Don't. That's how SkyNet got started and you don't want to do that now, do you?

A while back I remember someone (Zoom?) posting instructions about how to be able to save movies off YouTube. Unfortunately I can't remember what thread it was in, and sadly it doesn't seem to have been in this one. Can anyone re-post the instructions/links/ect, or a link to the thread this was in?

Does anybody know anything about Linux?
I'm working off an Ubuntu CD and I'm trying to create a 100MB grub-only partition. I'm having a hell of a time figuring out how to install it from the terminal. I have the partition already created and the grub files copied into /boot/grub/ but when I try to run commands in the terminal they don't seem to work. According to my cheat sheet, I'm supposed to do this:
grub --device-map=/dev/null (this seems to work fine and gets me to "grub>")
- device (hd0) /dev/sda (this gives me an error 15: file not found)
- root (hd0,3) (I never get this far)
- setup (hd0,3)
- quit
Does this stuff make sense to anyone?

cd to /dev and see what devices it shows. Most of the time the drive isn't hd0 or sda0.

Oh, wait -- that's right. sda is the storage media. cd to /dev/sda and see what devices are available.
It's been awhile.

Thanks man. Another quick question. Should it make any difference that the partition is FAT16 and the files were copied to it using OSX? I wanted to format it as ext2 but it wouldn't work using GPart on the Ubuntu CD.

Hm. That part's all Greek to me. I haven't used a Mac since when I used to grind Indians and bears on the Oregon Trail, yo. Since you can move files from a Mac to PC to *nix to a cell phone, I wouldn't think it would matter. But, ya never know.
As long as the O/S can read the file, you should be OK.

I wouldn't think it would be any different than transferring the files with Windows. Last night it looked like Ubuntu could see the partition and the files so I think its fine. I'm just a little worried because a) I don't really know what I'm doing in Linux and b) GPart couldn't seem to reformat any partition on my drive without getting an error. If this works though, I'll be able to access my RAID array from Windows and I won't have to do anything special to move files back and forth between XP and OSX.

/dev/sda is the correct drive, but it's like it's not mounted or I don't have permission or something. The drive boots with rEFIt and has 4 partitions (first is EFI, 2nd is Mac OS Extented-Journaled, 3rd is FAT, 4th is NTFS). Apparently the Grub partition is already mounted at /media/GRUB but if I try something like "device (hd0,3) /media/GRUB" it doesn't work either. I'm going to have to do some more research to figure out what the problem is, as these directories and drive names still don't make much sense to me.

Thanks both of you! I finally got around to checking this out. So far I've been using it for audio, but this weekend I have some videos I'd like to test it on.

Alas, poor laptop, I knew him well.
Perhaps someone can help me bring him back from the dead or recommend a good Lazarus to me.
Linda was using Skype on it yesterday when it crashed...perhaps from a power surge, but we don't know for sure. Now when I try and start it up (in Safe Mode), it stops loading at a certain driver and hangs. When I try "Last known good configuration" and "regularly," I get the blue screen of death.
It's a Gateway and it came with a recovery disk. However, when I go into the recovery mode, I get BSOD and it says something about "IRQL not loading."
If I choose the regular boot option with the recovery disk in, it says "NTLDR" not loading (or something like that) and to hit CTRL-ALT-DEL. None of the boot or recovery options work.
I don't have any OS disks, just the Gateway recovery disks. I also am not brave enough to crack open the computer and take out the hard drive and try to hook it up to another computer.
I'd really like to recover the data that's on there , if possible. Music, docs, programs, etc. I'll format if I must.
Major bummer. Anyone here want to earn some bucks and try to help me fix it? Or have any recommendations on a reliable place to take it to get it fixed? Thanks!

Sounds like a possibly bad sector of the hard drive... which means it's dead.
Options for recovering data from that disk are hooking the hard drive up to another computer (that is working, has a HD and OS, etc...). It should detect that hard drive as a secondary (and therefore not need any of the OS files it can't load) and you should be able to pull everything you need off of it.
Is it still under warranty?
