Wearing Jedi robe in public....
|
Well, folks...today we had a small cold front come in with heavy winds and dark rainy weather so I took my chance and wore my Jedi Robe in public for the first time.
I had dark brown boots, kakhi`s, Dark maroon mock-turtle neck with a tan leather vest along with a hip belt which has two small leather pouches and my cell phone.
I actually had a lot of people asking me about it and commenting on how neat-looking it was. It was very comfortable too. I only had one negative comment but I saved it. I was at Barnes and Nobles and these two guys were sitting there and as I passed, I heard one say to the other, "Check this guy out, he thinks he`s a Jedi!" The other guy looked and snickered then began whispering something and they laughed again. I ignored them at first but I heard more whispering with Jedi thrown in occassionally so I finially went up to them and said," You guys need to spaek up, I can`t hear everything your saying." Then one said," You think your a Jedi or something?" So I answered," No. I don`t THINK I`m a Jedi...I am one! Unfortunately my powers suck!Unless....( and I leaned in close and waved my hand in front of his face like the ol` Jedi Mind Trick)...unless you think I am a great Jedi!"....and I paused and he stared stupidly before saying no. Then I stood up and said," Damnit...I`m never gonna get good at these stupid powers!!!" And I turned and walked away. They sat there not saying anything and these two beautiful women standing nearby laughed and told me as I walked by," That was sooo cool what you did!" I gave them a little nod, flipped up my hood and left. It was fun! Just a little info about my adventures of wearing the Jedi Robe as an everyday article of clothing. Have a great day everyone!

Awesome! You know as much as some people say they hate SW Fans everyone gets as giddy as a schoolboy when you walk through a room dressed as a Jedi.
Just out of curiosity, how many people asked you to turn on your lightsabre?

In Arizona, if you were to wear a Jedi robe people would think you were crazy for a whole other reason (it is always hot and windy.)

Yup, because you know that Jedi robes were never worn in hot windy climates in the original movies...
The recurring question I've gotten when wearing Jedi garb is "Is that a real lightsabre?"
How do you answer a question that dumb?
"Yes, it is real. I've learned to make light energy double back on itself through the careful alignment of crystals and a plasma gas compressor. I've got a patent pending..."
Usually, though, I say "Yes, it's real. I made it myself."
Or I say, "No, it's Canadian." Funny thing is, that answer seems to make the most sense to people. They just say "Oh, cool" like being Canadian is a perfectly reasonable answer

Those that knew "old Ben" thought he was a crazy old hermit. It was because of his clothing choices in such an inhospitable climate. Luke is no better with black in the desert. What was he thinking? Maybe Midiclorians lower your body temperature.

Malastare,
That is sooo cool. I think it's so much cooler that you responded like you *were* some crazy person who really thought he was a Jedi. Responding rudely back to them woulda brought you down to their level.
Oh and when in costume, I think staying "in character" is the *best* way to impress people.

When I get my costume I am going to go and walk around in the bad area downtown. I'm planning on going through the drug neighborhoods and quoting Obi-Wan, "You should re-think your life."

*Looks around* Did someone say something about Ben being crazy for what he wore in the desert?
*Takes deep breath to prepare for lecture, everyone drops what they are doing and hides...*
Well after living in 140 degree weather for two years I've come to know a couple things about desert clothes. Old Benny's were very loose flowing robes, ideal to circulate air up through the entire garment, cooling him off, plus he lived in an area filled with cliffs that provied plenty of shade... hehe, so he wasn't so crazy, althought yes lighter colored clothing does help keep things even cooler...
Luke on the other hand was insane, not only was his out fit black, but it looked to be like polyester I'm surprised that he didn't faint on the spot (hmmm... maybe that was during tatooine's cooler months However I have had to wear black robes (alot like the burkas in afganistan) in the middle of the summer, they actually weren't that bad, you still had the air circulating around you, but you still did get awful hot...
Back on subject
I once wore my princess leia costume to school, (the ANH one) it was for you fav. movie character day, so every one else was wearing something too. But I had two people proclaim that I was their God, and that I should have worn the slave costume...
But it takes guts to wear any costume in public, and you Malastare definetly have lots of them..

Malastare that is TOO COOL!!! Way to deal with the jerks and B&N!!! HA HAAA!!! They *so* deserved that!
I'm half-tempted to wear my blue Tatooine Episode 2 Padmé dress to church when I get it finished. The thing is, a lot of the people in the congregation are huge SW fans too - not as "freakish" as me, but I've always gotten compliments for my costumes. So, my only worry would be that somebody would recognize the dress. And I play the organ - which is right up in the front of the chapel. heh. Malastare, would you come down to AZ and wear your robes to church with me?

Good for you!
Staying in character makes all the difference!
I try to find any opportunity to wear costumes around in public.
Besides the many weeks of Halloween events and all of the SW-themed events we sometimes drive 100s of miles to attend as often as possible.....
I wore my trooper armor around my neighborhood about a month ago. I needed to wear it to see where the problem areas were so I could fix them. It was a lot more comforable temperature-wise to wear the costume outdoors, plus then I could practice walking up and down stairs in it. I walked down the busy street and cars honked at me. I was with Quincy too, she was leading me because I was not used to the site range in the helmet, plus, no one would try to beat me up if I was with a kid. I walked to the train station and I talked to the mailperson.
People were starting to come out and talk to me, but we had to get back inside, because Quincy was home sick and was getting to feel a bit crummy after a while. But we both had a lot of fun.
I have worn my Jedi costumes around in public quite a bit. I have even made Jedi-styled fancier outfits to wear to special occasions. I made the traditional tunics, tabbard and obi out of more interesting materials. I wore two different Jedi 'formals' to artsy benefit dinners in NYC. (The last one was at the WTC last year) I didn't wear a robe or saber then, but people did notice that I wasn't wearing your regular fancy-dinner-attire.
I may be going out somewhere tomorrow night. The invitation says "creative attire" hmmmmmm. I think a Jedi 'formal' is in order. I think I might just wear a robe and saber too. I have a feeling that there could be an interesting crowd there.

Wonderful story, Malastare! I never know how to deal with people who are that rude. Yours was a delightfully creative response that worked! Shut them up, your were true to your Jedi values AND you won the admiration of those watching.
HocFutue, I really liked your "patent pending" answer to "is that a real lightsaber?" And the Canadian answer is
hilarious. I wonder what it is that makes people accept it?
I'm relatively accustomed to wearing costume in public as I'm in the SCA an often were my medieval clothes in public to, from and after events. But I'm usually in a group and have never had a rude response. Most
people are interested in what we've been doing.
I've never worn my Jedi clothes by myself in public.
I've started doing some costumed appearances with our local chapter of the 501st (we have a subset of Rebels that hang out with them). Did a Wizards of the Coast photo shoot that took place on an ordinary suburban
street.....attracted lots of neighbors. Some of the little girls were a bit gaga over me ("the lady Jedi"). I have to work
on staying in character and interacting with children, especially. They were too shy to come up to me and I was too introverted to approach them….really have to work on that.

Thanks alot guys and gals for the support!
Kreleia- I`m there! Where else can one wear a "humble" robe than at church? You should get some pics of you in your outfit at the organ..I bet its a beautiful sight!
Unfortunately, I had no lightsaber so no one asked. I wasn`t dressed completely as a Jedi. It was just the robe. But when I decided to approach the guys, it was more "on-the-spot" as I was just hoping to make them laugh...laughter seems to equalize us all. Didn`t work but they still got egg on their face so....
I did recieve way more compliments than anything else so I am not deterred in wearing it again and again. My original idea was to use it as everyday clothing. It`s working. VERY COMFORTABLE!!!
Just as a sidenote, I think that robe and tunics are actually better in hot climates. They are cooler and just think of all the other inhabitants of Tantooine....Owen, jawas, Sandpeople...they all had layers of tunics and robes. In reality, look at the middle east...even the Taliban, the orient. They all wear or use to wear robes and tunics...so it`s not really that far fetched, huh? I`ve never been to a SW convention, I bet it`d be fun. Maybe in the future, but in the meantime, wear your stuff and have fun...life is too darn short to NEVER wear a Jedi Robe for real!!!HaHa!
