I just discovered that Worldcon 66 will be held in Denver in 2008.

This is the convention where the presentation of the Hugo Awards take place.

Now, maybe I'm just out of the loop, but we should definetly get involved! I know at MHC they've got something set up there, so you'll all probably see it there.

Denvention/World-Con is going down the tubes rapidly as it is now either in the basement, or also in some rooms on the same floor as a John Deere convention/show and some accountants' convention at the same time. And the tickets are $150+ for what's going to be a grand flustercluck.

The more time goes on, the worse it looks like it's going to be.

Yeah, we've had Denvention 3 stuff come up a few times over the past year. But I had noooo idea that tickets were $175????

2006 gallery -- Check out the links to some of the Masquerade photos at the bottom.

From Wired: "Draws included exhibits like the Delorean from Back to the Future and a full-scale mock-up of the Enterprise bridge. But, ultimately, the fans of science fiction trek to WorldCon to see each other, talk and share a love for all things geeky, from math and law to superhero physics and unicorns. On Saturday, Robert Charles Wilson took home a Hugo Award for his sci-fi novel, Spin."

Worldcon is also where the Hugo Award is given.

So...yeah...maybe more than a few reasons to go, but...$175? Ouch.

$175? Count me straight out. $30 is a stretch. One would think they'd lower the ticket price so they could sell more. ...or are they so afraid that they'd get overwhelmed by enthusiastic fans?

My favorite author is going to be at this con, but I just couldn't justify the $150-175. sad

I'd like to know who can justify paying that much money for this.

If that price included one night with the celebrity of your choice I'd go, but that is a lot of money...

Er...differing perspective, perhaps. I've been to about 5 Worldcons.

Worldcon memberships are usually $120-150, no matter where it is and who's running it. So this is comparable. This isn't like MileHi Con. Well, it is like MileHi Con, but ultra mega huge. Your favorite SF writer/artist/publisher will probably be there. (movie and TV folk, usually not so much. 2006 was weird because it was in So. Cal.) The price reflects the need for more space, for a big theater/hall for the Hugo presentation (like the SF Pulitzers), for a bigger block of party rooms, etc. etc. etc. It's also two extra days than MileHi.

The earlier you buy a membership the cheaper it is. If you buy before the end of January, you can nominate works for the Hugo. If you have a Worldcon membership, you can VOTE on the Hugos. People have been known to buy supporting, non-attending memberships (something like $40, I think) just to be able to vote on the Hugos. Membership does have its privileges, as they say.

I'm going. I'll be too busy to work on any RMFF stuff, unfortunately.

Has anyone posted the website yet? Here 'tis.

I think i'm going to wait until they announce 1 day memberships. Just can't do $200 for a non-media sci-fi con.

It does seem crazy to have only the third World Con in Denver in 66 years here and not go at least one day.
