds are too tight. I REALLY hope that you're going to Dragon*Con, so that I can see your masterpiece up close and personal!!

Thanks Kreleia! I am going to Dragon Con this year too, so unless some disaster happens at Comic Con and my costume is ruined beyond repair I will be brining it to D*Con. I'd like to enter it in the annual Star Wars costume contest if they have it again this year. I don't expect to win in the female ep II category because there are usually tons of great costumes entered, but I wanted to see what it's like to participate in something on a small scale happy

Yay! I have pictures of kay_dee's completed costume that she wore on Saturday of Comic-Con! And the pictures don't even do it justice-- it's even more gorgeous and amazing in person.

Thanks for posting those!

kay_dee, I think your dress turned out spectacularly. The time you took on the details make it shine and stand out as one of the most accurate and beautiful replicas of this costume I've ever seen done.

Waiting to see you complete this was totally worth it! happy

Thanks for posting the photos Caitlin! I'm so happy I ran into you that morning, the Star Wars Pavillion was so crowded I could hardly move through it each time I dared enter the exhibitors hall to see what I was missing out on. (I can only imagine your firefly ballgown was even more difficult to get around in - although the crowds were not as big on Sunday).

LadySonnet - I'm so sorry I didn't run into you on Saturday sad (Somehow I botched up saving your number in my address book). I was looking forward to seeing your Violet Baudelaire costume!

Thanks again for all the helpful advise and encouragement everyone has given me over the past two years as I worked on and off on this costume. I bit of more than I could chew for a beginner - but it finally came together! I know it's not a perfect recreation, but as a whole I'm happy with how it turned out. The headdress was actually more uncomfortable than I was expecting it to be, but I'm not sure if I want to take time to make another one that fits better and is lighter in weight.

One of the best things about wearing this costume to the convention was the reaction the little kids had to it. Every so often the 4-6 year olds would run up to me and say "hi!" I'd never experienced that in my other Star Wars costumes happy

I think I posted this link at the firefly thread, but this is another photo I took with Caitlin that I liked:

Holy molee, Kay_Dee! That's simply incredible! I bet if you paraded around in front of Trisha and George, they'd call FIDM to make sure the costume is still there!! You've done a wonderful job!

Now I'm motivated to remake this costume... It's so beautiful!

Sweet Lord, this dress was awe-inspiring in person. *Ewok bows* No camera can capture the richness of the velvet coat. I was lucky to bump into Kay on the mezzanine, when I rudely interrupted her pizza-eating! tongue blush It was lovely meeting you, kay! grin
