Okay, I know this is condescending, but I am on a budget (I'm a college student) but I also want to make the belt so it holds up well and I don't have to remake it. Is it better to go ahead and spend the money for the leather or get fake leather for a cheaper price?

My thinking is, I might have to replace the fake leather and it will end up being the same price but more work. Hmm, I'll probably go ahead and spend the money.

Also, do they come in white and silver or do you have to paint the strips?

Check the bargin and scrap bin of a fabric store. I found 4 yards of white vinyl in there for $1. I used two layers of that to make my first belt and it held up very well. The leather wasn't expensive, but it cost more than $1. You will have to paint it white or silver. That is easy and relatively inexpensive. The metal pieces are not expensive (sheet metal and button blanks).

You could always go with velcro if you happen to have that around to save a few dollars for snaps. We always have industrial strength velcro around as my husband has a stormtrooper costume. I think snaps hold up a lot better, though. happy

Personally, I like the weight of the leather with the metal pieces. I did both the ceremonial and senate at the same time. All the materials cost about $30 total. That doesn't seem too expensive. happy

We had the chance to see an R2 mail box this weekend:

Cute photo with the mailbox lavagrrrl!

Yeah, buying the vegetable tanned leather and using the actual cova color paints from tandy to paint them is far less expensive than buying a hyde that has been pre-dyed white or silver.

I know a lot of people have made their belts out of vinyl too.

I made my first belt out of vinyl, and it worked pretty well. Though the coke can plates that I made didn't :P

My second and third belts (third hasn't been made just yet) are made of white kangaroo leather grin It is a little thin, but the belt I made for my V2 costume has held up very well. Though I will probably see if I can back this next one with some felt to add a bit of strength. You can imagine how excited I was when I rang them up and they told me that not only did they have white leather, but silver leather as well!!

At a local leather place, called Packer Leather. They sell the leather to shoe companies, hence the wonderful array of colours (and my gods do they have an amazing selection of colours!!). Of course, I live in Australia, so it's not exactly local for people not living in Brisbane. But if you can find a leather place that sells to shoe makers, it might help? Otherwise paint is probably your best option.

Oh and it's chrome tanned leather, I believe that's how they get the colour in there. If that helps!

Lucky you! Any pre-colored stuff I've ever come across is pretty expensive. BTW - if you are going to paint something yourself I don't think you can use chrome tanned leather. I'm pretty sure if you are painting it yourself you have to use vegetable tanned so the paint will stick. I just didn't want people to get confused happy

Ooops yeah, sorry! Chrome tanned is the already coloured stuff. Not for painting! Thanks Kay-Dee! grin

I just picked up a perfect pair of white flat heeled boots off of ebay for my Leia costume. The only problem is they're a size 9 and my left foot is a 9 and my right is a 9.5 and I just can't squeeze it in! I hate to see them wasted, since they're great Leia boots. If anyone is interested, I could send pictures.

lavagrrl & Benae, you both look wonderful with the R2 mailboxes!

I recently finished my first attmept at this costume. I haven't experimented with the hair yet. (I suck at hair!) But I did get those boots I ordered off of ebay and I got them to unslouch quite a bit. I think they'll work fine for now. happy

I hope these links to my pictures work. Let me know if they don't. wink

Very nice ObiDawn and we do need to see it on you (even without the hairbuns). And a back view.

At a convention this past weekend, I wore my ANH Leia (without hairbuns, buying the wigs this week) and played DDR in it. (photo of DDR Leia is on my photobucket site, link at the bottom of my posting) For a lightweight dress, that poly is amazingly warm (until you go out into 40 degree temps).

Polyester does not breathe like natural fabrics. That's why I normally don't mind wearing this costume when it is on the chilly side. happy
