I actually found this in two colors in NYC the beige that I have, and a fuschia. The beige was $4/yd, the fuschia was at another store for $8/yd.

I emailed a company called PRO Chemical and Dye and they have a dye that would work on poly. In order to dye Poly, you need a special dye called Disperse dye, the water in which you are dying must be boiling in a stainless steel pot. After emailing the rep I got a reponse the next day. He thinks the pile may be an acetate rayon, which would pick up the disperse dye. If it were a viscose pile, it wouldn't work that well. I'll probablty buy Navy and lilac, testing the swatches various ways. Here's their webste (they sell al sorts of dyes and supplies)
http://www.prochemical.com/catalog/disperse.htm
My fiance was laughing, he said my dye notes resembled chem class notes LOL. I had percentages, mL measures, times, colors. I like chemistry, what can I say.

I've been studying your page Kay Dee, as well as NabooGirl's. The information you two have about construction process and tips is amazing and VERY helpful. I've wanted this dress from the moment I saw it in AOTC, now I can finally start it grin

Why not just get the silk velvet from silk connection? It's on sale now for $8.40 a yard. It just seems like that's going to be a lot of fabric to get into a pot of boiling water. Unless you have access to huge trash can sized pots and burners at school I think it might be difficult to heat up that quantity to dye polyester. Doing it pieces at a time you run the risk of variation in dye lots. (Just trying to think ahead for you so you don't have a problem down the line).

So why do I know the fabric is $8.40 a yard? Had an impulse to buy more. I know I'll want to make a 2.0 version some time down the road. The only thing I'm stressing about with all these Padme costumes is I'm starting to get too old to wear them sad Padme doesn't have wrinkles sad What's a Star Wars fan to do?

For me right now, $8.40/yard is a lot. Seeing as this was half the price, I'll see what I can do with it. Luckily 8 yards of this isn't very full and I can do it with an industrial sized pot happy

If the dying doesn't work, the fabric will make a pretty neat coat in the current color. It would also make some great pillows for my living room with a matching throw happy .

Ah, when I read your post I saw the 8.00 price for the fusha and missed that your beige was 4.00. Sorry! (I was thinking the silk was just 40 cents a yard more).

I hope you can get it to work happy

I have a link to Denverfabrics.com they have a large assortment of specialty velvets

Im looking for good pictures of Shaak Ti. Ive been looking all over for them. Only found a few. The comic book pictures really dont help. I have a few that I got from the padawonguide but non of them give the detail of her costume well. Ive only seen paper mache' and one latex one both were too thick around the neck tenticles and or the horn crossed. Im trying to get extreamly close if at all possible. Im on a mission!!. Ive never done latex but I know someone that does so thats not a problem. I just need detailed photographs of her.

Any help would be nice

I've been drooling over the silkconnection.com fabric. It's a nice reduction to the usual cost and it really is so similar to the original one. The only problem for me is that they post the fabric with FedEx to locations outside US. FedEx can double the cost sad Kay_dee do you have any idea what the fabric weighs? By the way, I wouldn't worry about getting older than Padme. Wouldn't she had worn her gowns and dresses when she had matured? I think she would have just grown stronger with wisdom and age.

I ordered another 11 yards a few weeks ago because I want to redo my costume (probably won't happen until 2007 though since I have other projects lined up). The shipping label on the box says 5 lbs. Keep in mind they have to keep in on the roll, so sometimes shipping companies charge extra for long boxes (not sure what Fed Ex does).

By the way, it's the exact same fabric. I'm sure of it! I guess some manufacturers are making something similar in polyester - but according to Trisha Biggar they used natural fibers on all the costumes. The exception is one of the Ep II Tatooine Homestead gowns (I think the embroidered poncho - but I'm really not sure).

Thanks kay_dee! The information really helped. I can get some kind of estimate what the shipping is going to cost. I've been trying to find a similar fabric from back home, but it's nearly impossible. It could be the original fabric? I'm speechless

I finally started drafting a pattern and muslin for this costume happy It's turning out to be a lot easier than I thought it would. I have one quick question though... while trying to drape and draft and draw the pocket sleeves, I can't get it to sit nice, or look right for that matter. What shape did others use (was it from a pattern or did you draftit yourself)? So far I have the back of the overcoat, and top half of the front drafted happy

I just drafted the sleeve myself. I printed up a few photos that Maggie had on her site, put a big piece of muslin over my finished skirt costume (gotta have the hoop skirt, & skirt built to have the right shape) and drew the shape onto the muslin with chalk. It took a few tweaks (first drawing is never 100% right) but that was one of the easiest parts of the coat for me to draft for some reason. The bodice was probably the most time consuming part to draft due to adding in all those panels for the piping.

You know, thinking back to it I might have even pulled some images of the coat into adobe illustrator, blew them up, drew the outline, then printed up the sections and taped all the pieces together and hung it off my dress form! It was a starting point, but needed to be redrawn because it wasn't wide enogh, rouneded enough, etc. I think that's when I just printed up 8x10 pictures, and drew on my muslin to get the final shape.

It was so long ago, I had forgotten about that first step in my graphics program!

I did a similar thing to draft the tabard and embroidery for it too. I blew up photos to 100% scale in Illustrator, printed them out piece by piece, taped them together and traced over with a pencil and tracing paper.

I bought the silkconnection fabric too - I don't have any immediate plans for this costume, but if I end up wanting to do it further down the line, I would totally kick myself if the fabric weren't available anymore!

I bought 10 yds and they sent it on the roll in a huge, long narrow box. I don't know what the weight was, the box is gone..
