Sure Mynn...
A "Double Shoulder" (which is what I referred to) is a cut of leather that is about a quarter of a hide. It is cut to include both shoulders of the skin, but has the neck and belly trimmed off. The neck and belly are the least desirable parts, as they tend to be more stretchy, and have more stretch marks and scars. Double shoulders are my preferred cut for small projects. Larger ones would need a whole "Side" which is half of an entire hide.
If you go to Tandy Leather and browse through the "leather" under "tooling leather" you'll see the general shape of a "Double Shoulder" and other cuts...

Look the work everyone's done... Been doing a bit myself.
I was making a Sith, But I think some of these would work for jedi too.
1. We used dollar store shine gaurds for the thigh plate/ lightsaber mount.
2. Old hockey shin gaurds (with backing and padding removed) for the shins.
3. We used faux leather to build a shoulder plate.
All the pieces were then primed and painted a burgandy/crimson color. We used car paint to give thema metalic look. The thigh plate is held on with dollar store straps with velco ends. lol...
Unfortunatly, Our scanner is still down. Hoping to have it back up this week. Maybe then I can figure out how to post a link or pic...lol.
I would love to use real leather for pieces, but that is just not in the buget right now... so ferwell... I'm off to hunt the dollar stores...lol

Shin guards and other pads for Hockey, Soccer, or ever Skateboarding would work fine for a lot of this type of stuff. I've even seen some pieces for horses in Petsmart that make really cool bracers...And I believe that they used some type of sport shin guards for Mara Jade's costume for the Decipher Collectable Card Game when they used Shannon Baksa as the model. Looked fine.
You might check into other contact sports that use pads, like Lacrosse and so on...

Wow I'm glad that someone told me about this thread. I spoke with a new member of our club a couole of weeks ago about making bracers. In my original Jedi costume I actually "binded" my forearms with fabric. Now that I'm redoing the costume (third time's the charm), I think I want leather bracers. Actually what I'm thinking is making a forearm bracer for my right arm and a 2-3 inch almost bracelet on my left, possibly converting it to a semi-custom comlink. He and I have been shooting around ideas, but this is great to see that I'm not the only one thinking about it!
Great job on those bracers. I personally want a smoother design and have been told how to do it. Now just to get the leather, which should be too hard. We have a rather decent leather shop here in town.

Great, Shara. The addition of a comlink to one bracer (or bracelet) is a good idea. Other gadgetry would be interesting, as long as we don't go too "Fett"ish...(I love Boba and Jango's armor, but not everyong should have those...)
Good luck on your projects!

Since I can't get my mits on some leather right now to make bracers for protection in dueling, anyone have any suggestions?

Here are some alternatives for sparring:
Martial arts forearm guards
Soccer shin guards (small sizes)
2 pair of wrist sweatbands (wear 1 pair per arm, one covering the wrist, the other slid up to the forearm...)
Gloves might be a good idea for sparring too...protect the hands.

I realize that their are advantages to wearing bracers, such as containing floppy sleeves. However, would a jedi wear armor? I mean the whole point is to rely on the force to warn them of danger and to rely on the force to anticipate the enemy's attacks. Sight and feelings would fail them and so the use of armor is to say that they distrust the training they have been given.
Just a thought I had. I still intend to make bracers and I think it's more important to look good then to worry about such things. Then again it can make for good discussion.

Well personally I've always liked the look of bracers. I think the way I want to do mine would be functional as well as looking cool. yes, I can not comprehend how Jedi can efficientight with those floppy sleeves, that's part of the reason I want to make at least one on my right arm because I'm right handed. They're just easier to keep in place than the fabric wraps I made before. I've always liked the wrist comlink idea, as well. I know Leia has one in her General outfit. Why wouldn't a Jedi have one either, eh?
Looks like Quag and I are going to be working on this "together" Wanna take a run to Lendwerlen Saturday morning Quag? That way you can help me see what kind of leather you had in mind for me.

Personally I do think Jedi would wear armor. Yes, they tap into the Force to enhance their senses, control damage, leap tall buildings in a single bound...but they aren't perfect. If they were, they probably wouldn't carry lightsabers or even wear shoes. After all, why would a Jedi have to protect his tender feet? Why not walk on a cushion of the Force? My point is, Jedi are not all-powerful, unstoppable, immortal beings who cannot be harmed. There would be times when armor would certainly be appropriate...
I see the Jedi wearing armor during large scale battles more than day-to-day attire. However, armor such as bracers can really spiff up those brown robes...
Back to another earlier discussion...It was mentioned about adding a comlink to a bracer, which was a great idea. Here's another: add a mount for a lightsaber. In the PC video game "Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II" one of the Dark Jedi (Maw) wears his lightsaber on a bracer on his forearm. Interesting look...This could be accomplished with a Covertec clip and another similar clip (so long as the second one does not lock. I'm sure there would be other methods as well...

Sounds like a good idea until I can make a bracer. Thanks kai. I was thiking up the same things, you just confermed it.
I was wodering about the floppy slee ve bit too? DOesn't make logical sense to have such baggy sleeves, one wrong move, and your clothing gets a shave by someone elses' or your saber.
I'm wondering if the clothing is for just more than looks. I thinkhte baggy sleeves are more to distract the opponent, and hidner 'em from getting a bead on you. Kinda' faking 'em out. He hits the wrong palce.

The sleeve issue is indeed a problem in a fight. That's why the Samurai tended to "roll up their sleeves" (actually binding them out of the way) on their kimono and also did the same with their hakama (drawing up and tucking in the pant-legs or even binding them frim the knee to the ankle). Of course, a samurai in armor had their shirtsleeves covered and out of the way by wearing kote (essentially bracers...though most were a full sleeve effect) and habaki (or greaves on the shins).
I have fought in my Jedi garb, and the only real problem was the outer robe...that thing has got to go when the action starts...

Kai,
AHhh a Japaense culture lover 'eh? So whadda' think of Wassabe/<VBG>
I saw the signature at the bottom of the message. WHo quoted that? it's cool.
Yeah I have my outter robe now. I'd have to ditch it when fighting as well, or I'd be tripping on it. (I'd ahte to get laughed at by a Sith, it'd not be a good day ...for him.<VBG> JK.)
My tunic's sleeves move back when i swing the saber. I'm NOT used to something this light weight. This is going to take some getting used to. :/
From your pics kai, it seems you've a backyard to pratice in. Lucky, you. Sodo you get some buddies over to practice or do you do some Katas w/ the saber on your own?

Mynn...
Yes, I am very fond of the Japanese culture. Martial arts, music (taiko), food...but I'll take wassabe in minimal quantities...usually mixed with soy sauce with sushi.
As to my back yard...yeah, it's big. In those pics I'm just in the fenced in area of my backyard...I have 5 acres, mostly woods.
I'm mostly on my own anymore when it comes to swordplay. My wife is very good, but doesn't spar with me anymore lately. I need to get her back into it. Years ago I had a couple of "students" (including my wife) who I trained in sword (and other weapons: mace, axe, flail, dagger, staff, spear, and the use of shields). But those days are passed.
I recently trained Niralle for a film project (which I've mentioned) and she did very well.
