Ok. Maybe that statment is not entirely true, but to a certain degree it does. What advice do you have for wearing different costumes. Do you become a completely different person when you put that trooper armor on? Are you less inhibited when you dress as a twileck? Are you meaner when you wear an imperial office costume? How do you assume that character?

Lately I've been taking belly dancing so I can 1. fit into a twi'leck costume and 2. actually move like a twi'leck. And I've found that it's the only dance I am acutally decent at! My parents were stunned when I showed them my dance, they even suggested I try and do it professionally!

I think every little bit helps for making that persona much more realistic. For example, if you dress like an x-wing pilot, you should be proficient in 'flyboy' language. If you dress like a Jedi, know the code by heart. Make people belive that you are actually from that universe. Trust me you will have more fun and the people around you will be more entertained...

Well I was looking in getting one from Ritchie's armor. I've got a connection with the 501st that is helping me with this... happy

I have ordered the patches for the shoulders and I will look for a belt/harness this weekend (I'm doing the Baron Fel type costume)

I dont ahve the red stripes on my suit yet.

and I'm still researching the best method for the X wing style flak vest (in black of course)

Well, Jedi Girl of Corellia, if we follow the code of conduct for actual Japanese Cosplaying, yes, we must try to behave just like how our character suppose to be. If you are a Jedi, act serious, calm; a Pilot, like a flyboy; a smuggler like Han. But I understand, most people prefer that you don't go too into character. tongue

Personally, for my Jedi, I act as normal; maybe a bit more calm but still myself.

But, when I gonna do Zam, I have to ACT like her, THINK like her, POSE like her, TALK like her etc. It's probably because she is an established character like Boba Fett & Vader so we kinda have to be like that. But of course, when at leisure time or fooling around with friends, I'll not act too much like Zam. grin

Conclusion? If doing an established character, act as much like them as possible; if doing your own characters, inclusives of troopers, pilots etc, act as normal while still maintaining that touch which show that you are protraying that kind of person.

Just my 2 rupiah!

I tried looking 'Jedi-ish' (serious, calm etc. )...and ended up looking waaaaay too serious in the photos. tongue

But I agree with what you said. I was sort of dragging my feet in boots that were a little too big for me, then I remembered that Jedi don't do that. Walking properly and walking like you know where you're going (Jedi wandering aimlessly??) helps to improve on your image, as well as help you to get into the spirit of things. tongue happy

As a Rebel Fleet Trooper, I have 2 basic poses: 1) crouching and shooting at Stormtroopers and 2) walking around with binders on as an Imperial Prisoner.

The hard part with #2 is looking dejected, like a prisoner. I'm usually having so much fun with the whole getup that I have a stupid grin on my face. wink

Beyond that, I am trying to memorize the Articles of rebellion, or whatever they are. And just trying to think like a rebel. And I act as a bodyguard to any Leia or Pame that's around. grin Still looking for a Slave Leia in the local area to guard, though. sad wink grin

Hmmm... maybe at Comic Con.....

There's a reason you separate military and the police.
One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people.
When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people.

I think it's more important to know *when* to be in character and when not to be. For instance, I'm sure the food vendors at C2 got tired of all those Jedi waving their hands in their faces saying, "I don't have to pay for my pizza." happy My husband and I try to be in character for photos (especially with kids, who think you're the real thing) and ourselves when talking with other people in a general manner.

especially with kids

Heehee Karma, you'd just reminded me the joys I felt at the Charity Premiere here when I started shaking hands and talking with the Down Syndrom students there while in my Padme White Battlesuit (I was just one of the paying audience there). The interviews I gave were something; but bring a big smile to those kids, that's something I will remember for a long, long time! wink

Now I know what the 3 Bounty "Angels" gonna do next SW Charity Premiere, regardless wherther we are going get paid to come or we are pay through our noses to come. grin

Yeah, I love being in character. It makes it that much more fun for you and for those around you. I am normally a Jedi but I am working on a Chewie suit and I'm making a few things to help me stay in character. I'm going to have a sound effects chip that will allow me to play roars or Wookie sentences (selecteable via switches on my hands) and I'm going to make a little translator droid (a decorated speaker hooked to a microphone) so that I can communicate and stay in character.

Here is a great article/tutorial on Getting into Character.

"Don Post makes all the helmets and mask replicas you can every imagine."

Not anymore. Don Post is no longer licensed to produce star wars items and the reins have been passed to Rubies, who leave much to be desired in terms of quality. The Don Post X-Wing pilot was way too small anyways. I don't think I saw anyone at SWC2 with one of those.

I have to say that as Lady Maul, I loved giving dirty looks or sneering at people. That was a lot of fun. When I wore my Leia Ceremonial gown, I stood taller, and was more aware of how I looked. For my slave costume, I just kept smiling as I was getting my picture taken all the time happy

I was Ysanne Isard for a Screeing of AoTC, and I acidentally scared a couple kids with my contact. I would be turned one way and they would see my normal eye, then I would look at them and they would jump back pretty startled by my blood red hair. Hehe... that was kinda fun, except for the guy who kept asking me when Yoda was going to show up. I had to explain to him that if he did show up he was in trouble with all the stormtroopers here.

I'm sure the food vendors at C2 got tired of all those Jedi waving their hands in their faces saying, "I don't have to pay for my pizza." But if you're in Jedi character you would be honest and not try to get out of paying for a purchase right? So therefore they were acting like sith right? wink

While in my Stormtrooper armor I'm just me when my helmet is off. When I put it on, I try to stay in character as much as possible.

We communicate as much (if not more) from body language and facial expressions than actual words. It is impossible to show facial expressions through a Stormtrooper helmet, so I try to compensate with exaggerated body language. I try to be very aware of how I look from the outside. I nod my head and wave my arms a lot during conversations. Even if the gestures have nothing to add to what I am saying. Just watch "Troops" and you'll know what I mean. They do an overall terrific job. I will keep my eyes on suspicious characters (Rebels, smugglers and Jedi) and will turn my head to "follow" them as they pass and keep glancing at them if they stay in the area. While walking, people smile at me a lot. They obviously can't see me smile back so I will return that smile with a knod, a "thumbs up" or a salute.

At Celebration, I constantly stopped Jedi and asked for their identification. More often then not they would dig in their robes for the con badge. Some would catch on. Easy scene to recreate and fun for all.

Also, a fellow trooper clued me in on a little secret. No matter how much armor pinches and binds, move and walk like it is comfortable. If it is really that bad, then it is time to trim. Threepio is supposed to move like a robot...not Stormtroopers.

One final note on Troopers. They are the Police/Security/Army of the galaxy. I watch what these people do in movies and real life to get ideas on how to move and stand to stay in character. Of course the OT is a terrific resource as well.

Anthony Daniels said this to a group of us Troopers at AlphaCon last year. "Don't just wear the costume...BE the costume"

Great topic JediGirl.
