Even if there are some side effects to Chantix, doesnt not smoking (and all the heath problems with smoking) out way this?

My boyfriend has been struggling for a couple of years with smoking. Good luck to you all, and thanks for the info on this board, it'll certainly help our efforts to help him! <3

Catz, I suppose that's a question that each person would have to consider individually. Given the choice though, wouldn't you opt for the method that presents you with the least, or potentially NO negative side effects? Although withdrawal sucks to be certain, I don't consider it a "negative" side effect as it is part of the body's natural detoxification process.

I think the numbers for "cold turkey" might be misrepresented, too.
For example:
Both of my grandpas quit smoking cold turkey. 100% success rate.
But they only quit after they were both diagnosed with emphysema and put on oxygen. Dorks.
EDIT: I figured I'd add some data for the control side of the experiment...
Both my mom and dad still smoke, and have tried essentially every method out there to quit, from hypnotism to medication. And I can guarantee you that both with continue to smoke until they, too, are diagnosed with emphysema and put on oxygen. And my mom might even continue to smoke even after she's on oxygen. She was diagnosed with diabetes a couple years ago, and rather than maintain her diet, she'll just do another shot of insulin before she eats a donut and washes it down with a can of Pepsi.

My brother used Chantix and was miserable. Basically he said it made smoking have no affect by blocking nicotine receptors. *shrug* He finally quit using the patch.
And yes, cold turkey looks good on paper. But anyone who has ever been addicted to nicotine can tell you that its awfully intense. I could do it if I were tied up and locked in a box.
The patch (and other nicotine replacement therapy) help not just the smoker but the people who live with the smoker survive the process. Many smokers are both addicted to the nicotine and to the habits that come with smoking. So in essence, you kick multiple addictions when you quit smoking.

i know it isn't smoking, but i have quit my major vise...caffeine. which is huge for me! today was my first full day of no caffeine. so i am hoping that this is a real change for me.

Today is my quit day. I dont feel that bad, actually. When I quit last year, by this time in the day I had crawled into the fetal position.
I have already had a busy day and its not even half over. I think that is helping.

Heh, you're right, I didn't. Yay me! lol. I have actually handled my first day quite well. There were a handful of hairy moments where my eyeballs rolled around a bit, but I just kept myself super busy and reminded myself that giving in to my urge to bite off heads will lead me to the DARK SIDE.

Well other than a touch of irritability here and there that could just as easily be nicotine withdrawals, Scott's not having any adverse reactions to the Chantix and had only one cigarette over the entire 3 day weekend. Indeed I think he didn't have any Friday either. He was going to try to just stop but his irritability proved to be too much. Not able to handle the baby crying because she's tired just isn't gonna fly so when he gets to that point he has one and then none for a long while again.

Can he do the patch? I know that colorado help or stop smoking line helps those trying to quit for free.

I've suggested it in the past, he doesn't seem to want to.. ~shrugs~ we'll see what happens, the chantix seems to be working well for him though.
